The Older we get the Better we were .
From: Ross Jahnke
Roger,
What I wrote in jest Dave Edmonson notes in fact, that we are creating more and more new events so we can fly old designs that are no longer competitive in their original classes. It seems when a generation of modelers hits their 50's and 60's they get "nostalgic" for the designs they used to fly, and/or become overwelmed by advances in technology. Still however the desire to fly in competition is strong (fun-flies will not do) so the response it to create a new era specific event.
It is usually the gas fliers that start the ball rolling. SAM was the first to institutionalize generational nostalgia, followed by the Nostalgia (capital N) events which as Dave speculated, includes now glider and rubber events. Like clockwork, the newest generation to hit retirement age, those who cut their teeth in the 60's and 70's are now ready to step back from the cutting edge and revisit their storied pasts. It is the free flight equivalent of a mid-life crisis, only it begins about 20 years after mid-life.
The end result is a laundry list of events, that divides contest goers into smaller and smaller groups, until everyone gets a trophy, or worse, when the CD goes home with half of the trophies unawarded. We need to consolidate not further subdivide the events. If you don't really want competition then call it a what it is - a fun fly - and give everyone who shows up with any model a trophy (for just showing up). If you want to Compete (capital C) with old F1C's, enter A-B gas.
I have not yet had my free flight mid-life crisis. But in about 20 years, when all free flight is flown virtually - in a hybrid combination of Second Life and Peter King's free flight simulations, where we buy parts from a virtual John Clapp in Linden Dollars - I may to want to return to my roots in the 90's, when we flew outdoors, in real weather, and chased through real corn.
