FAI NOS GAS Event

More opinions and ramblings by Dave Edmonson

October 26, 2007

It was with interest that I received a phone call from Ron McBurnett and later saw in SEN that there is a new event scheduled for 2008.

FAI NOS GAS

This is an event that I am extremely interested in. But what is the reasoning behind such an event?

Is it because F1C gas is now a dead event because it has reached such a level of sophistication that it is too expensive to attract any new blood? From what I am told, F1C requires a 2 mile x 2 mile field minimum to have a major competition held. And this to draw a dwindling 20 competitors from around the USA  Muncie is not even considered to be a viable field to hold a major F1C competition at!

Is it because there is a yearning to fly older designs that one could actually build, and to see these designs flying again?

Which events are we going to drop if this is seen as a more interesting event? Can we combine some of the NOS gas events so that we can squeeze a FAI Power Nos Gas Event into the numerous list of events?

Let’s see, we would have if this is added:

  1. ¼ A Nos Gas
  2. ½ A Early Nos Gas
  3. A Nos Gas
  4. FAI Nos Gas (with myriads of variations and rules)
  5. B Nos Gas
  6. C Nos Gas

(I include 7-9 also because they are also NOS events)

  1. 020 Payload
  2. ½ A Payload
  3. 020 Clipper Cargo
(1/2A Clipper Cargo is feeling neglected here and also the Jetex 50 and 100 Payload events)

Will the event only be held in California? Do I need an airline ticket to get to the 2 contests a year?

How much interest is there in Minnesota, just me!

How much interest in other parts of the country??

The “Hustler” was just approved last year as a valid NOS gas design for NFFS events. I worked hard in getting that design approved. That was my second FAI power model and it was very successful for me back then. Sid Jepson almost made the USA power team back in that period with that model. Larry Kruse and Mike Fedor are now flying that design and enjoying it. Brad Banes from New York built a ¼ NOS version of it and won the 2006 NATS with it.

So is this another event variation to add to the list? Can we soon have NOS Wakefield and NOS Towline, and NOS Coupe? Oh that’s right, some of those events do exist somewhere.

I just read in SEN about the New York contest with 20 events and one to three entrants per event. This is quite typical, around the country this past year. Our Minneapolis Model Aero Club scheduled 6 one day contests with 9-10 events at each this past year, with only 6 being flown, and only 4 having more than one contestant.

I will have to get my workshop cleaned up, and start building. This is a new event that I am interested in.

(But there are so many events that I need to start building for, which ones do I begin first? I have not even started building my SAM fleet and that complete full size Sailplane kit is still sitting on the shelf waiting for the Orwick 64 or Super Cyc sitting in my drawer. I purchased that Sailplane kit in 1984 when they were still being sold in the full kit version.)

Hi Kevin
Have a favour to ask, i now wish to sell my kit manufacturing business due to 2 reasons, in 1 weeks time im driving to western Australia to work for the mining industry for several months ( good money) and when i return back home i will start my boat plan business full time.
This means that i can no longer keep selling kits.
Can you please let people know that my business is for sale and that im asking for USD $2,000.
For that they get all my stock, templates, jigs and plans/associated paperwork plus shipping costs to the new owner. I will sign a statement that i will not manufacture glider kits.
This is a good price for some one that likes manufacturing and would be ideal for someone that is semi retired or someone that has the energy to promot and expand the sale outlets.
Best Regards
Len

Goblin Able page 132 Frank Ziac Year Book 59/61

I fancy building this design for Classic/BMFA Rubber but the publication date of 1961 is not specific enough to meet the BMFA rules. (Publications up to Jan61 are eligible)

Does anybody out there know of another publication with this design or similar by Norman Elliott that was published on or before Jan 61.

I will of course reimburse any postal or copying expenses.

Ross

You have waxed lyrical on poor old Icarus which leads us into a further
debate based on the concepts that:

A Free flighters do it in thermals
B Free flighters keep it up longer

Having achieved both, on an occasional basis, one makes it to the Fly off or
FO. The FO could stand for other expressions but none of the ladies would
surely use that? It is my conjecture is that after a long day of keeping it
up the performance in the FO can be limp and the performance flaccid. On
that basis the ladies will simply laugh as one disappears into the sunset
with ones tail between ones legs metaphorically speaking.

The FAA and TSA on Ikarus- words for Woodhouse
Mike,

The naked Icarus issue brings up some questions regarding the TSA's final
report regarding his crash. Clearly the TSA was working with limited
evidence (dead body, wax, and feathers) and Icarus was not carrying a black
box. Daedelus (spelling) had lost sight of his boy long before the
incident, and was of little help. Alchemists and philosophers of the
time has collected little data on conditions at altitudes above tree level.

As we know today, higher altitudes are progressively colder (not hotter
as was believed at the time), and the air above a certain altitude is too
thin to breath. I theorize that Icarus became cold rather than hot and that
the wax gave way not because it melted but because it lost its pliability
andbecame brittle. Whether he was also suffering altitude sickness, can be
debated. The fact that the TSA noted "mellted wax at the crash site" in
itsreport, is probably evidence of the heat of accelleration (due to
gravity) and high temperatures at sea level on the day of the incident.

This 'cold air theory' also supports the coroners findings of "the body
showing evidence of skin damage not unlike that brought on by frost",
and "the unnusual shrinkage of a certain part of the deceased's anatomy".
The lead investigator from the TSA discounted the coroners findings, stating
that "Icarus clearly set out on this foolish endeavor to compensate for
undesireable physical malladies in an unwise attempt impress the
ladies".

Though I believe the TSA drew the wrong conclusion regarding the death
of poor Icarus, there may be some truth to the assertion that Icarus was
bent on impressing the fairer sex. Early reports on his life recount
attempts to "modify chariots to ride low to the earth for with to drive through
the country side when the moon be high crooning loudly" and "to challenge
other youth to contests of speed on such conveyances". He was also twi
I think that free flighters more than any others in the field of aviation
have learned the lessons of Icarus - don't show off with fancy stunts
(just climb, circle, and DT), keep your feet on the ground, and always keep
your clothes on at the field- the latter being the most critical in my
opinion.

"New" Power Event aka Walt Power

Ross Jahnke

Walt,

The "new" power event deserves a more descriptive monicker than "new
power event." Given that the event spans a time period that begins with
the birth of rock and roll and ends with the Carter administration may I
suggest "Flower Power." The name certainly embodies the hear and soul of
this era, when then young modelers of your era, appeared in the NFFS
Digest with long hair, side burns, and big mustaches (and often
shirtless too).

As the generation between you and I hits retirement I assume there will
be a demand for a new event encompassing the 1980's and early 90's
between the bunt and carbon construction. May I suggest "Reaganautics"
as the name for this class.

My generation will not need a new name for our carbon era events, we
will simply add ".com" to the end of each event title.

Is it time for the World Wide Shortage of Balsa (sm) again?

Posted by: "timgoldstein" This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  on Yahho FF mailing group

At Peck Polymers we have true contest balsa available. 3x36" sheets.
We weigh every sheet and mark the density based on the nominal
thickness. You can buy it in 1 lbs grouping. So if you buy 5# Peck
Contest balsa it will calculate out to 5.0 - 5.9#. Availability
varies with supply. Right now we have a great seletion of thicker
sheets down to V E R Y light weights. Thinner sheets already sold
most of the lightest, but still have some very nice FF weight wood
there too.

Visit http://www.peck- polymers. com/store/ Category. asp?
Category=BuildingMa terials%3ABalsa% 2CPeckContest
Or http://tinyurl. com/2kaspk to go direct to this department in our
online store.

Regarding the rumor of a shortage, it does have some basis but mostly
in regard to light balsa. The companies that we as modelers buy balsa
from purchase their raw material from other companies that actually
grow/harvest/ kiln dry the wood. The top supplier at least to the USA
has their own plantations. They also have spent considerable
resources in selecting for lighter density trees as well as
maintaining growing conditions that foster lighter density. Their
primary customer base is definitely not the hobby industry, but the
composites industry where they sell the balsa as end grain core
material. It is used in many applications and with the growth of
advanced composite construction in many industries, the use is also
growing. The upshot is this balsa company was aquired by a large
European composites conglomerate. One of the first things they did
was to notify all the hobby industry customers that they would no
longer be supplying to them. So now all the US balsa companies that
we as modelers buy from are having to use less desirable suppliers
that do not have the fancy plantations and their balsa tends to run
much heavier. Bottom line is contest balsa is now difficult to find.
