Southwest FAI Challenge
========================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Hi Roger,
Here is an abbreviated and belated "e-flier" for the 9th Annual Southwest
FAI Challenge scheduled for Boulder City, Nevada next weekend, October 29 &
30, 2005. I apologize for not spreading the word a little better, but since
this has typically been a meet attending by the same people year after year,
I deferred my attention (unfortunately) to work. Most of the regulars have
checked in, or know me well enough to know that if you don't hear anything,
everything is on-track. Ironically, this has been the easiest of these
affairs to organize for several years...no conflicts & no confusion and the
dates are just as published in the Master AmCup calendar. Thanks to
tremendous help from Harry Steinmetz & Bob Beecroft everything is pretty
much ready to go.
F1A, B & C are scheduled for (7)1-hour rounds starting at 8:00 Saturday.
Slightly extended maxes for first rounds. No Super Max.
F1G, H & J are scheduled for a 1/2 hour Tie-Breaker Champagne Fly-off round
at 7:30 on Sunday. Then (5) 45 minute rounds starting at 8:00. The
Tie-Breaker Flyoffs will have separate first place awards (including
champagne), but will also be used if necessary, to settle the mini-event
results in lieu of a potential marathon max flyoff in the middle of the day
on Sunday. P-30 is offered as a separate event on both days. Separate
awards for each day. Entry fees same as last year.
As we offered last year, anyone who would like to check weather or lakebed
conditions on Friday can call me at (760) 889-3201. We plan to be out on
the field first thing Friday morning. Cingular service is a bit iffy out
there, but a few of you got through last year.
A special note to F1C & F1J flyers: There are AmCup points that go
un-claimed at this meet. Typical entry in F1C is 2 or less, typical entry
in F1J is 3 or less. I always thought this was a great place to fly and was
always curious why the turnout was so light.
I'd like your input as well as open input from potential flyers regarding
when we should schedule this meet next year. With the ominous 9-Days of
October looming just before the traditional date for this meet, should we
skip a weekend, run it the next weekend, or look for an earlier or later
date?
Hope to see all he "regulars" and each year, a few new faces.
Thanks,
Bill Booth
Shuriken question

In the last few months I've seen three Shurikens appear on eBay.
However, these are no ordinary Shurikens: they are the true peacocks of
the model engine world, all resplendent in iridescent purple or electric
blue. What's particularly odd is that they are described as AAC when all
production engines were ABC and are described as "designed by Fred
Baldwin, assembled by Glenn Lee".
If you haven't seen these, I've put a photo on my web site: go to
www.gregorie.org and look under F1J engines in the Free Flight section.
Select the Shuriken page and scroll down for a bit of purple
magnificence.
If anybody can tell be the story behind these auctioned engines I'd love
to hear from you. I'll put the story on the Shuriken page and credit you
- of course!
Thermals,
Martin Gregorie
America's Cup in October
========================
Jim Parker
Only 5 more contests left in this season with some interesting match ups
developing. Too bad that contest in Argentina is not on the AmCup calendar.
If it were, Mike McKeever would have a lock on F1A. Several have a shot at taking the
lead including me. Last year Mike handed me the AmCup by DTing off the
top of a great bunt allowing me to win the LasVegas contest with a
sub-3 minute flyoff flight. Let's see what happens next week.
On the other hand, Mike is a slick old boy by moving the Sierra
Cup to Lost Hills, he robbed me of 25 points that would have put me
in the lead!
If Eddie Vanlandingham holds onto to his current F1B lead to win the
AmCup Iƒdm sure to hear some grubbing about him only beating a total
of 3 other flyers. My reply will be the same song Iƒdve sung for years,
travel to the lesser-attended contest your self. Edƒds win looks
plausible because of the great scatter of wins this year. Second place
Bob Beidron is the most likely challenger.
Randy Archer is sing ing the ƒWho Moved the Sierra Cup BluesƒU as well.
He needs a non-Lost Hills / Elroy win to lock the F1C lead. Rumor has it
he is thinking of attending the Las Vegas contest but then again the
second place Ed Carroll is thinking the same. Mike Roberts could
be the sleeper here.
Currently Paul Crowley and Tom Ioerger are tied in F1G. If there were
no score changes, Paul would win by the 5th contest tiebreaker rule.
Peter Brock and Jack Emery have a chance but would need some large bonus points
or two wins.
Brian Van Nest is looking good in F1H with 105 points. Bob Sifleet
and Mike McKeever are tied for second with 100 points. They would
both need 2 wins with bonus points to take the lead.
Tom Kerr could be whistling the Edie Vanlandinghan tune as well
if his 95 points holds on for the win. Tom has beaten 5 other
flyers for his points. Jean Pailet can take the lead with a
1-bonus point win. Steve Spence would take the lead with a
25-point lead. There was a rumor at the Sierra Cup contest were
the MaxMen F1J Flyoff was conducted that the results would not
count due to the 60 day flyoff rule. Please note the SCAT granted
this one time exception due to the large number of geographically
disperse flyers with approval from all the maxed out flyers. This
was announced several months ago in SEN. Bucky Sevaites won
the MaxMen along with Livotto's and placed second at the Sierra-
yep that's 3 Lost Hills big point wins but only 2 count.
When comes to F1P the name is Secor- the Cody man. In second is his
2006 Jr team mate Anthony Ferrario and his flying buddy is in third,
Sean Andrews. Thanks to Walt Ghio for managing the
Jr F1P development program this cycle. He coordinated the award
of Cyclon engines to Cody and Anthony and Brian Pacelli, the third
Jr Team member.
Aram Schlosberg is promoting F1Q and so we are scoring it
on provisional bases. The only two flyers are Vic Nippert and Dave Acton.
This is the time of year were I ask for comments and suggestions
for AmCup improvements. Jim Bradley is faithfully to communicate
that we have too many AmCup contests. Others think we have too few.
A few years back we locked the max number at 30. We have
recently discussed bumping this to 32. One of the key
considerations for this increase is the East and Central a
nd West balance. Is there an interest in the Central
or East for another AmCup contest? The requirements are the contest
should have some history of good attendance with all
6 FAI FF events flown. The SCAT encourages
the various regions to coordinate the AmCup contests.
We would request that any interested clubs and or
CD s discuss this issue and submit a request for an
additional AmCup sanction. SCAT does not wish to adjudicate
other regional issues
Pierre Brun, now in Oregon, is in discussion with the Sacramento
flyers of the possible move of one of the 2 remaining Weagel
Field AmCup sanctions for a Friday through Monday day, 2 AmCup contest
at Tangent Oregon. We are considering moving the USSFFC
sanction to the Winter Classic (Issacson's) to provide another
consecutive weekend AmCup contests for those traveling to the MaxMen.
Please email me for ideas, comments.
One last item, at the Sierra Cup banquet, I showed a 250 photo show of
the 2005 USA FF Team World Champ Experience. This is available for a 10$
or greater donation to the 2006 Jr FF Team. Email me if interested.

Junior Team Selection
=====================

Baron SCAT,
The comments by the US flyer on the Junior Team Selection make interesting
reading. As you point out in your comment there is no universal team selection
method (junior or senior) as there is no "right" method (see article by
Mike Warren in early UK FFF to see differences in many contries) but I don't
see the advantage in rules that restrict help for the juniors selection meets.
In the subsequent champs the rules don't restrict this help so what is the
benefit at the trails? My experience as team coach for senior teams is that
more help is available to a flyer than at a team selection and that some take
advantage of this (lift picking for example).
As a comparison our junior team selection is done at a common trials with the
seniors. This has the advantage that there are more flyers to fly with rather
than restricting it to the small number of juniors we have. We also get
results were the juniors whip our asses and get selected for both the junior
and senior teams (Daniel Billiam in 2005 and now Mathhew Cuthbert for 2006)
so this is highly motivating also. I'd be interested in reading how other
countries select their junior teams also.

Roger,
I'm forwarding this from Chris Edge as requested.
Let me know when you'll be in the UK with some spare time: we can
organise a pub get together or maybe an aviation-related visit.

Kiwi,
Can you do me a favour please. I've tried to send the following message to
SEN twice and it seems not to have got through. It may be that EoB has been
banned from SEN or Roger's SPAM checker is blocking me but I don't know as
I can't contact him.
Could you possibly forward this to him with a request for him to contact me=
to try and bottom out the problem.
TA,
CHE
PS Don't know how easy this is but you should get to see the Wallace
and Gromit film; it's brilliant !

Subject: Lift Improvements via Surface Vibrations
Lord SCAT of SCAT of that Ilk,
Mike Warren kind of let the cat out of the bag on an international research
programme I'm involved with on lift augmentation using oscillating
surfaces. Whilst a lot of the work is not in the public domain there is a
small group of us who have been allowed to apply the research to models in
order to see if some lateral thinking, of which modellers are renowned, can
be of benefit and this I can discuss.
We are currently developing model trim based on non-symmetric vibration of
wing and tail panels. Research so far suggests that an entire bunt sequence
on an F1A and certainly the whole climb pattern on a F1B can be achieved,
not by gross surface movements, but by changes of vibration spectra. Music
is an ideal way to achieve this and it is interesting that the style of music
best suited to the required flight phase in fact reflects the flight mode
at that time. For example during straight tow a slow rhythmic music such
as Status Quo (a popular British beat combo of the 70's and 80's) is
effective, ballistic climbs work well with Dixi Dregs ("Cruise Control"
whilst during the bunt the random tones of Bjork are extremely effective
in turning the nose of the model down. Minimum sink ratios have been
achieved with lower levels of vibration and here the tones of crooners from
the "Rat Pack" era such as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davies
Jr. have proved most effective.
With some level of experience we found that writing or modifying music
specifically for a flight gave the best results. Accordingly we can now
announce that derivatives of Zappa's "Dwarf Nebula" and Pete King's
"Speed Trap" have achieved flights of 4:56 and 5:34 for F1A and F1B models
respectively. You have to be careful though as we once miss programmed a
Kylie Minogue track into a geared F1C and the wings simply exploded during
the climb.
Obviously further work is planned and here the international flavour of the
group can provide a veritable cornucopia of musical composition. I can reveal
that the Americans are exploring the possible use of Leonard Bernstein
and Aaron Copland (Copland's Rodeo Suite seems particularly promising with
its prairie/flying field associations), the Itialians are looking at Verdi
and Respighi and the French are working with both Michel Petrucciani and Edith
Piaf's work, though there are flutter problems given Piaf's level of vibrato.
A paper is of course planned for NFFS.
We are keen to hear from anyone who has suggestions on suitable pieces of
music for Discus Launched Gliders and F1E in particular. Perhaps SEN can be
used as the conduit for any responses.

Josh,
I do agree that the system has errors in it, but I also agree that it is
difficult to fully accomplish all the goals that us Jr's have set forth for
what we believe our "selection" process will be. I also find an argument
that I would make. Josh I dont know about you, but I really dont want a
stranger or someone unfamiliar with nordics, launching me. I have taken
multiple attempts caused by poor launches due to unfamiliarity with the
mechanics of launching a nordic. Other than that, I sympathize for you but
im sure u still have another run at a team so I just encourage you to
keep your head up and live by these words.
