How level is the flying field ?
===============================
Author : slalomskier

Dear fellow fliers, builders, and observers who all participate in this
beautiful sport. As many of you probably know, every other year, a junior
team is chosen of three people in the events F1A, F1B, and F1P. Part of the
process of choosing these members are when they are scored in event times at
the pre-nats, where parents and mentors are banned from the flight line.
This is designed to ensure that fliers can compete without the support of
older, more mature fliers, and the contest is fair to everyone. This system
is flat out b*** ***t. It is impossible to ensure safe competition if
parents are even in an area with cell phone coverage, mind in eyeshot of
there children! I saw many "discrepancies" of launchers tugging a line, to
indicate a launch, or a few thumbs up by the cars, even an assigned timer
was talking to me about thermals. Older siblings should not be allowed to
run with the flier while he is launching the plane, telling them what to do,
and when to launch, or telling them when the engine on a plane is tuned
right. The rules need to be changed. If you are not a competitor, you should
not be on the field. The AMA needs to not only assign timers, who are
already not at there poles, but to assign impartial launchers. The fact that
the competitor can still choose a launcher is as bad as having a parent
time. The point of having a timer that won't cheat is pointless, if they are
putting there planes in boomer thermals because an older, more mature flier
is pulling on a line. Not only do there need to be AMA assigned launchers,
the timers need to have the same equipment, or at least a minimum of good
binoculars. If timers can't see the plane, it defeats the purpose of the
timer himself. I even heard a timer say, "keep an eye on it, my vision is a
little poor". Retrieval is another issue. Not only did we have motor bikes
killing towlines and planes, which lead to me having to ask for a re-flight
when a motor bike tore through 3 of my 4 towlines on consecutive attempts.
Some people cannot afford expensive motor bikes, nor have parents waiting in
cars, ready to retrieve, and siblings waiting down wind with the backup
bike, and ready to jump in the corn, just to get the plane back for the
competitor. Not only are means of retrieval not uniform among competitors,
it is dangerous, and some idiots were even racing AMA officials at the end
of the nats. This is setting a really bad example for this sport. If a
competitor can tow a plane, they can retrieve 7 flights on foot. If the
rounds need to be extended, do so, to ensure that some people are not in the
corn. I was told that the flight line was being moved, and that the rounds
would not be started until the 3 fliers were out of the corn. I went in for
my stamov model, and found it near the runway. I was standing by the runway
when I heard the distant horn for a round start. I ran for the car, just to
get another rushed flight in. There were two others that also had to rush
like hell to make the flight. This contest is about who can make the best
flights, not who can retrieve the fastest; don't start a round until
everyone is there. This should also be true for fly offs. This is a tryout
for who can build, repair, fix, fly, trim, and choose air for there planes.
I know these changes are far from reality, but something needs to be
addressed about who makes the team, and why they do.

Editorial Comment
=================

Number one comment is thanks for the input. Just as with the open program
we need comments from the active Junior flyers just as we need them from
the active open ones.

Second administrative matter is that I removed part of the e-mail address.
This is because I want to encourage active open discussion through SEN and
I want to discourage abusive private e-mail being sent to the author.
Sometime back another young man wrote his opinions about the finals
and described his personal feelings as sportsman. I was very disappointed
to learn later that he got much critial to the point of abusive e-mail.
The point of view of the active contestant is very important and
they must not be discouraged from exprressing it.

Now let me give my opinion some of the issues ..

Firstly my comment to you about the AMA is the same as to the person who
commented about the ROW pond at the nats - we have me the enemy and it is us.
All the competative events FF, C/L or RC are run by volenteeers
who support that branch of aeromodelling. The AMA provides us a structure
but we the free flight community set the rules and team selection criteria.

I make the comment that I've made before, we expect the Juniors to fly
a pivotal contest at a location that the open flyers will not use
for our regular team selection. That's the minus. The otherside
is that the best location for team selection is with out doubt
Lost Hills. The 'only' problem is that it's not practical to hold a selection
contest there during the summer vacation time when the team selection
commitee have decided that the Junior contest should be held.

East - Middle - West coast parochialism aside for people who have not
flown at Lost Hills - it can be very difficult to pick air -
the environment can be hard, dust, heat, insects etc
but there are very few problems with trees, corn, neighbours, etc
So it's just a straight shootout from the flight line !

Looking at alternatives sites the FF community has looked far and wide for
alternative sites and approaches with out succes, maybe some
of the Juniors have ideas ? on sites, dates or Format ?

There has been over that last 40 + years many methods tried for team
selection in the USA and all other countries. None is perfect. The best
chance of have a fair selection is to have everyone there at one place
where the contest is under some scrutiny. In the past for the Junior program
we did it on a decntralized basis where there was not enough rigor on the way
the contests were conducted. While my info is secondhand
I think this year's contest was better run than the first and judging from
your comments there is still room for improvement. For the open
selection event there is always a particpant survey after the event
clearly we need one here too.

In an open event there should be a jury and opportunity for contestants
to protest hsould an infraction be observed, but remember that when
you protest you have to put your money where your mouth is,
understand the rules and have a clear case. Don't forget that focus
on the event is very important and you must not let these problems
get to you and distract you.

Finally the toughest helper question. Clearly the intent of Junior World Champs
organizer is make the Junior do as much as possible. We need
to replicate that in our selection contest. It's just not
possible to manage what happens off the flight line. While I cannot
comment on the specific incident on moving the flight line, FAI
free flight is not just about getting the flight in in 'ideal' conditions.
That's AMA Free flight. Our event includes a large component
of organization and time management. You have to get those flights
in within the rounds and allow yourself time to pick the air.

You need to look at the rules and figure your game plan. You can't have
a helper on the flight line but retrival help is OK - so do it.
Maybe a friend from school who runs cross country will come with you and help?
In many respects this strategy is the part of the program that children
of active flyers have an advantage, but sometimes even they
out smart themselves, isn't that so Jim ? Get some who has been
on the team in your event to advise you on strategy.

The simplest thing is to always be ready at the beginning of the round.

I don't want you to think that people are ignoring your legitimate
isues, the team selection commitee read SEN and they are all dedicated
people who will notice. But this is a very tough event, that's why
at the World Champs, inspite of getting the best from over
30 countries only a few max out. Sometime we expect too much of ourselves.

Finally from a personal perspective I've often though about how I should,
could or would help the Junior program. I could do a F1B school, but others
do that probably better than I do, there seems to be no shortage
of people actively involved in running the program. I'm
certainly prepared to mentor any F1B flyer and show them how
to be as "lucky" as me :-) and get on the team.

Sierra Cup Results

The 29th Annual Sierra Cup is in the books and the results should be
published below. Well attended contest and good , if at times, challenging
weather.
All events decided in a Sunday morning 10 minute round, although it appears
the 10 minute F1C may have arrived as Artem Babenko won the Sierra Cup with
a 10 minute max that DT'd slightly early from 60-90 feet. Great performance
is apparent in the latest generation folder. Jim Parker did it again in F1A
with a solid second place from Peter Allnut. Finally, a close 4 second win
for Alex Andriukov over Yrjo Waltonen. Better attendance was apparent for the
first Sierra Cup at Lost Hills. Plenty of stories to tell and they can be
told better from the people that made them. Dave Shirley, Jim Haught and I
enjoyed running the contest and I hope to see everyone there next year, after
Juan's FAI Invitational and the Team Selection Finals. Lost Hills will be the
place to be next October. Mike

Website for Luddite T-shirts - Mekina

Roger,

I noticed an inquiry in the SCAT/EN as to the source for Luddite
T-shirts.

Please post the following information for your readers as I still have
plenty of the Luddite T-shirts for sale.

They are $10 each for sizes S,M,L and XL and $12 for XXL plus a modest
fee for postage.

These are nice high quality, 100% cotton T-shirts in hot yellow and hot
green colors. They have a large Luddite logo silk-screened on the front
of them. They are really nice shirts and they have no problem
withstanding many washings.

I have created the following website to sell them:

Stick and Tissue Forever!

thanks, Joe Mekina

Wing Builder

Hi Roger

Tell Tapio that Vasi Beschazny can build F1B wing for him
that are top quality, light and strong. He has built them for me.
Vasi may want a quantity purchase though.
The inertialess fighter is a complete hoax, of course. Old
Albert would be turning ovewr in his grave if that were real.
Have you thought about interfacing a compass module with
your timer? There may be an issue about compass tilt. It can
probably be addressed. F1E needs an infusion of electronics.
Tactical flying on a real slope is a lot more tricky than people
think.

I have thought about an F1E timer with compass, gyro or GPS,
as you know Ken Bauer did that and he came very
close to making the team. maybe that's after F1Q ?
