Southwest FAI Challenge

Hi Roger,
If you could post this on SEN as soon as possible, I would appreciate it.
The Southwest FAI Challenge has been cancelled for this year. Due to the
proximity of the Patterson and Phoenix meets and the Holidays, it will not
be re-scheduled this year.
While the weather forecast for the weekend looks more than satisfactory,
simply put, the dry lake bed is not dry. There has been record rainfall in
the area between the SAM Champs (a couple of weeks ago) and now and that has
left the lakebed much softer and wetter than normal to begin with. A brief,
but heavy downpour on Tuesday in the mountains west of where we fly has left
our flying area at a little less than 0.4 miles by a little less than 0.8
miles. To put that in perspective that means over half the width and about
80% of the length of the usually dry lakebed are under water or mud. In the
area that is dry, there are pockets of standing water. Beyond the "dry"
area it is very soft & muddy at best, but mostly just plain underwater.
Unless it is absolutely dead calm for the duration of the meet, these areas
will certainly come into play.
We had similar concerns last year, but we took a chance and were rewarded
with pretty nice conditions This year the lakebed conditions are far worse
and there is even a slight chance of more showers. To add to the concern,
the Porta-Potty people called me before I called them, to let me know they
did not want to chance driving on the lakebed. They provide services out
there year round & know the terrain very well.
We have tried every way we can think of to justify NOT calling this off, but
out of concern for our safety, our vehicles and our models, it is a pretty
obvious conclusion. In the end there are just too many issues telling us
that this is too big a risk. My thanks to Jim Grove who graciously drove
out to the lakebed to check the conditions and to Jon Zeisloft who provided
local knowledge and advice even though the answer was not what I wanted to
hear.
With our sincere apologies,
Bill Booth

Well, now that the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, I would like to
offer my research efforts concerning inducing vibration to increase
performance. By far the most impressive results were obtained using
Vaughn Williams' "The Lark Ascending". A novel and much needed
breakthrough was found by the brilliant stroke of reversing the
soundtrack in achieving a near perfect DT. The only drawback found is
that the plane seems to home in on trees -- no real problem here on the
vast grass prairie of Colorado, but I'm searching through the musical
archives for some alternative to be used for wooded areas.
I would advise researches to write-off Rimsky's "Flight of the Bumble
Bee" and Wagner's "Ride of the Valkeries". Both initially looked
promising but results were scary. In any case I would imagine they
would quicky provoke a banning by the CIAM.

>From Peter King
DHLG: Lift Improvements via Surface Vibrations.
Ha! the mind bogles.
Re DHLG, without mentioning names (Heaven forbid), it is known by the "In"
crowd in the UK that certain well known experts in the field here are secretly
using extremely loud and wild music recorded live in N Africa by a secret sect
of "Whirling" Dervishes, to achieve their high levels of performance. This
wild form of musical expression had a big influence on John Coltrane's late
music of course and the Dervishes have long been aware of it's extraordinary
benefit in enhancing the performance of their own ancient and only recently
discovered Discuss gliders. The technique has been handed down for thousands o
f
years by the tribe's elders during initiation rights to young male tribesmen
during their rites of passage. There is also a school of thought that claims
the
Australian Aborigines once discovered the secret music in the dim mists of
time and used it to enhance the killing power of their boomerangs. However the
powerful secret effect was lost when they tried to perform the music on the
diggeridoo. The loss of the secret power led to much sadness and in some rare
cases a penchent for drowning the tribe's sorrow at it's fall from grace, in
alchohol. Hence the notoriously malicious and totally untrue accusations of
drunkeness among Aborigines.
For the regular DHLG flyer however, it is better to rely exclusively
on the rare recordings of the music, assuming you can ever find the secret
source, as to get the magic effect by trying to perform it live whilst flying,
requires heavy use of highly dangerous mind bending drugs of the magic mushroo
m
and coca plant type. (I know in the heat of competition the top guys will use
any means, regardless of their safety, but it's Banned by the FIA I believe)!
By the way, does this rule apply to "helpers" as well? If they are allowed
to run under a model and flap their shirts to release thermals, are they also
allowed to get "stoned out of their brains" and play wild music during the
DHLG rounds? We may need a new FAI ruling on it, before things get out of hand
and serious brain damage ensues with an inevitable rise in insurance fees for
modellers!
Re the use of Edith Piaff's music
Far from being a problem, it should be possible to use the Piaff vibrato as
an effective Anti flutter technique, by altering the speed of the recording and
fitting the 'high' nodes in the sound wave to fit into the null's of the
fluttering wing's natural frequency, thereby cancelling out any tendency for th
e
F1C wing to flutter under high power.
By the way I hope PRS and ASCAP are collecting my royalties for the use
of "Speed Trap" !? I'm sure the Zappa estate's expensive lawers are taking
care of their part of the deal.
"Laterally" Yours, in fun

Dear All
I would like to ask you if is possible buy from anybody best quality
TAN II rubber.
I'm interested in F1D indoore flying.
300 grams (may be less) solve our problem for long time.
The size is not important (3x1, 6x1 ect.) because we can cutt the
strips.
However the quality is important.
I focus to ranks March/2002 or May/1999 but if you have still some other
best ranks I would like to buy also.
Please contact me by email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Thanks for your help.

Wondering if anyone has knowledge of Bob Gordon and wife who ran
Superior Props?
They lived in Slidel LA, which was devastated by Katrina.
