Hello Roger,
Being a regular reader/reciever of the SEN I must confess that the level of
information has gone down significantly!! A couple of years ago it was
possible to get hints and tips and even theoretical knowledge from these
pages. These days one only gets to know contest results, necrologs (that´s
OK, of course) and what models from what firm to buy or swap. Roger, you are
not to blame for this situation, it is all the free flight community which
has gone into sleep, deep sleep!!
Why doesn´t anyone talk or ask questions on theoretical or practical issues
anymore?? Take a look on the Yahoo SAL Group or the RCGROUP where there are
plenty of activities about the relatively new RC chuckglider class, F3K.
Even free flighters take part here. And the F3K class is in my oppinion the
only RC worth flying and it is very close to free flight except for the RC.
I will try waking up people a little:
Why has all development in the propeller area stopped?
What are the names of Russian/Ukranian propeller developers equivalent to
Prandtl, Durand, Theordorsen and Larrabee??
Some people have used turbulators on the prop blades, why not any longer?
I think VP propellers are effective as a trimming assett, but are they more
effective?
What is the best rubber lube? John Barker in the UK Free Flight Forum 1997
tried to find out, but did not try the silicone oil from Woodhouse. I tried
this stuff but got everything polluted in silicone including the steering
wheel of my car. And how do you get this silicone stuff off everything else
except for the rubber?? Binding the knots was a problem too!
Seemingly all kinds of rubber tests have stopped or are they not any longer
public available??
Would geared rubber motors in F1B be a good idea, seemingly it would in the
smaller P-30 class.
When will we see the first discus launched Wakefield model (Thrown into the
air holding its wing tip and with 3-4 seconds DPR)?? It could reach 25-30
meters this way!
Let us see if this "alarm clock" will do any harm.

[Jorgen
I can report that a number of people are working on F1B dicsuss launch
and have bought Blackmagic timer to help them with this - they
all consider thier projects to be 'secret'. On these lines
I was suprised to see a well known and highly respected member
of the British F1b community get RC HLG instruction from none
other that the errand Biggles. I can assure you that the
F1B'er was not handling the TX , just perfecting the launch ...
On a more serious note I think people are reluctant to publicly
dicuss such ideas because they fear loosing a competative advantage
and because they fear that the conservation section of the
FF community will get the innovation stopped.
It is possible that I have inadvertanly stiffle some interaction
by not being able to bring SEN out quite as often as in the past -
howver if we get what Jorgen is looking for we will make a
special effort !]
Watching Google
===============
We just an e-mail from Brokenspar asking how to find a serious
stop watch - which he immediately cancelled because he did
a Google search and found what he needed.
In a recent newspaper article I read that a research source used by many
advertizers to evaluate Brand effectiveness and penetration
place Google the #1 in the world, surpassing such classics
as Coke and McDonalds.
And it has now become a verb - so Brokenspar googled got his watch.

For those who might wonder what else happens at Eloy, here's the Phoenix
Model Airplane Club free flight contest schedule for 2004. Anyone is welcome to
fly at these small contests, and for America's Cup or National Cup points. We
don't seem to have enough RC OT flyers locally so those events aren't listed,
but you will often find Jim Kutkuhn, Bob Angus, George Tallent, John Patton or
myself flying RC OT on the same dates.
In the summer months, we test fly at what we call the Dawn Patrol: 5am to
maybe 10am at the latest. The Dawn Patrol schedule will be posted in a few mont
hs.
http://www.aalmps.com/pmac04.htm
That page doesn't seem to want to print all the way across on my browser, so
I'll try to cut some of the early contest columns in a few months.
Contact me with any questions you may have about these events - I'll try to
get them resolved with the event CDs.

Am Cup rule change
===================
Author : james.a.parker
I've gotten only one person's feedback on the 2004 AmCup rule change
that now defines entrant as those that make 4 official flights in F1ABC
and 3 official flights in F1GHJ. The one person was Martyn Cowley who
pointed out that a sportsman could drop out of the competition if they
had not done well in the first 3 rounds (F1ABC example) to reduce the
bonus points to the eventual winner. We then exchanged several emails
about the intended and unintended purposes and how they fit within the
context of the AmCup mission to "foster the development of flyers and
models across North America ---. This coast-to-coast competition
encourages flyers to attend multiple contests each year in the United
States and Canada in order to win."
> This exchange yielded no better solution. It is slippery rat hole
trying to legislate human behavior. At this point the rule stands. The
first 2004 Am Cup contest, SWR in Eloy AZ, was impacted. In F1J, 6
flyers flew and by the 2003 rules 1 bonus point would be awarded. By the
2004 rules, because one of the flyers only flew 2 flights, only 5 count
as entrants and so no bonus were awarded. A bigger impact in F1G, 20
flew which would have been a full 5 bonus points. However, 6 flew 2 or
less flights so only 14 entrants and 3 bonus points.
> Important that everyone understands the rule change.
> Contest Directors: "dnf" for "did not fly" should be used rather than
"0" (zero's) in contest results. Is there such thing as a zero time
flight? Do two attempts constitute a zero time and therefore count as an
offical flight? A previous year AmCup issue resolved that yes, 2 engine
over-runs in the same round was scored as a zero. The SCAT discussed
this and agreed, mainly because the model had be flown in a sportsman
like manner.
That is the bottomline: Fly in a sportsman like manner.

Repairing Carbon D Boxes....
=============================

I am interested in the various techniques that people use to repair a
damaged carbon D box. I commonly try to piece back together whatever
I can and then CA a patch made of .005" carbon over the top. Was wondering
what others do. Just looking forward to the upcoming season and hope
I don't have to do it!
Thanks- John Lorbiecki
