I was just recently carving myself some more blades for my F1B models
and started pondering over whether the blades were any where near the
optimum shape for what we require.

Just to get a feel for the subject has anybody done any in depth studies
on the best blade shape for either 26 or 24 strands.

I know Eugene Larramee did a lot of work on props when working on
the man powered aircraft and I did try those based on his calculations
but found that the high aspect ratio precluded their use unless the
model had a falrly high pylon to allow the blades to fold easily.

Seeing as we have not had any discussion on this subject I thought it
worth while to throw it out to all your readers and see what comes in.

Keep up the good work, it is really appreciated.

John.

If you are interested in learning how to work with carbon fiber and mold
parts I suggest you visit Martin Gregorie's web site. He goes into great detail,
with picture, on how to make molded parts. It doesn't matter if you think you
know it all or not, you will learn something.

His site also has a lot of other interesting stuff about airplanes, wind
tunnels, and the Gregorie family. It is well worth the time to check it out.

See the beautiful Northwest. Enjoy the fine wines of the Willamette Valley and
maybe even drop in on the Spruce Goose. While in the area, break out your FAI
models and join us at Parkers (not Jim and Dallas) Field for the mini events
starting at noon on Friday August 20th and the biggies, starting at 8 am
on Saturday August 21st. This is an Americas Cup contest and is held in
conjunction with the Willamette Models Northwest Free Flight Champs
for AMA events on August 21st and 22nd. The NWFFC's is a National Cup event.

Many of the flyers stay at the Relax Inn on the south end of the Albany
airport. Their phone is 541-926-0170.
It has a pool and a near by Chinese restaurant
that has taken care of us in the past. There are lots of motels and other
restaurants in the area and the flying field is only about six miles
south and east of I-5. Follow the signs after getting off the I-5 going
eastbound towards Lebanon on State Highway 34.

Hope to see you on the flight line.

RFC: An FAI manufacturers trophy
================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I think its about time that the CIAM recognize the state of
competition in the FAI classes: that much of the innovation is coming
from professional model builders and that many sportsmen owe at least
part of their success to this. Accordingly I think that the CIAM
should introduce a manufacturers trophy for the F1A, F1B and F1C
classes.

The rules for this trophy should be:

* all the competitor's flights must be made with models supplied by the
nominated manufacturer.

* the name of the model manufacturer will appear, alongside the
competitor's name, on all score displays and result sheets

* to be eligible, the models must have been purchased complete or be
ARTFs containing only components supplied by the airframe
manufacturer, though F1B may use rubber from any source and F1C may
substitute alternative pans, motors and props. Models bought as
uncovered flat packs for assembly and covering after delivery are
eligible. All other models are to be described as having been built
by the competitor.

* the top three scores for each manufacturer will be totalled to
determine the manufacturer's ranking

* a trophy will be awarded to the top ranked manufacturer in each class
at the World Championships. The trophy will be presented during the
prize-giving ceremony.

The intention of these trophies is to encourage innovation amongst
model manufacturers, thus preventing model design stagnation and
should further encourage the production of easy to fly and reliable
high performance models. F1A, in particular, has remained fairly
static for a long time: the only real innovation since Lepp and
friends came up with the circle tow concept has been the introduction
of the bunt launch by M&K and Stamov and that was over 10 years ago.
I think we're ready for another conceptual leap.

It is not the intention of this proposal to prevent manufacturers
from competing for the trophy with models constructed by themselves
or their organizations.

Thermals,
Martin Gregorie

Fw: Our Perris field is going to be developed

Hi Everyone: I wanted to give everyone a heads-up on what is going on
at our current Perris flying field. Lloyd Price (a Perris regular)
called me and said there was an article in the paper about the property
where we fly. Lewis development has been buying all the property from
the corner (where the K-Mart was abandoned) past where we fly. There is
going to be a huge commercial development, and the abandoned K-Mart is
going to be refurbished. The entire project is slated to be completed
in 2006. When we were leaving the field last week, we saw some guys
with plans out at the abandoned building, so it wouldn't surprise me if
it was started in short order. We are going to look for an alternate
location, and I will keep everyone up to date either by E-mail, or
through Gas Lines. One option, is to go back to our second location on
the other side of the 215. My Dad and I plan on looking for a better
option.

I will have copies of the newspaper article at the field on Wednesday,
so see me if you would like a copy.

Sincerely,

Kevin Sherman

RE: Pre War US Navy Cowl and Tail Markings

Ed asked a question about the various cowl and tail markings on pre-WWII navy
planes.
Squadron/Signal Publications issued a book in 1983 "Navy Air Colors"
showing markings on USMC, US Navy and Coast Aircraft between 1911-1945. Ed ahd
seen
the movie
"Dive Bomber" which prompted the question.

In the 1930's carrier based aircraft (there was a similiar scheme for
catapult launched scout planes from cruisers and battleships) used solid color

tails to denote the carrier they
flew from. The carriers and their airplane tail colors were: Yorktown--Red;
Saratoga-White;
Enterprise-True Blue; Wasp-Black; Ranger-Willow Green; Lexington-Yellow.

An eighteen plane squadron flying from a carrier would be divided into six
three plane sections. The leader of each three plane section would have a
solid color cowling. The plane assigned to his right wing would have the top ha
lf
of the cowling painted that section color--his left wingman would have the
bottom half of the cowling painted that section color.

There would also be a color band on the side of the fuselage aft of the
wing--the color band would be the same color as the cowling.

This rather elaborate color scheme made for pretty airplanes--and also
allowed easy identification at a distance.

You could identify the leader of the 3rd section ov VF (Fighting Squadron)2
flying off the carrier Lexington as follows: The aircraft had a yellow tail;

since it was a section leader's aircraft, its cowl was a solid color (blue in
this instance); there was a blue color band around the fuselage aft of the
wing. The black number 2 was in front of the band (indicating
that it was Squadron 2); the letter "F" was in white on the blue band,
indicating that it was a fighter squadron; the black number 7 was in back of th
e
band--since the airplane was the 7th one in the squadron.

These pre-war color schemes were beautiful--but also highly visible.

After WWII started these fancy color schemes all went away. Carrier planes
got painted Sea Blue on the top and Intermediate Sea Blue on the bottom. By 44

and 45 the skies in the Western Pacific were flooded with a bunch of dark
blue airplanes. Pilots still had a need to be able to visually identify
squadron mates. The Navy adopted a system of white geometric markings on the t
ails
and ailerons or wingtips of the aircraft. Thus all planes flying off fast
attack carrier CV-17 Bunker Hill had a long white arrow pointed upward on their

tails--and f the sane long white arrow pointed forward on the top of the wing.

BOM is not the same as Juniors
==============================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Mr. Morrel,
My questions about Jrs.' abilities were in no way pushing a religion (BOM)
other than aeromodeling education. With knowledge and skills comes a degree of

self -sufficiency, which older generations have the advantage of, due to some
amount of model building in background. Obviously, the ability to build and
repair AMA type models is not too similar to modern FAI, but one should start
somewhere, from a curricular, or developmental view. My implied premise was
that it's not enough to only *operate* a model, but apparently many readers do

not agree. I had hoped my questions would result in freewheeling brainstorming

about how we as a community (or I as individual--SEN 874, clarifications)
might help current or future Jrs. become more rounded and grounded, but instead

this almost devolved into a BOM referendum. Apparently enough sportsmen here
don't agree this is much of a problem, so sorry I brought it up.
Mark Bennett

[Mark

There is no need to be sorry - We all have different ideas
and even if we do not agree all the time it is very important
to discuss them. We always can learn from others even
if we disagree. I think that what you have to say
was very valuable so please do not feel inhibited
about expressing your opinion.

Clearly there are some juniors who want to 'just' fly,
other who want to build and others who want to some of both ...

This online 'conservation' will give those who want a particular kind
of help an idea where to got to get it ]

Your Comments

Hi Roger,

Your comments at the end of the last SEN regarding BOM and Juniors cut off
in mid-sentence. Can you send the entire commentary?

I think Amanda Barr's comments are dead on target. It is interesting to me
that many older modelers offering opinions on BOM speak as though they are
trying to protect some pre-ordained right that youngsters have to build a
model airplane. But most of the Juniors evidently want no part of it. They
would prefer to fly. And that is somehow understandable, when you stop and
think about it.

Take care. See you at the Finals.
