FW: Wing Wake: Up or Down?

Hi Tony,
In response to your query in SEN, years ago in the Digest, Fred
Pearce did a piece showing that planes in our RE # region sink
faster in glide than the wake drops, hence a stab that starts
below the wake, stays below it during stalls.
I made a Nordic in the 70s with a high tail[wing at 10 degrees,
stab at 7 degrees, relative to boom].
It glided fine until disturbed[by lift or anything]then it fell
out of the air, like a wounded duck.
Finally I redid the angles to 3 degrees in the wing, 0 stab.
It then flew normally and was a fine thermalling glider, in fact,
I used it to win a team spot at 1984 Finals.

Did anyone pick up some extra stickers or t-shirts from Hungary they would
be willing to sell me?

Thanks in Advance,

The first place with a perfect score Brian Bauer cannot be beaten.
Avalone can move on to the team if he gets a good [close to perfect]
Am Cup Score. Secor can overtake Coussens if he improves
his Am Cup score by one point! Barron can improve his placing by improving
him America's cup score but it requires others to not get good America's Cup
scores to make the team.

Icarex waterproof?

During F1A day at the World Champs it was raining until noon. I flew a
short modern model, covered with Icarex and 1 coat of 50% dope.
Very soon water filtered below the covering all over the dbox area.
Although model was flying ok, all that extra weight could be avoided.
Makarov told me they had no water at all into the Icarex covering, a new
type, not doped, coming from Japan.
I would like to know other people experiences during the day and how
Icarex worked for them or how to avoid that problem.
Just in case we will get rain during next Max Men ;-)

Roger

Although AMA was offered the correct F1B scores, their software (or Web page
requiremeents) allows posting only a single flight score for a contestant,
thus resulting in total expressed scores for 3rd and 4th places being higher
than for 1st and 2nd because 3rd and 4th were settled by continued flyoffs.
Use of asterisks with footnote explanations was also suggested but not done.

The scores will be posted soon in correct format on the NFFS web site
freeflight.org/

For now the scores were:

Charlie Jones 1260+289
Robert Biedron 1260+249
Andrew Barron 1260+200+300+360
Ed wiley 1260+200+300+242
David Ellis 1243
Eddie Avallone 1242
Philip Scheiman 1233
Tom Ioerger 1215
Taylor Gunder 1211
Sarah Radziunas 1201

Hope this helps.

Hi, Tony.

you are probably right about the 30-1 Nordic...I just used the occasion to
spout off on the subject of T tails.

As I mentioned I have tried many T tail variations on... Hmm..
Mentholies?( I
guess that is what Bogie would preferably call them ) over the years. The
one ship that gave me the most trim fits had a low wing and a T tail. The
ongoing
problem was it always cranked off to one side or the other -- which didn't
fit in well with my new-fangled bunt system. Putting the wing and stab on a
conventional fuselage with pylon turned it into a good flyer..

When I read Hoffman's bit on the advantage of having a preferable slope on
the axis
of the mean moment of inertia the light bulb went off in my head. I had
built a creature
that was unstable by nature. The T tail was part of the problem...not
because of the
wake especially but because it help screw up the proper slope of the axis.

Incidentally, There is an article on the position of stabs in an NFFS
Symposium circa
early 1990s. That is where I picked up most of my information on the
relationship
between the stab and an impinging wing wake.

If I understood it originally, and now remember correctly, there are two
"streams"
of air involved. One is the downwash, which of course goes down as you
suggested.
The second is the wing's wake which trails off the wing at a tangent
according to the
relative wind. The aspect that caught my attention was understanding where
the dirty air
went when a ship did a bunt. An impinging wake could make for some recovery
problems.

All that said, the biggest pain I have with the T tail configuration is that
it snaps booms
when the fuse stops quick and the stab keeps going. I now mount my stabs
right on the
blunt end of the tail boom. They can't snap anything in two...although at
the end of a
100 mph vertical power dive the inertia might telescope the fuse down to
half its
original length. Hmmm..? HEY! A flying wing! (just kidding, mike)

I will Find lift again!
=======================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I am recovering from what could possibly have been the contest
that ended my total participation from free flight. I went to the hotel
on a day I received 4th place at the Nationals and I was in tears, but
not of joy this time. That night I came to grips with the fact that all
the hard work, the passion, and the traveling was all for not as I became
acquainted with the fact that I was not going to be going to Europe on
the jr team as I had so badly hoped and yearned for. I did a lot of
thinking. I thought "has this sport burned me out?" Should I quit? And
most of all I thought was all this worth it? After about 3 minutes of
thinking I realized there was no way in heck that I was Going to let this
one trip beat me and that there was no question that this was worth
everything I went through, after all this is free flight. In about 200
seconds in that Days in, in Muncie I thought extremely hard about what I
wanted to do when I started flying again, if I started flying again. I
thought to myself I could take the easy way out and just duck the sport
and find something else to do. But I realized something and that is that
my life would be left with such a gaping hole without free flight. I
also realized that I was no longer a kid in this sport. So I arrived at
one conclusion and that is that there are two options. Those options were
1.quit sell all the models and find something else to do. or 2. recommit
myself like I had never done before and get some new equipment and start
where you left off. It took me about 2 minutes to make that decision.
But I came up with the final decision and ordered the new wings,
requested the contest days off from work and am already looking forward
to the endless October! This is not to say that I am still very depressed
and disappointed about what happened to me in Muncie but I have one thing
to say to conclude this completely random rambling. And that is that
although I am in a huge downer, I WILL FIND LIFT AGAIN!

Fly Max Win
Benjamin Coussens

PS:Since I am no longer a child im this sport, I will be taking over the
coussens family free flight name "Squatter" its is my time to carry on
the legacy!
