I have just returned from Moscow Idaho and the great Kibbiedome Annual.
We flew from 8AM to 8PM for four days, any event any time. 135 foot clear
the entire length of the football field, smooth ceiling, no girders. the
big news: there is a new big gun on the indoor scene.Mark Bennet took
the measure of Jim Richmond andSteve Brown as well as the others by
winning F1D. He put up two flights of over 31 minutes. Conditions :79
degrees,31% humidity constant 12 hours each day.

rodger.
ronnie thompson went to the nats this year.
he entered eight gas events and took first place in
six events and a second and a third in the other two
events.
this is some kind of flying.
thx don.

[Don

There are times when I feel that editorially etc we have mellowed
and departed from true SCAT tradition ...

going back to our origins, I can say in true Hartillian fashion
that I do not see how someone could enter in 8 gas events at
a contest seeing there are only 2 - F1C and F1J .. with possibly
a extension to include the Puppy ....]

* Andrew's time looks wrong but it must be correct as it came
from the AMA

Also I note some glider flyers are seeing the light and moving
to the #1 event , firstly Mr Bradley, then Prof Barron and
David D must be the smartest seeing he figured it at
the youngest age ?

Roger,

I have to agree with Skykieng (Down with T-tails) that T-tails are not the
best choice for most FF models. Hoerner points out that T-tails are
susceptable to deep stall. This results from the stab going from clean air
to the reduced velocity of the wing wake as the angle of attack increases,
creating havoc with stability. A stiking example of this was my Big Ten,
30:1 Nordic which would only do 1/4 the time if stalled off the line as when
floated off.

Guess Bogie would suggest making a model of the model to sort out stability
problems, but I always get a lot of flak for that. Still is a good idea
that I usually use to verify the problem, rather than avoiding it.

The high tail has distinct advantages in protecting the tail from landing
damage. My first Nordic (Desert Rat) was based on Hank Cole's Tail high
record holder. The torsional problems were avoided by running the boom up
to the stab. Possibly due to the close coupling and tip or poly dihedral
the deep stall never got out of hand. Both of these models enjoyed good
contest results and set AMA records.

While it is possible to make sucessful tail-high machines, a pylon is more
stable and gets the wing in cleaner air for better performance.

Up with Pylons,
Thanks to you and Geroge for keeping

FYI, Joe's photo biz website is: picturejoe.com

I want to thank you, of course, & Dr. Bob Perkins and all the NATS
volunteers for all the fine work you did to make the 2003 NATS one
of the best ones yet.

At this time I must wish son John and the rest of our Jr FF Team the very
best in their quest for supremicy at next year's World Championships!

Sincerely,
Lee
