Closed loop controls

Roger

I have just been catching up with a batch of ScatEN and was deciding that I
would need to write to say that the 2001 edition of the sporting code is
now on the FAI web site and contains the closed loop rule wording.
Now Jim Bradley has put it exactly right so all I need say is that I agree
exactly with Jim's interpretation.

Grass for Lost Hills

Roger, In relation to the grass variety for Lost Hills, The idea of going
to the local ag service is the way to go. There are special grasses that
reseed themselves, similar to the grasses at Galeville. All that is necessary
is to cut them maybe once a year if needed. The galeville field was very dry
in a lot of areas due to the heat radiated from the runways in the summer,
You could fry eggs on that concrete. But after the Skyscrapers cleaned out
the brush and cut everything, it was amazing how the grasses came back after
not being taken care of for over 45 years, they became dense and thick in a
little over a year, choking everything else out. I would believe some thing
similar to those varieties would be available in the Lost Hill area. I will
drop $100 into the kitty for the grass seed. You don't have to put all this
in the newsletter, just let however know I am willing to help with a few
bucks. regards, Joe

Sense of the sensors
====================

Roger,

I was wondering what all the lawyers were going to do when the estate tax is
dropped. They have job security in the FF arena.

Was going to point out that a number of passive sensors (as opposed to
active ones which are banned in certain applications) are available. I had
heard that thermocouples which generate electrons in response to a
temperature difference were passive while a thermistor is active as it
requires electricity from an external source to produce a signal.

Britannica.com and the Instrument Society of America take the opposite view,
while the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers are 180deg out
and agree with what I'd always heard.

Peter K Stein, major autority in such matters thinks the terms active and
passive are useless and confusing. He has used self-generating & similar
terms for decades.

Whether active or passive, its for sure the FAI will ban it despite what the
rule states.
