Fellow SO mentors ( ! ) :

Would you care to recommend a plastic prop
from all of the items offered in the hobby shop.

I have found several options, and looking at them
- I don't want to resort to intuition.=20
Needs a whirling arm testing assault.

My god ! there's even a little gear box ( all plastic ).
It has a nice lookling prop to go with it.
Super Marine remembered.

The State level flying site apparently is about 40 ft.

Its a shame when this type of information is aloud to stay in view for so
long. Lets see if I can put some facts forward.

The Teflon works just fine if you follow some rules.
Rule! Understand the concept in the first place. This a patented system that
is a break through in technology. Teflon only is affected by one thing,
temperature. It doesn't care how it got there, it only cares that it is too
hot.
How do engine get to hot? 1: The first one is the fuel formula is wrong and
it causes too much heat. 2: Running your engine at peak power on the bench
which will do it all the time. 3: running the engine ether over compressed
or too lean. 4: running an engine that is coated with varnish that insulates
the heat transfer out of the engine. I could go on but I thing you get the
picture. Some people don't get a run others use the same disc for years.

Some questions were debated in FFML about CG location and Jossien'
Formula.
I suppose that they are related to what we call "new" Jossien's Formula,
but there is also the "old" Jossien's Formula, which is for me much
simpler and much better.
This is:

CG location(%of wing chord)= Stab area x Moment Arm x Wing Span x K factor
Wing Area x Wing Area

The only problem being to find one's own K factor, but it is very easy to
calculate it from similar and successful models.
For instance I use on my F1Cs a K factor ranging from 66 to 69. For F1B
and F1G I used a lower K (I would have to search in my records, but
probably between 55 and 60)
The very important thing is to use in all calculations the Mean
Aerodynamic Chords (MAC) for wing and tailplane. For instance the moment
arm from wing root to tail root has to be increased if the tailplane
leading edge is rearswept.
Of course the result is given for wing MAC, not root. This was not
considered in original old Jossien's Formula.

You can now use safely the "Jossien-Boutillier" Formula.

Incidentally Rene Jossien (nickname: Le Saint) is a good friend and
was my Maestro when I started building F.F. models in 1956. I used to
read his features every month in Modele Magazine and met him only
years later when I retuned to active modelling in 1967 after some some
years wasted in University and Army.

Dear Editor, stumbled into SCATEN recently from the
NFFS website and got signed up. I flew F1A's from '69
to about '87, then '95 and '96. When Marc Nagasawa
died in early '80, I ended up with his folding glider
stooge. In response to Rey Mazzocco's query in a
recent SCATEN, I took some pictures of it, and I am
attaching them to this, in case you have a way to post
them or a link to them. The wing is an old 1/2a gas
wing, but show how the wing is trapped by 1/16" wires
coming over the TE. The launch rails fold in half, and
the legs/ struts fold under. I don't know of a model
damaged by use of this stooge, and I used it a lot.
While I read Linko Salo's article a couple of times
and understand the basic concept, I can't say that I
could build anything from it that wasn't hazardous!

If Craig Cusick is still around, live and well, give
him my greetings, please! See ya in October!

Glider Self Launcher.

The simplest and most effective self launcher I used or saw is attached
in a pdf. Two 12mm (1/2 inch) wooden dowels and two short pieces of 3mm
(1/8) music wire. It holds the model firmly even in strong wind. A quick
pull on the line and the model is free...

To launch a glider all you need are two rods about 1.5 m long. The rods,
which can be wood dowel or al tube have one end sharpened to stick into the
ground and a stop about the size of a matchbox taped on about 0.5 m from the
other (non-sharpened) end. The rods are stuck into the ground about 25 cm
apart at an angle of 30 deg to the horizontal. The rods should be splayed
out so the top ends are spaced by 40- 50 cm to give better support for the
wings. It is usually convenient to prop the rods up on a model box to
maintain the angle. The glider simply rests on the rods with the wing
trailing edge against the stops. The tail is UNDER the rods. When you pull
the line the glider simply slides up and off the rods. If you want, the
stops can have fingers that extend out over the wing to stop the model
getting blown off the stooge. This is useful if it is basically calm but
there are a few gusty periods. Of course if it is at all breezy you don't
need a launcher - just run and slowly let line out. When your friends ask if
they can use your self launcher make sure to tell them the tail must go
below the rods - otherwise it will be removed by the stops!

While flying in Japan with the YSF group I observed several flyers using a
very simple F1A sself launcher that was based on a bicycle brake. The brake
was mounted on the top of a rod of about 1 meter in length that was attached
to a base plate staked to the ground. The brake cable was attached to the
plate holding the brake closed so that it griped the model's body. The
model was launched by pulling the line forward causing the brake to release
its grip. I published a drawing of this launcher in the Magnificant
Mountain Men news letter several years ago. Please contact Rick Pangel at

Tapio,

I have received several direct responses to my query including a drawing and
some pics, along with several ideas on how to improve them. If anyone is
interested in what I have learned, just let me know.
