Here are overdue Wawayanda contest results reports
Free Flight Friends,
In June this year were some fine Free Flight competitions at our field in Wawayanda, NY. The first was the Hatschek International Challenge (previously known as the Skyscraper International Challenge, now renamed in honor of Bob Hatschek), which was ultimately held June 8-9, 2013 (sanction number 13-1758). The second was the Skyscraper Annual held June 22-23, 2013 (sanction 13-1416). I apologize for not getting these result reports out sooner.
A highlight of these meets was continued dominance by our young adult and youth flyers, plus some older flyers newly returned to the sport in recent years or new to flying at Wawayanda.
At the Hatschek Challenge, F1B was won by Brian Pacelli finishing with a score of 1306 seconds, just two seconds ahead of Carrol Allen, F1H was won by junior Gina Barron ahead of Bob Sifleet, F1G was won by Yuda Avla, just four seconds ahead of Tom Vaccaro, B-30 was won by Tom Juell, ahead of Bill Buss and Don Rousseau, with junior fliers Rebecca Avla and Joel Yori not far behind, and another new to our flying scene, Tony Loomis did fine in catapult posting a nice individual flight of 74 seconds on his way to second place. The full results are recorded below.
At the Skyscraper Annual, the top two spots in F1B and the top four spots in F1A were by young adult and junior fliers. They achieved excellent total times (max-out and near max-out) in turbulent and mildly windy conditions that scared off some of the older fliers. F1B was won by Sarah Radziunas with a near max-out (only 13 seconds drop on one flight) with Brian Pacelli not far behind. F1A was won by Timothy Barron with a max out, with Peter Barron second, junior Joel Yori third and junior Gina Barron fourth, ahead of myself and Bob Sifleet. Other popular events included F1G, won by Tom Vaccaro, P-30 with seven contestants, won by Bill Buss, and the All Gas combined, with six contestant postings, lead by Clark Darling, Al Vollmer, and Arnold Waldner. For the specifics and for additional event results see the details also below.
An editorial comment: the conditions at the Annual were challenging but not as windy as some who left thought they would be. For instance, during Timothy's max out win in F1A, only one flight went past the road at the middle of the field. Those who flew got a chance to learn which models were the best thermal performers. In my case, seeing other models thermal much better than my hybrid airfoil model led me to make three changes to it (shorter fuselage, 4dm rather than 3.5 dm stab, and thinned the wing airfoil toward the rear to move the high-point forward -- yes, a significant surgery). Practice sessions alone had not revealed the extend of the need for these improvements.
Here are the results. I write either Challenge (for the Hatschek International Challenge formerly the Skyscraper Challenge) or I write Annual (for the Skyscpraper Annual) before each event so that the recorders for America's Cup, National Cup, and Team Selection (junior and open) can get it right, along with the rest of us. The last column reports total. The contestant name is at the end of each line to facilitate column alignment.
Thermals,
Andrew Barron, on behalf of CDs Alan Abriss and Dave Acton

Congratulations to Grand Champion Dan Berry. In his first trip to Denver
he showed the skills of a true champion. What I mean of course is that
he hit a tree on his first flight! (He's only the sixth person in 34
years to do that at Lowry, as far as I know!) Seriously, Dan showed
great skill in his Championship victory. Stan Buddenbohm had the same
number of GC points but lost the tiebreaker. Great flying, Stan. I did
make one mistake in the Rubber Championship scoring: yours truly won it,
over Herb Kothe, 27 to 25. Congratulations to the other category
Champions: Junior - Jace Pivonka, Glider - Stan Buddenbohm, and Power -
Dan Berry.
As I've said many times RMFFC is a collaborative effort. I want to
recognize the stalwart volunteers who helped at the scoretable, ran mass
launches, did setup/teardown, and performed myraid other tasks. These
men deserve 100% of the credit for making this RMFFC a contest that all
of us could fly in and enjoy. Please thank them next time you see them.
If you helped and your name is not on the list, I apologize.
Scale Judges: Marc Sisk and Darold Jones.
F1Q calibration: Jerry Murphy.
Setup/teardown: Jace Pivonka, Chuck Etherington, Todd Reynolds, Jerry
Murphy.
Mass Launch Directors: Jerry Murphy, Randy Reynolds, Darold Jones
Scorekeeping: Bill Lovins, Ray Boyd, Troy King, Darold Jones, Dave
Wineland, Jerry Murphy.
Glider Pen: Mark Covington.
Watermelons: Pete McQuade.
Raffle Coordinator: Todd Reynolds.
Finally, a big thank you to all who donated items for the raffle! This
raised nearly $500 for the club! Diels Engineering (4 kits, visit
www.dielsengineeringinc.com), Don DeLoach 5 kits, Ray Boyd 5 kits, Marc
Sisk 6 items, Jerry Murphy 5 items, George Avila 6 kits, Fred Carstens 4
kits.
One final note: We do have a limited number of RMFFC t-shirts for sale
to the general public. They feature 3-color artwork on the front and 1
color on the back. Short sleeve, 100% cotton. Quattities limited, sizes
