Outrageous October, no Outstanding October, yes

This October we had the best week of weather ever that I can remember at Lost Hills since we started flying there. We used F1U.org's technology to put the results live on line. Special thanks to Victor Stamov for getting it going, Alex Kulakovsky for doing all the work, and over here, Bill Booth for enabling the connection and Walt Ghio and Valerie McKeever for doing all then work. The results were updated throughout the day and available on the Internet for anyone who wanted them. It took us a little organizing to make sure we had the right people and equipment next time it will be even better.

The big outstanding World Cup item is in F1B so we were pleased to see Andrey Burdov and Anatoli Ribchenkov from Russia and Georgia as well as top local contenders Alexander Andrikov and Walt Ghio.

At this time of the year flying at Lost Hills is not easy. The thermal conditions are very difficult, with many small “broomstick” thermals. There was virtually no wind the whole week and this made it even harder. The temperature moved from warm to hot for the last few rounds of the Sierra Cup but it was not a real problem.

F1B had 21 out of 38 in the flyoff. The big drop in the 5 min round was Anatoli who broke too many motors, I guess he needs to figure that October at Lost Hills is way different from February when he won the Maxmen. The 7 min round was tough. The temperature had dropped and the lift hard to find. It seemed that there were two patches of lift during the round and the local World Cup contenders, Alex and Walt missed them. There was some discussion if a 9 min round could be flown but wind towards the gypsum pits stopped that. So the 10 minute round was flown next morning. During a test flight Andrey Burdov crashed the flapper he had used for all rounds so far. This is a airplane with a 4 position variable camber wing. There is a servo in the connector end of the tail boom, the operates the stabilizer with a closed loop similar to that used by M&K and Stamov for their F1As. There are also two lines to control the rudder functions. Andrey used this airplane throughout the event. It looked very good but did not really show out right superiority. During a pre flyoff test flight Andrey forgot to connect the rudder lines and the model went in with a fast right turn. So he resorted to a more conventional model for the flyoff. It is very important for non-USA readers to understand that there is still quite a depth in USA F1B flying but two of the people that I would have expected to do well, Bill Booth and George Batiuk had problems too, George stalling all the way down with the setting that had been OK in all previous contest early AM flights.Ittai had to leave early to catch his flight back to Israelso missed the 10 min round.

In F1C we were very pleased to see Eugene Verbitski from the Ukraine and he ended up in the flyoff with two others flying his flapper F1C Verbitski showed why he has been on top for so long with a flawless launch, tremendous acceleration and whose motor made a sound was music to any gear head.

On the social side we were visited by the Sloans whom had catered on the field for many years but recently retired. They looked in fine fettle and enjoyed chatting to everyone.  Austin Gunder dropped by to see his friends but had to leave early as AV have him working up to the last moment before he goes into the Navy.
