Sierra Cup Update

A quick update on Sierra Cup October 14 through the October 17 from the CD. First, please send your entries in so I can set the poles. This year we are trying something new for the banquet. The 2012 Junior Team is having a fund raiser Saturday October 15 at the field as opposed to our usual Wasco Elks Club. For those that have sent your entries in with banquet costs and do not want to participate in the fund raiser, I will refund your banquet costs when you register. For those that wish to support the Junior Team just send the usual feee on the entry blank and it will get you a ticket to the on field fundraiser BBQ. If you do not wish to participate, you may take $20 off the usual entry. I look forward to Endless October...should be a good time.

The Importance of Consistency of Description

Sirs,

In our sport it is important that there is a universal language that describes key facets of what we do. In our chosen professions these tend to be acronyms and in Free Flight it is no different. We have amongst other VIT, AR, DT, R(C)DT, etc and I now present another key one for consideration and verification by you, the Owners of the Acronym People, or OAPs for short.

Now picture the scene. You are a F1A flyer, towing your new ship around the skies. You feel the thermal building and get ready for the hero launch. You pull the model to the side and down until you are in the SOUP*, the Sense Of Urgency Position (* copyright Fantham/Edge), and then you Come Round The Corner Heaving, aka CRoTCH, prior to releasing the towline.

I ask that CRoTCH is duly adopted and communicated by Roger's fine organ.

THINKING BACK TO THINKING FORWARD

Mike Kelville stikes a chord with many I'm sure, but the days of  "stick and tissue" are not gone and in fact are growing..!!  Mike only needs to join the FLYING ACES and bang, he's building stick and tissue again with a great bunch of guys who don't spend a trillion on thermal finders, but just have lot's of fun.
I mentioned "growing"...just take a look at the new WESTFAC Regional that FLYING ACES are doing out West [  www.westernfac.com  ] and watch as new squadrons are being formed.

Mike...ther's still a lot of fun going on out there.....  Many Maxes to All

Editor's Comment

SEN is the publication of the Southern California Aero Team - SCAT a club that whose primary emphasis is FAI free flight. But we support all kinds of free flight activities.  We know that different people like a different aspects of our hobby.  Some people like to fly a wide variety models, even R/C or C/L! :-)  For this reason even though our emphasis is FAI we always publish in SEN we always publish information about such events as WESTFAC, AMA events by the San Valeers etc because we know that some of our readers are interested and because the organizer's of those events send up the information.

We do know that be it FAI as we fly or that FAC as the Flying Aces fly or anywhere in the spectrum between we need to adapt to our changing times. Many aspects flying sites, age demographics, the economy, leadership changes, etc  all affect what we do.  While we can always benefit from the lessons of the past it is adapting to the future that is the most important.

The reason that each of us takes part in the class of flying that we do is because we enjoy it, we like the challenges, the sense of achievment we get when we see our airplanes flying, we like the fellowship of other flyer not matter if they from the next county or another continent.  For some people it is important to build models that remind them of their youth, for others the innovation of trying new ideas, for others build scale models is a reminder of the rich aviation heritage that is behind modern aviation.

We are always looking for positive ideas on how to continue to advance all aspects free flight and adapt it to today's world.
