Thinking back ...

Thinking back to the late '60s, early '70s:  many of us flew F1H (what was then called A/1 Nordic) at Taft, Elsinore and Sepulveda.  Dozens of entries, straight-tow all.  There were no electronic aids.....no carbor fibre.....no mylar.....and most certainly no pre-built "toys" from far-off lands.  We flew balsa-and-tissue Jetstreams, Lil' Dips, Topkicks and original designs, mostly with fuse d/t's.  It was a fun time.....a relatively cheap and easy way to participate in F/F, and very enjoyable.  Today, technology has taken over.....and everyone wonders why participation in F/F is declining?

Unlimited number of events at ... ?

Hello;
Here is one thing that most feel needs to be fixed. There is a limit on events allowed at one site, whether it be Lost Hills or Muncie or Barons field.  Question is Why? You can only count 2 contests at one site so why is there a limit on the number of events at one site? The San Valeers Annual has tried for years to get on America's Cup list and cannot because slots filled to max for events already. Simple fix allow any long time, long run contest to have America Cup status. You will increase participation for sure at San Valeers, which is good for them and all fliers. No downside to this and may then create more activity at other contests if more fliers have points from Lost Hills or Muncie. If  3 or 4 fliers have max points at say Lost Hills and feel they have a chance for America's Cup they will be more inclined to travel to other contests across the country.  It is a win/win situation. Just a thought.

Thanks for the input ...

remember who we are and what we fly

We fly FAI free flight airplanes, they need a reasonable space.  We are not complaining about the technology.  I was looking for a way of better scheduling the events we have so that people would come or not have date conflicts.

The fields close to Los Angeles- Sepulveda basin, Mile Square and Elsinore do not exist any more.  I was suprised when I met the late Roman Ramirez, clipper cargo record holder at a social gathering who said he gave up competition Free flight when Free Flight stopped at Sepulveda basin because at the other sites he could not go home to Santa Monica for lunch.  !  It is the same in other major urban areas. There are people who fly small free flight airplanes on smaller fields or indoors, but that not what we are talking about.  they are cheap and they have a good time, but ...

What I pointed out was that there were 3 events ,   in different parts of the country all on the same day, if those organizers had discussed thier schedule amongst themselves they might have got better turn out.  There are people who drive to both Muncie and Wawaynda.  We are planning some of our meetings as if we are all retied, if we do that all we will attract is retired people.

Keep the ideas coming ...

Motel reservation alert

FYI, on the way down from Way Up North, I stopped in at Lost Hills to refuel Element & the Ol' Leeper. While there I reserved Motel 6 for NFFC & OTT OCT events. **** The desk lady mentioned rooms were going fast since it is crop picking time for pistachio, etc. Might put out a GQ to anyone needing rooms for those events. Ciao, Leeper

**** Not sure if I understand the Leeper's codes here, we could say Outrageous October flying at Lost Hills
