More new records for Taron & Sevak!

Today at Tustin Blimp hanger Taron & Sevak Malkhasyan set new Junior Cat 4 records! Hearty congratulations to them both! Taron did ~134sec in IHLG & Sevak did ~95sec in ICLG. [FYI: The prior records were set in 1974 & 1999, respectively].They both used their outdoor gliders, so it is obvious they have gobs more potential, if given more opportunities such as this.

Norm Furutani, Ralph Ray & Stan B are working hard to better the recently set IHLG[F1N] & ICLG Open records, but yesterday & today's efforts mainly yielded shredded and/or raftered aircraft. Tomorrow is the third day of this RT, so keeping fingers crossed for all of them!

Ciao,

Leeper

Glide Omarama

  From: Lincoln Vincent
Mike Roberts is in for the treat of his life with Glide Omarama, especially if the wave along the Southern Alps is working. My wife Moira went for a flight in a Double Discus (at aeromodellers discount) during the last event two years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Omarama is one of the great fullsize gliding sites, a world championship was held there. There are also nice cabins, the property of individual glider owners, available at NZ$100 a night. The Omarama Airfield is on the opposite side of the town from the model flying area, a drive of little more than five minutes.Lincoln

2010 Jr. Team selection Newsletter Number 4

Dec. 22, 2009

The Jr Team Selection program is nearing an end. Since the completion of the of the Jr Finals at Muncie this summer, the Jr flyers have been accumulating contest flight time to fulfill the 75-minute qualification time requirement, and the two contests flown after the finals requirement.

An error in Jr Team Letter #3 was been pointed out.  Newsletter 3# stated, “Note the Jr Finals / NATs scores do not count toward the qualification time”.  This wording had been used in previous Jr Team Selection Programs but was dropped for the 2010 program and the two contests after the Jr Finals requirement was added. I apologize to any family and flyers that may have made un-needed long trips due to my error.

The Jr Team Selection committee has been asked if an AMA sanctioned Record Trails is the same as a contest. The answer is yes. An AMA sanctioned  Record Trail  is the same as an AMA sanctioned contest in order to accumulate the Jr qualification time and to count as a post Jr Finals contest.  While it is preferred for Jrs to fly in competition to refine their skills, we recognize that not all Jrs have access to many contests.  We have made the same ruling in previous years and will make this clarification in the 2012 Jr Team Selection program. The qualification time period and the two contests after the Jr Finals period end at the conclusion of the 2009 King Orange contest.

Repeating an important message from the last Jr Newsletter, it is important for those who are interested and did not make the 75% of the winning time to submit an application for the open F1P and open F1B spots.  Jr flyers that did not fly at the Jr Finals may also apply. It is recommended that they fly as many contests as possible and submit the strongest contest records as possible.  At the time of this writing, no applications have been received.

The JrTSC will also maintain the authority to place late entrants in open* Junior Team positions, but is not obligated to fill an open team position. Application for an open* team position must be submitted in writing or email to the JrTSC chairman by Jan 15, 2010**. The Jr must enter (per Section 1.0) and provide contest performance information as an attachment to Form A. If more than one application is received, the JrTSC will use the following criteria to make a selection: the provided contest performance information; other contest performance information; verbal and written references from other free flight flyers; the number of future JrTSPs for which the applicant is eligible. The applicant must fulfill the Qualification requirement per Section 3.1. (75 minutes)

* The released JrTS program states “uncontested” and will be corrected at the next revision.
** The released JrTS program states April 30, 2009 which is incorrect and will be corrected at the next revision. The remainder of the team selection process is described in the Jr Team Selection program which can be found on the NFFS web site.

Americas Cup

KO to go.  Attached is the latest including Dec Eloy and corrections I've gotten.  Hope this generates some Eastern interest with F1G and F1B could be a decider if there are 6 entrants in each.  I'd also say the same for F1A but I will not be able to attend.  Mike McKeever could snach back F1J from Brian V but needs  a 6 entrant win as well.

Jean, Thanks for your letter.  I was missing the Geneseo F1H 2nd place. F1J is correct. You can count  the maximum 2 scores from one field only once. So in the case of two scores at Muncie and two scores at Wayawanda, only the three best scores count. The fourth score must come from a different field.

Thermals,

JIM

  Cycle Flapping

It is my belief that FreeFlight means that once a model is launched, the model is free and there should be no outside human influence on the duration of that flight.

Riding cycles under that model should not be allowed.  It shows extremely poor sportsmanship and lack of respect for the other competitors to have these crazy cycles running wild under a FreeFlight model.

It is my opinion that if the AMA leaders ever see the maneuvers I have observed, they would pass a rule against any cycles being allowed on the flying field.  Just think what that would do to this sport.

Yes, I also have been guilty of these crazy antics but I believe this practice may lead to the extinction of FreeFlight in the USA.

We need to unite and stand together in putting a stop to this practice.  The FAI leaders will never pass a rule against this because there are very few European flyers with cycles.  This is primarily a west coast problem.  If you love this sport, let’s stop the abuse forever.

I would like to challenge every America’s Cup Contest Director to disallow this practice at any of their contests.  To do this, all they have to do is write up a statement on their contest flyer excluding cycles from thermal flapping.

I love this sport, let’s not ruin it.
