F1A Airfoil testing update

Thanks for running the Open Letter in its entirety. Much appreciated.
 
The costs may seem high but Prof, Selig tells me "If it were supported through donations, it would be about a $25k effort.  If you wanted us to digitize the models, it would be a little more (+$3k).  If we did this kind of test for a company, then the cost would easily be double that or go higher.'
So I added about $1000 for manufacturing each model and 10% for incidentals to come up with about $50,000 for fifteen models.
To put the above costs in perspective consider the sums flyers now pay for their factory built F1As, F1Bs and F1Cs. 
 
I have been asked by others if F1B airfoils can be considered. It becomes harder to obtain reliable data as loads reduce at the lower RNs and scatter increases.  I have asked Prof Selig if the test model  chords can be lowered as that would improve tunnel speed and data quality. Still waiting on an answer. So F1Bs could be tried if someone is happy with the above provisos.

Holiday on Ice

Holiday on Ice was an excellent contest this year. The weather on Friday was great for
testing and Saturday was a repeat. I did not go to watch the small events on Sunday, but I
was told the drift was a little less than Saturday. This year the lake was completely
frozen. The second time in thirty years. The ice was thin, but very hard. A few sections
of ice had water with snow on top of it, which made walking a little difficult. The north
end of the lake had deep snow so we went to the South of Gjovik for better conditions.
F1A had forty-one entries. Twenty three made the flyoff with eleven making the five
minute flight. I watched a few flights during the day. Sergy Makarov’s non-flapped
model is quite impressive. He was getting very high on the launch. He used a flapped
model in the flyoff and come in third. Mikhail Kosonozhkin was first with 312 seconds,
John Carter came in second with 302 seconds and Sergy had 290 seconds for the second
seven-minute flight. This is the second year that Mikhail has won.


F1B had twenty six entries and fifteen made the flyoff. The first round was a seven
minute max and seven of us made the max. The second flyoff flight was at 5 pm and
Alex was the winner with a flight of 416 seconds using his six panel model from last
year. Mike Woolner was second with 398 seconds and Victor Rosonoks was third with
388 seconds.
For me it was not a good ending to the day. Great flights all day with the model I used at
the Max Men and then DT at 1:45 for a flight of 129 seconds. The E-timer was on the 9-
minute setting, but for some reason it is set at 1:45 seconds. I have no idea what went
wrong with the setting. On Sunday, I check all the DT files and they are all correct
except for the ninth. For sure, I will recheck all my timers. No idea of what time I would
of got, but the May 99 motor did get me very high.
Model of interest is was Victor Rosonoks. He used very short motors and had runs of
around 35 seconds. Mike Woodhouse timed his flights all day and he told me the climb
is very impressive. Victor won the Bear Cup the week before with this model.
