IKARUS CUP 2008 as new WC plse feedback
Hi US-guys,
it's a pleasure to think about your nice endless october contests in Taft, Los Hills or Sacramento, I flew in past.
Now my radius for flying contests is family and business driven more central Europe. Odessa was a nice high points this year.
Last week the first time, I flew a very nice late autumn contest and Alla & kids were also part of a nice Sunday - especially, when Jasmin was willing and enjoy to chase models with Papa.
So my favorate models are now following: (pictures of Ansgar's family removed)
My friend Martin Meyer and me are thinking now about organzing next year in August, 8-10 th 2007 , the week after traditional Poitou contest an new World CUP contest in F1A, F1B ( no Power possible, because near to small vinary village ) and EUROPE-CUP in F1H, F1G for supporting this future classes ( better flying on small fields). First we like to have a feedback from the Freeflight community. Because Germany has in the end of August 2 WorldCUP contests, we prepare to fly this WC under another flag of neighbour country or do you know a good sponsor country like Saudi Arabia with paying us a great sum for organizing this WC contest under their flag.
So please forward this mail to the travellers of US freeflighters. It's a chance for you to travel in the non World Champs Year to Europe and to fly in 9 days 2 World CUP Contests or if you stay for the 2 other World Cups in end of August ( Salzland CUP and Eifelpokal), you have 4 WC contests in the endless European August 2008 or print this info Paper and distribute this next week in Lost Hills to travelling US flyers friends.
Think about and give me a feedback.
Best regards

we are planning in time for our 25. IKARUS CUP a great event for next August 2008 and would like to have your feedback, not to do thinks without acceptance of your freeflighters. Should we get no feedback or not enough interest we stop our efforts to create a new interesting contest. Because the flying site in Ilbesheim is a great agriculture site around a small vinary village Ilbesheim, with grainfields and sugarbeets, there is only possible to fly glider and rubber models, but no power models. Sorry for you Power Flyers !
Begin of August after grainharvest is the best time for running this big event.
Weatherstability with possibility of nice social evening events with fine food and vine are higher than in October. Better flying in ENDLESS AUGUST 2008 several contests than in October a nice cancelled contest.
Some of you know our expertise in organizing nice, innovative successful contests like German Team contest “Länderpokal” in the 80th or “TOP 12” in the 90th or 24 times IKARUS - CUP … Let’s do and support our efforts by coming to Ilbesheim in August 2008.

While I agree that a FF event should not include R/C for any function during an official flight, I would note that the FAI allows the F2 events (ukies) to send any amount of data up the flying lines to cut engine, retract/extend landing gear, flaps, operate bombay doors, etc. They DO NOT allow Radio or Infra-Red devises, or anything similar, to do the same. I think if you wanted to run data up your towline, you might be allowed to do it. But I wouldn't bet money on it being allowed for any significant length of time!

Editorial comment : it probably would not suprise SEN readers to learn that Ken Bauer has already made a tow hook where by the sportsman can communicate with the model via a series of jerks. However he found that twanging morse code up the line required a level of concentration and dexterity, even for a person of his electronic and musical talent and was a major distractions and hence, just not practical...ah well back to the drawing board!
Maybe if he had put a tin can on the line he could talk to it ? I must admit have heard other sportsmen attempt and even succeed in talking to their models, is this OK ?
More on RDT and a question for Ian ?

Ian, thanks for the clarification and the quick response.
Another argument I've heard is that after the model has maxed the flyer is allowed to control it beyond DT functionality, because the flight has ended and is no longer under timekeeper's observation.
Allowed or not?
And after the model has landed, is RC allowed, e.g., to switch on/off a buzzer, (de)activate GPS etc.??
Ian, you've got the ball again....
ciao

Admiral SCAT,
I agree with Allard's interpretation of the rules and think that the RC unltach suggestion is simply bonkers.
Incidentaly, you can (and I did) modify a twanger hook to include a latch that means you have to exend the twanger spring a certain amount before the twanger will operate in a traditional manner. This does have some advantages, not least the problem with wet monofilament lines slipping through your fingers and causing a premature release.
