Oct. 20 2007 SCAT Am Cup Report

Only 5 more contest left

Rene Limberger’s second place at the SCAT Sierra Cup slipped him past Andrew Barron for first in F1A . Andrew arranged a business trip to allow him to make both the Livotto’s and the SC but the fickle Lost Hills thermals got the better of him as did it many others. This will be a tight race to the end.

Ed Vanlandingham is holding on to his F1B lead. The October contest wins were spread out amount those lower on the scorecard.   Ladi Horak is in second but bonus points are the key and Ladi does not have any. Eddie’s 2006 nemesis, Blake Jensen has  enough bonus points but needs two  non-Lost Hills wins- perhaps another KO airline ticket this year? Blake- its OK to go to Eloy in Dec, you need to replave the Jan score anyway. [note to all- be sure you understand the rules!]. Likewise Alex Andriukov has two 30 point contests so he would need a  first and a second at  two non- Lost Hills contests. Will Alex be traveling?

Ed Carroll looks to have a good grip on F1C. Last years champ, Matt Gewain is in second but would need two wins with 2 bonus points each to overtake Ed, a unlikely scenario for the last 5 contests of the season.

The goal medal 2006 Jr F1P team continues to rule F1P but the competition is catching up. Cody Secor leads this pack but don’t look back, hey is that your dad that won the Sierra Cup?

Peter Brock’s F1G first is looking strong.  Peter should provide adult beverages to Mike Davis and Rich Rohrke for their first places with large bonus points which resulted in Eddie Vanlandingham’s second at Livotto’s and Charlie Jones’ second at Sierra cup which moved Eddie and Charlie into third and second. The unlikely bonus points at the remaining contests will make overtaking Peter improbable.

Saturday of the Sierra Cup saw the flyoff for the Livotto and Sierra Cup F1H contests. I managed to win  first for Sierra Cup but the guy needing a win to secure first place in AmCup was Brian VanNest who did so just minutes later getting the best of me, Mike McKeever, Mike Thompson and Norm Smith- all of us in contention.  Brian’s 7 bonus points looks all but impossible to over take. Looks like I’ll be getting out the trophy polish and handing the perpetual trophy back to Brian in February.

Jean Pailet requires mention here. He is in second in both F1H and F1J. He has demonstrated over many years a high degree of consistency. I have probably printed more Am Cup certificates with his name than any other.  One of these days we will get him to come out to the California and hand him his wins for that year at the AmCup banquet. However, the bonus point theme of this report rings true for Faust Parker. His 5 bonus point lead will be hard to beat in F1J.  In addition to keeping the cyclons humming, Faust inserted a knee replacement in his flying plans. Great to see him up and flying.  Even more amazing is Chuck  Markos flying F1A with a one and one half knee replacement—Bionic Glider Flyer!  I digress.  Mike Roberts has the best chance of catching Faust—how about a quick buzz to Las Vegas in you new chase car?

The provisional events are moving along.  To become a full fledge AmCup event with a perpetual trophy award at the banquet, SCAT is looking for  50 percent participation in the AmCup contests with an average number of participants of three.  In 2006, F1P reached 48% and 2.5 average participation and so with the generous donation from Jim Bradley (who had been offering for several years) and Bob VanNest’s superb woodworking skills we created the F1P perpetual trophy and established F1P as an official AmCup event. F1Q for 2007 is at 40% with average participation of 2.0 and is drawing near. F1E  with its flying site challenge is at 20% with  average participation of 4.2

Frank Pollard has the lead in  F1Q but Dick Ivers could pull past him with a win.

Peter Brocks organized and held the first  F1E contest near Sodona Az, The pictures look spectacular.  SCAT allowed him to do this injunction with the up coming AZ champs in December, that is no additional AmCup $25 fee. Because the flying site requirements are so diverse from the other “flat land” events, this flexibility of dates was provided.  This flexibility for F1E is offered to all clubs and organizers. Contact me for the 2008 season if you desire to do the same.  The weather was unseasonably windy but the three flyers flew, Peter won and so maintained his first place F1E position.  Bridgett, is there room in your RV for double AmCup winner?

Several tight races remain. Be part of the action!

2007-2008 USA Jr Team Selection Standing

With five more AmCup Contest left, the F1B and P teams looks to be defined. Michelle Radziunas  needs to meet the 300 point minimum excepted score. We plan to send a four  flyer F1P team with Cody Secor flying as the defending World Champion.

There is a very close race for the  second and third spots in F1A, Timothy Barron has top points that can not be  exceeded. The next 4 flyers are with in a 30 second spread on a standard 1260 second contest competing for the second and third team spots. The team Selection Team Committee again urges all parties involved to make the competitions as level a playing field as possible.

There are several steps to complete before declaring the official 2007-2008 USA Jr Team. At the conclusion of the King Orange Contest. The final scores will be checked and verified. The top 4 placing Jr and their family will be notified by AMA and giving  team application and legal documents to fill in, sign and return. After all the paper work reviewed, the Team will be announced.
Currently it is believed that the  2008 Jr WC will be in the Ukraine but the actual field has not been announced.

Sierra Cup 2007 Results

The 31st Annual Sierra Cup is in the books and I will be sending an article to NFFS with a number of photos taken by Mary Smith. For those not there, you missed a forgettable Mini day with some rain and some wind that made folks earn their high places. You also missed one of the best "Big" days we have had in some time. Light and variable winds under cloudy sky that created some big thermals yet created tricky lift if you were not patient. Large flyoffs were well managed with help from a large timer pool. Peter Allnutt flew well to win F1A, Elmer Nelson got the only max in the 7 minute round for a popular win, with Aimee Schroedter second, and the flapper beats the folder in Eugene Verbitsky's F1C win. A good time! Thanks for all the help and participation. Any thoughts on next year? We could do Livotto, the Sierra Cup and Team Finals all in little over a week? Let me know what you think.
