Bounces

We have had an increasing number of ISP claiming that SEN is SPAM. Normally the bounce message tells us this and we approach the ISP to have this fixed. Sometimes we will ask you as a subscriber to do that as the ISP may not give us enough information.

Dear Scat readers

About GPS questions

My company Optimal Tracking develops a Gps tracking system for Kids. This is the continuation of a prototype I have done for free flight.
It includes two units: Kid unit and Parent unit. Both have Gps included.
The Kid unit weights 13 grms including battery. The autonomy is 15 hours. It sends a signal every 30 seconds to the parent unit. The ground range is 3 kms. Much more in the air.
The parent units looks like a cell phone and displays a map with the location of the Kid.
It will be available beginning 2008 for 350 Euros.

I will send documentation to the Scat at this time.

December 8 and 9 we will have the Arizona Free Flight Championships in Eloy, AZ. This is the last America's Cup and National Cup contest West of the Missisippi for the year 2007. There are AMA, NFFS, and SAM events plus the separate FAI contest. The two fliers with information about this Championship can be downloaded from the Master Contest Calendar at the NFFS web site  http://www.freeflight.org/competition.htm . It should be cool in the mornings but warm up to about 70° during the day.

It would be great to have you fly with us,  Peter

Check out www.bigredbee.com. They have a transmitter and GPS receiver
which weighs about 60 gms. Lighter batteries are available which would
save 10 grams or so. This unit has been developed for rocket tracking. An
Amateur Radio operators license is required but these are pretty easy to
get these days as Morse code is no longer required. The system has the
capability of showing model location and altitude while in the air.
Tracking distance after landing would be more limited as with all
trackers.
This system is based on the Automatic Position and Reporting System
(APRS) developed for Amateur Radio. A description of this system and its
capabilities can be found at www.winaprs.org. Two books on the APRS can
be purchased from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). There web site
is www.arrl.org. Go to the catalog section and do a Product Search on
'APRS' and the book listing will come up.
Hope this helps,

2007 Southwest FAI Challenge
October 27 & 28, 2007

El Dorado Dry Lake, Boulder City Nevada

Perfect weather is the storyline for the Southwest FAI Challenge again. Just like last year, we were rewarded with two beautiful days with only the slightest breeze and temperatures in the mid 80’s. The thermal conditions were very stable with a lot of solid flights, but no boomers and just enough “down” air to keep the flyers, especially the glider guys on their toes. Alex Andriukov who made his first trip over to the lakebed compared the conditions to the frozen lake in Norway, albiet 50 degrees warmer.

F1A had six in the flyoff with Rene Limberger posting a solid 420 to best Mike Thompson, Andrew Barron and Brian Van Nest who also made it to the 7-minute round. Alex A. collected some first place Americas Cup points in F1B by topping Martin Schroedter, George Batiuk, Aimee Schroedter & Richard Wood.   Look out guys, that’s two flyoffs in a row for Aimee! Nice to see Aimee have success. That last F1B flyoff into the sunset against the backdrop of the mountains is always a special treat at Boulder City. Jeff Ellington, an up and coming F1C flyer, put in his seven rounds and test flew his new flapper (not folder). Tony Robertson, a regular at this meet took F1P over Junior World Champ, Cody Secor without a flyoff.

This year on Sunday morning we flew the Espresso flyoff in separate 10-minute windows for each event. It was a little hectic to collect enough timers to keep the program on schedule for the 8:30 Round 1 start, but it gave every entrant in the mini events a chance to participate in a genuine flyoff format. We conduct this flyoff as a separate event at Boulder City, but we hold the scores in reserve to use as a tie breaker should the “regular” flyoffs go more than two additional rounds at the conclusion of the regular rounds. In two years of using this format, we have yet to need this reserve flight. This year each of the mini’s that required a flyoff was completed in one round with only Mike Thompson in F1H and Brain Van Nest in F1G (yes, F1G) posting 180 second maxes to win. Tony Robertson flew a perfect 5 rounds in F1J and Bob Beecroft wrestled with a new Oldenkamp designed & built model to be both first and last in F1Q. Two local Henderson residents, Robert Hodes and Gerald Antonucci showed us all how to fly P-30 with Robert beating Gerald by 1 second on the 3 minute flight.

This meet is mostly attended by California modelers, as are most in this region. Would you believe the second most represented state was Connecticut? In addition to Andrew Barron who has become a regular participant at this meet, we were happy to see his son Timothy in tow (and towing for a spot on the Junior Team!) as well as mentor supreme, Art Ellis with two more aspiring Junior Team program participants and their Mom’s. Oliver Cai who missed the F1A flyoff by 6 seconds and Miles Johnson who had a bit of a tough day, but finished with two great maxes. A special treat as well was having good guy and good friend Henning Nyhegn in attendance.

As always, thanks to the “regulars” and to Larry Miller the only other Orbiteer in attendance. We’ll see you all next year.
