George,
Thanks very much for the updated version of "My First Encounter with
Bob White"! It will be a worthy addition to the Sympo. Good luck with
your story about Champion Model Products.

Hello Harry,

I certainly don't mind at all your using my little article on White
any way you wish. But I wrote that quickly one morning and sent it off
to Roger. When I read it later I saw that was badly in need of some
editing.

This I have done now, so I am including the edited version here as an
attachment.

I received a similar request from Sergio Montes, who puts out the Free
Flight Quarterly for the Austrailian Modellers (Brit. spelling). We
e-mailed back and forth a few times. Before I knew it, I had agreed to
write for him the story of Champion Model Products. There is a lot to
that story, so it is going to take me quite a while. The bottom line is
that it was a fun hobby-business with the emphasis on "hobby".

Again, glad to help.

George

KeilKraft 'Senator' Postal Competition 2006/7
=============================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I recently distributed to contestants, donors, etc. the results, report
and photos of the initial 2005 KK Senator Postal contest, which had
entrants from many countries and carried awards totalling approx $370.

I am now emailing details of the second event, which commences February
1st. and closes January 31st 2007; this timespan allows summer
participation from flyers in both hemispheres. This contest already has
donations and pledges equivalent to the total awards for 2005 and I
expect greater numbers of models recording scores this year. To
encourage further participation, there is also a team challenge - for
club members or maybe individuals who team up, at long distance, with
others in similar position.

The 'Senator' is a simple, strong and viceless rubber design that
performs beyond its original expectations. Vintage-legal in UK and
elswhere, it also serves well in US Category 3 events such as Nostalgia
Rubber, Moffet and even Mulvihill.

For anyone interested in the details of the forthcoming event - and/or
the results of the 2005 - please contact me OFFLIST at

Towline stretch
===============
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Roger, please publish in SEN.
Thanks,
Jim Farmer

Not very long ago as I began collecting all the equipment and support gear
needed for competing with modern F1As, I discovered that it is basically
impossible to just buy a towline. I'm exaggerating, but you probably know
what I mean. What I found was that just about everyone had their own
opinion about what type of towline is best, what amount of towline stretch
is best, which type stretches the least, which type handles the best, which
type holds up best, how to make up the towlines, etc., etc. I have my own
opinions by now about most of these issues, but at the time I needed facts
on which to base decisions, and towline stretch was something I could
measure. So, I made up several towlines from a few of the commonly used
materials, went out to the sidewalk in front of my house, and ran some very
simple pull tests using a spring fish scale. The results are listed below.
I tested both full towlines, and shorter lengths of the heavier leader
materials. I don't know if this kind of information has been published
before, but I thought it might be helpful particularly for anyone
considering getting started or restarted in F1A. The data is as-collected,
so please excuse the mixture of english and metric units.

Load (kg.) Stretch (in.) Stretch (%) % stretch per kg.

Handling end of towline, 23ft.:

170# spectra core kite bridle line (braided dacron over spectra)
5 1 .36 .072
10 2 .72 .072
20 4 1.45 .072
200# "Planer Board" line (braided dacron)
5 2 .36 .072
10 5.5 1.99 .20
15 11 3.98 .26
braided nylon mason's line
5 15 5.43 1.08
10 33 11.95 1.19

Full (or almost full) towlines:

23 ft. 170# kite bridle line + 141 ft. of 150# braided spectra
5 6 .30 .061
10 12 .61 .061
15 18 .915 .061
164 ft. 1mm Russian Rod (pre-stretched line with 35# pull)
5 11 .55 .11
10 29 1.47 .15
15 50 2.54 .17
136 ft. braided kevlar (Jim Bradley)
5 10.5 .64 .13
10 17.5 1.07 .11
15 26 1.59 .11

The last column (%stretch/kg) gives a back-to-back normalized comparison of
stiffness, or elasticity, however you want to look at it. I expected the
spectra to be on the stiff side, but was a little surprised to see that the
Russian Rod stretched roughly twice as much as spectra. As you might
imagine it's a little tricky to take measurements of the RR because it has a
visco-elastic property to it much like other monofilaments. You can
pre-stretch, as I did, to try to remove as much of the visco-elasticity as
possible from the test. The problem is that once you let go of the
pre-load, the line immediately starts shrinking back to it's original
length. My procedure with the RR was to hold the 35lb. pre-stretch until
the length stabilized, release the pre-load for 2-5 seconds until the end of
the line retracted slightly to a predetermined starting position marked on
the sidewalk, and then do the pull tests. I suppose you could also start
the measured pull tests from a stabilized pre-stretched position, i.e.
without relaxing the preload at all, but I didn't try that and wasn't sure
how relevant that would be to F1A towing. The website for W Hobby where I
purchased the RR advertises 1% stretch at 5kg, considerably more than what I
measured.

I use the first towline listed, with the dacron/spectra leader + braided
spectra. I like the kite bridle line for the handling section of a towline
because it is fairly stiff for a non-monofilament (relative to the Planer
Board line for example) and less prone to tangle than some other types, I
tell myself. Lee Hines uses the Planer Board line and could speak to this.
The mason's line was included really only for giving perspective to the
other lines, although I suppose it could work in a towline. I did not have
any of the heavy yellow monofilament that Jim Parker and some others use for
the leader. According to Jim it is significantly softer than the materials
I tested. I liked the feel of it when I borrowed his towline, but
monofilaments don't cooperate with my Israeli towreel. Anyway, these dacron
string burns on my fingers should start healing up any day now. Another
leader line that I have but didn't test was "pulse line", which I'm almost
certain is also braided dacron over spectra core. I know Ken Bauer uses it,
and it's available from www.westmarine.com in several sizes including 1/16"
(orange) and 5/32" (purple). I have a towline made up of the 5/32 and
looking forward to trying it.

I would be interested to know if others have come up with similar results,
or about data on other towline materials. Sources for the towline materials
that I tested are listed below.

Fw: Request for Info about Bob White

Hello Roger,
Do you think you could put the request below in the SCAT News? I
would like to get the word out to as many readers as possible.

Thanks very much,

Subject: 2006 NFFS Symposium

Roger,
Free flight modelers are saddened over the loss of Bob White in
November. He was a great competitor and a good person, and had friends
all over the world. I am thinking about dedicating the 2006 NFFS
Symposium in his honor. Could you make a request in the SCAT News for
anyone who would like to write about him? George Schroedter wrote "My
First Encounter with Bob White" in the Dec. 13th issue. That could be
re-printed in the Sympo and would be a good example of what I am looking
for. Here are three different subjects that would be appropriate in
honoring Bob White:
1. Biography - a history of his life, career, and modeling
accomplishments. For example, how many times was he on the U.S. FAI team
and when? How did he place each time? How many of his designs were
published? What other events did he excel at besides F1B? The author
will have to be someone who new him well and is willing to do some
research. The biography can also be a compilation of several
contributors, so anyone is welcome to help in this effort.
2. Eulogy - a brief remembrance and a fond farewell to someone who was
so respected and admired.
3. Personal stories - George Schroedter's contribution was a good start.
There must be many other modelers who would like to share a story or an
anecdote about what he was like.

Thanks,

LiPo Lore
==========
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Tapio,

LiPo batteries have much reduced capacity in the cold... If you were flying
on a frozen lake, I'd assume you were at or below 0C. At that temperature,
I'd expect LiPos to have 1/2 or less of their rated capacity. And even if
they were well-matched at room temperature, I don't think you can expect
their capacities to stay matched at low temps. Basically, you drained the
batteries to the point where one was killed.

My suggestion is to downrate the capacity at least 50% at 0C or below. If at
all possible, when flying in the cold, I'd suggest warming the packs up and
topping them up on the charger between flights... You may want to have two
sets of packs that you can swap out flight-to-flight. You may also consider
using a larger battery with more capacity when it's cold.

P.S. I fly mostly electric RC nowadays, mostly with LiPos. I've luckily not
learned this the hard way... And I'm happy your experience wasn't worse.
