America's Cup Update
The NATS is History....
=======================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Well, the 2005 NATS is in the books.
First, I want to thank ALL the volunteers for their work. Everyone sez it, but
I now know from personel experince that a NATS does not run by what the CD
does. It runs by what all the volunteers do.
Number one on the list is Phil Sullivan. He took care of all the entries and
did much of the AMA interface. He has set up a computer syustem that, with
just a few small tweaks is very good. We were able to get the results into
the machine and printed out in 2 hours or less. He is the guy that made my
job sooooo much easier.
Next we have Charlie Sotich, Mary Schulttler (sp?), and Bob L. (sori, can't eve
n guess at how to spell his last name!!). They ran the scoring table, made sure
all the trophies were ready, and did the presentations. They are indespensible
and are true professionals in doing what they do.
Bill Jackson. What can ya say? He has his own way of doing his job and made su
re that processing went smoothly. The line was never longer that a few modeller
s and I think everything there went great.
Of course, there was all the rest that took time out to help. We had over 40 pe
ople that did the deal and they all deserve everything as far as accolades that
can go to them...
Finally there is my kid, John. He was somewhat officially put in as the Assista
nt Contest Direstor but I stuck him right into the fire by having hime run F1A,
F1B, and helping with F1C. As FAI flyers, we know what it can be, as yes, we a
re not all angels when it comes to contest day and John handled it with maturit
y well beyond his 19 years. There were a few minor glitches (all related to loc
ation, as the winds were light and variable and made it hard to get a real good
read on where to go on the site) but he made it through and I think everything
worked out just fine. Very proud of him!!!
Great to see the West Coast contingincy. Had some great times talking with Tim
and George Batiuk, Ken Bauer and son, Rocco Ferrario, as well as Lee HInes. Als
o, had alotta fun talking with an old time hero, Fast Richard Mathias. He found
out that you do have to start the timer on the F1C model or else bad things ha
ppen....
We had over 280 people entered and most flew. As stated, conditions porobably c
ouldn't have been better, with low winds most of the week. We had some wind on
Thursday that made flying a bit tricky (John as well as Norm Poti, and Gil Morr
is all had flights go outta sight even tho they were all high in the sky and ea
sily would have made the flyoff flight) but it worked out. Plus, light rains Fr
iday slowed things down a bit but then turned into calm, very fun flying condit
ions.
Poor Jim Haught. Put one in the corn and one high up in a tree. Got them all ba
ck tho (even tho I have his model in our box and not sure if I am going to give
it back!).
So, thanks again to all and hope you all had a good time. We have a few things
to work on to clarify a few rules for next year, but all in all things went pre
tty well. Everyone was very supportive of the rookie CD and I appreciate that t
remendously.
Oh yeah...Ken Bauer- you tied for first for High point in glider!! So, you will
be getting a plaque that you didn't expect. Jim Lewis was the co-winner...
I never realised all the different classes and rules for each one. Well, I gues
s I did, but when you have a big box full of trophies you then have an idea of
what we have turned the simple free flight events into. Maybe we need to look i
nto reducing the numbers somehow, but I don't know what would change.
We did have a cool crash (even tho it could have been real dangerous). A C Gas
model was launched either with the stab in the DT position or it instantly went
into DT. The model began to loop and the modeler hit the wing. The wing fell o
ff and then the fuse and stab went into ballistic missle mode. The stab hit a p
ole and ripped off the stab. The fuse continued cruise missle style into Vander
beek's trailer. I guess it was pretty awesome!!
The NATS is a million stories and hopefully everyone has a few happy ones. Lots
a maxes, lotsa friends, lotsa new friends, and lotsa memories. Someone said to
me that peole will forget most everything about the event but will remember the
weather. If that is true, then we did succeed! Oh yeah, Thanks Bill Shaillor
and Greg Simon for the great beans and dogs and beers. Good friends, good food,
cold beer......Don;t get no better...
So, I can now fly (if I remember how to) and maybe have some fun!!!!
John Lorbiecki
F1A-B-C at the Nationals
========================

The National's results can be found on:
http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/natsnews.asp
The weather was exceptionally calm and hot, and almost all flights
stayed on the field.
F1A was held on Monday and four maxed out. Art Ellis dropped
the 5-minute max and Mike McKeever dropped the 7-minute
max. The 9-minute max, delayed to 7 PM, was won by Steve
Spence flying a mechanical model with 291. Andrew Barron, who
an hour earlier put up a perfect bunt and flight, had a line break at
a knot at a 45 degree pitch, did 207, placing him second.
F1C was held on Tuesday. Five maxed out - David Johannes
the son of the late Bob, Mat Gwain, Norm Poti and Don Chesson
and Craig Gunder. A 7-minute flyoff was wisely delayed
until 6 PM, and was won by Dave Johannes with a 386 flight,
followed by Don with 384, Norm with 364, Graig with 363. Mat
stalled to a 130 after a bad transition.
David, Norm and Craig landed beyond a corn field to the east,
Craig bounced off a tree and unlucky for Norm, his model collided
with a barn's tin roof and broke the tail boom.
F1B was held on Wednesday. The later rounds became more
turbulent, coupled with strong thermals and downers. The senior
Taylor Gunder - the only one clean by the 6th round - dropped,
placing third. Ed Wiley, who submaxed the first 5-minute round
persevered to place first with a 1260 using the supermax magic.
Second place went to the senior Ryan Jones.
The F1A-B-C contests were ably run by John Lorbieki Jr.
F1Q on Wednesday had a single flyer - Vic Nippert. (Chuck
Groth who flew AMA A+B electric felt bad and left on Tuesday).
Vic was using an outrunner called Potensky 150 (Hobby Lobby)
with a 3-cell LiPo battery. The model easily reached 300 feet
in 20 seconds.

Congratulations to the AMA for the new BOP event. That's "Bounce Off
Plastic" with wet floats of course. What happened to the ROW event I
went there to fly. ne guy actually ROW'd. Congratulations to Bob Stalick
who's Hydrostar made it in the 15 feet for all 3 flights. I don't think
anyone else did. Thank you AMA for making it so challanging with a 15ft.
tank. I was told it was legal because "there are no rules other than it
be 6in. deep, it could have been 2ft. in diameter by an official. ISN'T
THAT RIDICULOUS!!! The whole THING was ridiculous!! Who has a gassie
that can take off the water in 15 ft.? I know it was well attended and
everyone but me had a good time. Yes I am a "spoil sport" because I
refused to fly BOP. I expected a reasonable place to fly ROW. Shame on
me. Ed Mate

Following the note in the previous issue we decided that
seeing we publish cat Glider
it would be crass if we did not publisg HLG.
Even if said honorable scribe was a little
further down the list. Congrats to Ken Bauer for 2 second places
and for his innovative HLG model. Ken has already
flown a discus launch HLG with
but it was not convenient to transport all the way tot he Nats so he bought
his conventional size HLG - with electronic timer and bunt mechanism - which
got him second spot!
