Motorcycle Safety
=================

The motorcycles we use, being 'off-highway vehicles'
do not have rear view mirrors.
When we are on a street or highway, we are likely
to be passed by an automobile or truck.
The example for is, for many of us, the interior roads
at Muncie, and roads outside the Muncie property,
- the road to Reece airport, - Memorial Drive, - or any
of those roads while chasing a 7 minute fly-off flight..
For Lost Hills, it is the highway, to and from the Bike Storage
units at the Holloway Plant.
Even the roads on site at Lost Hills.
On your bike, chasing - with your eyes in the sky, or even on the
way to the Porta John, you have no idea what's behind you,
You can't see it. You can't hear it either !
The guy that's passing you thinks you see or hear him.
He doesn't honk his horn...
He's going at least 20 miles per hour at Muncie.
Probably at least 60 on Holloway Highway.
He will pass you without slowing..
So, while on your bike, look before you turn.
Keep track of what's behind you as you ride anywhere..
If you're passing a biker with your car, give him a honk.
Make sure, by his signal or body english,
that he knows you're there.
With all this in mind, last time I was at Muncie,
I took a ride over to Reese Airport to see about
getting a flight to spot my model in the beans,.
I thought, I'll ride in the middle of the road so
that anyone wanting to pass would have to honk.
This is a very narrow black top road.
a shoulder about 2 ft wide, a ditch, then corn.
I'm going a good speed, straight ahead.
,,,,trying to keep my hat on...
Out of the corner of my eye ( as they say ) I see
a fender - wheel - rusty hood....
This horses ass is going to pass me !
Sure enough, with one wheel on that 2 ft shoulder,
he grinds by.
I see his face, the MF's got a little mustache !
You almost lost Brokenspar.
Get rear view mirrors for your motorcycle !
Lots of model stuff.

Roger,
Would you please post the following?
Sue Keck has asked me to assist her and her son Fred in liquidating
Ed's rather large inventory of models, engines and equipment.
I will be stopping at the Keck home on Labor Day, on the way home from
the Canada Cup. If anyone who knows of something of Ed's that they would
like to have please e-mail me about it. I will make a list and find what
I can. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Eventually we will get an inventory
made, but due to the distances involved, time constraints, and the
amount of things there, it will take a while. Many of the items are
still in the packing boxes from their move to new quarters.
Thank you, Bob Gutai

Latest Sympo. This may interest SEN readers. Response to Hermie's letter
at the end of this letter. Of course it IS maybe too long.
Ed Mate
I was hoping I would hear from you Hermie. Actually the tips came
about when I wanted to break away from The Denny Davis, Ray Mathews, Lew
Mahiew and Claude McCullough influences and strike out on my own. Claude
mostly since at the time I was very much under his influence because of
winning the Nats with his "Brigand" in Minnesota in 1947. Also I was
about to go into Architecture at U of I Navy Pier in 1949 and become the
next Frank Lloyd Wright. I just had to break away and be on my own. So
prodding around I got to Hoerner and bingo I could do that and be Buck
Rogers with a little twist. There it was eureka, "Meteor tips"! I had
already previously decided the ship would be called the "Meteor". It was
very original I thought at the time. I did not know about the Glouster
Meteor or probably it would have been something else.
Funny you should mention Saarinen who was next after Wright in my
admiration because in 1970 I did design a building for THE McCormick
family that was to be the new Roanoke building in Chicago at Madison and
LaSalle. The building was influenced by the "meteor tips". I did it at
home over the weekend. It was very evident when you looked at the
rendering and the balsa modelof the building. It was 30 stories. Ed
McCormick the Colonels grandson who was over 70 was the spokesman for
the family. I was Chief of Design for A. Epstien and Sons at the time.
Ed M saw it and said it was way too radical. He had been involved with
some sterile Mies Vanderoe stuff and wanted to see something more
simple. Sid Epstien was with me and said , "Sure Ed no problem".
I came up with 4 simpler (bland) solutions for the building. A week
later we were going back to McCormick's office. I asked Sid if I should
take the original design. He said not to bother with it. I took it
anyway. Lucky I did. After my presentation of the new ones, McCormick
said he could not get the original out of his mind. In fact he had
dreamed about it. So I pulled it out and we Discussed it. He asked what
it would cost to build. Sid wrung his hands and told him that to really
know it would take a very expensive set of
"scope drawings". Ed M said do it. It cost him over a hundred grand.
Later our V.P. of Architecture said Ed Mate designed it and sold it.
But it was not to be. The billionaire family and its money was in
England. They decided it was a bad time to convert their pounds to our
dollars. That was the end of it. In consolation I have the original
scope drawings that we threw in the garbage. They thought. Know anyone
with about 60 million that wants to build it? It should take about a
million or so to get the drawings in Chicago permit shape. I never told
this to anyone. Just had to get it off my chest. By the way 10 years
later I had a similar exercise with another company and project. A 40
story building for THE Kennedy's. It was externally simpler but
internally MUCH more complicated. The lower floors looked out UNDER the
Chicago River. "HOW BOUT THAT" as Pete Sotich would say. Not to be. They
ran Teddy for President with the money for my building.
Hey I just came from an IMAC meeting. We are assembling a photo
history of the IMAC's. We have a good start. We have from 1911 to about
1947 so far. If you and Del have early pics of yourselves or anyone else
we will get them in. Let me know. Sept 24th hmmmmm let me see. IMAC
meeting 10th, Aeronuts 17, SAM Champs I go to 11-18, that's all I know
of right now. Will check some more. Still have engine collection. Still
Scheman, my business. Just got back from the Nats at Muncie. Did nothing
much winning wise. Had a good time tho. Thanks for your kind words in
Sympo. I am trying to write for 2005 Sympo.

Ed,
Thanks for the kind words in SEN. Didn't think anyone ever read
that stuff.
Had wanted to get your permission as well as additional info pix &
cartoons
re your advanced tips. Got way behind schedule & only Walt's
generousity
allowed any article at all.
Never did figure out how you came up with them in the first place.
Any influence from Hoerner, Saarinen or Piccaso?
Whatcha up to now?
Still scheman?
Still have the engine collection?
Plan to be in Arlington Hts Sept 24 for 50th Taft HS reunion. Doubt
if I
can make Aeronut mtg or Racine Indoor. Anything else happening in
that
timeframe?
Thanks again,
H
Thanks for the support.

My trip to France was and absolute blast. Doing well in the competition
made it that much sweeter, but if I didn't have the support of the free
flight community the trip would not have been possible. I want to thank
all of those people that made donations toward the team and would
especially like to thank Faust Parker and CC Johnson for their generous
donation of models. Thanks again and I hope to see everyone soon on a
contest field.
Sincerely,
Jon Schelp

A couple of years ago I got two sets of F1B wing ribs cut by Balsa
Machining Services. They provided a really fast service, all wood was of
good quality. At the time they used TurboCad as a CAD package.

I would certainly use them again.

I remember flying with Jerry back in the 70's. His skill building
probably came from the fact that he owned a wood working factory. I was
just a kid then, but his models always looked outstanding. For that
time he was ahead of the times.

All this talk of Jerry brought back memories. Jerry was from Chicago and would
fly at Bong. I remember, as a kid flying some of my own design TLGs, watching
him fly. Then, one time, he asked me to launch and help him chase (I was, back
then, a lean mean, chasing machine!). We launched his model, he towed, released,
and then we jumped into his bright red Cadillac (I think) convertible, white
interior, top down chase car and went bounding down the gravel runways.
Always thought that his design was very specific in what conditions it could be
flown in, with the long center sections and small tips. But, as stated, it is
a classic.....
