SCAT Article, Classic Towline Event Comments

Hello SCAT readers
I just wanted to offer a few comments about the new classic towline events,
A/1 and A/2.
I have flown these events twice this year, and found the 15 second tow
period not too much of a problem for the flyer, but more of a challenge for
the timer. I would recommend going to a 30 second tow, and making it a
subjective thing like if the guy runs more than 100 yards, or is out there
fishing for a thermal, the timer calls it an attempt. The only time the 15
second rule comes into being a problem is if the model does not tow
straight and vears causing correction, which will most likely go over the
15 second allotment.
Early in the season I flew a 1960s model that I built last year, and got 3
maxes on it. But I built a new A1 and A2 for the NATS, finished the Friday
before, and won A1 and got second in A2. Not too bad for a guy who has not
been to the NATS since 1960. It was a blast.
Now to throw a little twist into it, I began thinking that this would be a
great event if we would just throw out the builder of the model rule. It
is a great beginning event for the young people and the adults who have
wanted to try towline gliders without outlaying the money that a high tech
F1A or F1H would cost. So maybe guys should consider this as the event
becomes more formalized for next years competition?
The more participation that we can promote, the more persons who will
advance in their skills.... in my opinion.
As owner of the: www.glideTEK.com website selling free flight models,
I plan to introduce some great classic towline model kits, and may even
bring in some ARFs for the F1A and F1H events utilizing straight tow for
the entrance flyers. Let me know if you have any interest?

Sierra Cup October 15-17, 2004.
Entries are coming in a little slow with the Internet entry this year,
remember, foreign entries can pay on Thursday but tell me you're coming.
There is a late fee should a flyer from the US enter after October 4. The
late fee is $30. Here's another E-mail entry form. Know someone that needs
a non-internet entry, let me know.
Entry fee is $45 for any one event, $60 for any two events and includes the
banquet. Juniors are $25 per event and $35 for two. I want flyers to come to
the banquet as it is not often we have the opportunity to mix with some of the
best flyers in the world but you we can work something out if you absolutely
don't like banquets.

I want to inform that Bulletin 1 for the Argentina 2005
Free Flight World Championship was sent to every FAI
registered National Aeroclub.
This document is also available at the W. Ch.'s web page
www.argentina2005.com.
Regarding a question posted at past issue of Scat News, I
am sorry to inform that there will be no additional
competition before or after the official competition.
We have assigned the Hotel's Complex for only seven days
and we don't want to risk the two reserve days for other
issue than the Championship we are committed to organize.
For any additional information that anyone could need
please feel free to contact the organization trough the web
page, or directly to my address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Thought I would end the lost baggage saga for any who might find it
entertaining-
Brian and I get on the British Airways plane in Paris for the connection to
take us back to London, and then from London to LA, home. We never received
Brian's model box the whole trip but we are hoping it will be home when we
get there. While seated on the plane Brian looks out the window and says,
"hey, there's Phil's model boxes getting loaded right under us!". Sure
enough, teammate Phil Scheiman's boxes are lost once again, because he and
his family left 6 hours ahead of us, but here is his stuff on our plane!
We joke that when we get to London we'll again find Phil stranded there
looking for his stuff. This time however Phil & family just went straight home,
though making their London connection with only seconds to spare, and left
the bags behind hoping they would catch up someday. At the London baggage
claim, with no Phil, I take Phil's stuff off the carousel and give it to the
BA people with specific instructions that they must go to San Francisco,
hoping that this might speed the process for Phil & Aimee. Later I
found out that they got their stuff a few days after arriving home...
Forgot to mention that the good old BA flight out of Paris was 2 hours late
taking off. This caused us to miss the connection in London and there were
no more flights out that day so we were stuck. BA put us up in a hotel
for the night, but still we lost a whole day on the trip home.
Got home but Brian's box still wasn't there as promised. A few days
went by and still no box. After a week home, and several fruitless calls to BA
baggage claim people who can't tell me anything I start to fear the
worst that a box full of 4 modern F1A gliders might be gone forever. I decide
to file a claim for the entire lost box with all the support equipment that
was inside as well, hoping it might at least get me some attention. I end
up valuing the whole thing at $6600 and send a detailed email to BA.
Probably by coincidence a few hours later I get a call from an LAX delivery van
saying that a baggage delivery was on its way to my house. Hallelujah!
A few hours later it arrives. The black plastic golf case looks so beautiful.
Inside it is a lightweight wooden box that contains the 4 planes. Upon
inspection we discover that the thing has been handled pretty rough because
the plywood box is split and coming apart in several places. The models
inside got shaken up pretty good, but all the wings are ok, one stab has
minor damage, and the rudders are broken off two tailbooms. Overall pretty
easy to fix. Still good to have the stuff. So now the final step is to
file a final claim against BA for all the misery they have caused us.
This last week at home there has been a couple news stories about enraged BA
passengers getting stuck in London due to lack of staff on the ground and
general screw ups. So the moral of the story, at least for now, is to avoid
British Airways at all costs!
I know that lots of people have lost model box stories, but I'm curious
how this one rates. Anybody else lost their stuff for 3 weeks?

I must have had a touch of the sun ! If downwash is greater at the stab,
the decalage should be less, not more ! The LE of the stab has to rise to
attack the air at the same angle. So that is not the reason my Mk 8 has
has extra decalage. The only other difference is it has a pylon and my
smaller model doesn't. But this would also cause a reduction in decalage.
I am mystified, but it may simply be that the smaller model is less able to
be trimmed as high on the step without stalling ?? Any ideas?

Hi BILL ,I was reading your conclution abaut the best F1C PARAMETERS, , and
I remember in 1967 in SAZENA checoeslovakia W CH , THE MODELS USING BY ing
Vladimir ; Hajek, f1c were like you said , long center and small tips
wings ,the only diferent is a short tail moment and a big pylon ,one of
my team friend used, one like this , and in gliding on thermic , was
wanderfull the engine was an MVVS ; DIESEL at 21000 rpm
Maybe the future ,will be repeat the old timer, do you remember the
LUKY LINDE or something like this, by larry conover,he used 3 dihedral per wing
Low wings and small tail boom diameter, x;where used in f1c by SERGEI ABLAMSKY
from Ukrania in 1981 IT is no nothings new under the sun
good luck
manuel blanco (f1c cuban team) now in SPAIN
