F1E Slope Soaring Gliders

F1E is an international free flight class flown from a hill. Even small hills
can be fun and challenging. It is not too late to start planning to
fly a hand launched and magnet controlled free flight glider in the next
F1E Finals. This F1E Team Selection contest will be held Feb. 15, 2005 in
Lost Hills, CA. The first 3 Open category participants and the first 3 Junior
category participants (under the age of 19) will qualify for the US
Team to fly in the 2005 F1E World Championships to be held in Slovakia in
September. The entry fee for Open competitors is $50 payable to AMA (Lisa
Johnson) by Dec. 20, 2004. Junior sprortsmen also must enter but there
is no fee. On the Monday before the Finals in Lost Hills there will be the
now traditional F1E contest as part of the Isaaacson Winter Classic.

The NFFS Symposia 2002, 2003, and 2004 have good articles on F1E. I have
a list of sources for F1E components. At the upcoming "endless October" FAI
contest I will have mini-F1E fuselages for sale for $20. All that is required
is building a 24" wing and a stab to get a feel of the event. Regular
F1E models typically have wings from A-2 size to nearly 1000sqin.

Oh yes! Might you also know the dates of the World Championships in =
Argentina. I've heard a rumor that they will be in May, but that's all.

Hi again Roger,

Last night I sent the following email, which I have now edited slightly. If
you put this in SEN, please use this version. For one thing, I forgot to ID
myself.

Thanks again for all you do for the rest of us. See you in Lost Hills during
October.

Elmer Nelson

Revised email:

Hi Roger,

As a recent builder of an A-1, I'd like to comment on the 15 second time
limit. I'm a somewhat worn out 69 year old, but I can run (not as far as I used
to and not nearly as fast). To get to the point, in perfectly calm conditions,
if I sprint at flank speed and go until my lungs burst, I can get the little
bird almost to the top of the tow line. Or said another way, I really don't
think I can sprint much longer than 15 seconds no matter how hard I try. With a

little breeze, I can sort of kite the bird and take advantage of the conditions.
This I find fun to do. Bottom line, throw away the "on the line time limit"
and let's have a little fun. I'd also throw out the BOM rule for this event and
most other free flight events. With the exception of scale or any event
where craftsmanship is judged, I find it hard to understand those that want to
hang onto a rule that very clearly discourages many that might otherwise
join us.

With regard to crossflow; why not use a badly balanced single bladed prop to
produce the necessary vibration?
Cheers,

A discussion on the Free Flight Forum, at the NFFS website, clearly
indicates a preference for truly unlimited gliders, with no specific
FAI-oriented influence
