The fly offs for the August Tangent Classic FAI Meet were held at Lost Hills on
Oct 3rd thanks to the accommodation of Juan Livotto who graciously squeezed us
in, between the two event days for his contest. Thanks very much Juan.
Weather was perfect for the early morning, to the ground fly offs needed to
settle all the Tangent events so we were finished before the start of the
mini events for the Livotto Invitational. Here are the scores:

Absolutely Mike, I agree with you that the sooner we get
back to 35 gr. maybe we will see some of the other
disillusioned fliers return to the fold.

More on F1B rubber Weight (Peter King)
I thought it might be interesting to get some feed back on how these computer
simulations compare with your own real flight experience. The table shows
the effect of rubber weight on height and performance in two different types of
air conditions. I note times at Lost Hills recently were ca one minute down
on normal, in the 5 min round. I have been working on a program that attempts
to simulate the effect of rather dead air and low level turbulence on
performance. Originally done to try to explain why my best F1G, which does
about 2'
50" in 'still air' but when launched into bad air, regularly does close to 1'
20". The program matches this result and I can also use it to simulate the
effects on F1B, which are not as bad, due to the fact they climb higher and are
less effected by turbulence near the ground.
The results below are in the two types of air conditions. I have noticed
that 30 gm F1B's can easily miss even a 3 min max when the air is bad, whereas
40gm or even 35gm models would usually scrape through. The simulation is based
on good Tan 2. Super Sport would probably give a reduction of ca 11/12% if
you say best Tan 2 gives 4500 ft/bls/lb and best Super Sport say 4000. This
would drop the 30gm model for example, to about 3' 55" in bad air and to ca 5
'
15" in good air. How do these results compare with your experience guys? I
would point out that the simulations are in fact very close to a simple
factoring of the performance by the relationship between the rubber weight. ie
multiply the duration of a 40gm model by 30/40 to get the 30gm model's performa
nce,
etc. In fact I would venture to suggest the 30gm model has in reality even
less performance that this, due to various other factors, although this is
somewhat aleviated by the fact that many 40gm models came in quite a few gms
over weight, compared to the 30gm model. Mine certainly have at least, but
I am not the lightest builder on the planet !!
Good TAN 2
Good Air (Still air but with reasonably bouant conditions, typical of Lost
Hills, early morning?)
40gm Ht 442ft Duration 7' 50"
35gm Ht 360ft Duration 6' 31"
30gm Ht 324ft Duration 5' 54"
Bad Air (Unhelpful air with light sink and some measure of low level
turbulence)
40gm Ht 392ft Duration 5' 55"
35gm Ht 301ft Duration 4' 56"
30gm Ht 266ft Duration 4' 24"

In 905 issue of SEN, Doug wrote about the end of the current Hummer
production. Does it means that the Hummer's production will be
stopped or that there will be a new and improved generation?

I completely agree with what was written by Mr. Shailor on this matter.
It is the same for the reduction of F1C motor run to 5sec, the decision
being taken at the time when a working group was in charge of finding
the reasons of the decline of number of F1C flyers !!!
The concern is still the same: look at the results of this year's EuroCH
in Romania: 80 competitors in F1A, 69 in F1B and only 37 in F1C !!!
For sure something must be done.
