There is a nice piece in the New York Times, August 28 issue page A25, about
Bob Bender flying in Hanger B. He is an old timer flying scale models. He
has been doing this for the last 70 years. Excellent photography.
Have a look.

Gentlemen.
After now seeing the hlg thing that has appeared in the NFFS 2003 symposium,
I have been talking with the current editor of the 2004 edition and am
hoping to meet up with him at the Stonehenge FAI event next month. Anyway,
I want to continue on with where I left off with the article on hlgs and
this time, do something on clgs and get these more into the limelight and
get more people flying them.
As last year around this time, I asked people what they would like to see in
a article - this year I ask the same again. If you were to start thinking
about flying clgs for fun and for comp - what would inspire you if it was
written down and what would you want to read about in it?
Photos, models, building one etc - you name it - I am looking for feedback
please so I can approach the ed next month with a heap of ideas. Yours
would be appreciated to me.
I thank you all once again for everything last year and hope to hear from
you again in respect of catapult gliders.

just returned from Albany Oregon. and had a great time. since I hadn't
been there before I wasn't sure what the flying site would be like. let
me say that I thought it is a great site! the main field is large and
the surrounding fields are even larger.
thanks should go to mike Roberts and Ron mcburnett for putting on the
contest. great job guys. sorry we took so many trophies back to
Sacramento. you'll just have to come down to Sacramento in October to
get some of them back.

A record group of flyers attended this years Tangent Classic FAI Meet just
outside Albany Oregon. Weather on Friday for F1 ABC was changeable through the
day with drift to the northeast at the start, finishing the fly offs with drift
to the south east with the middle of the day all over the place. Most all the
near by fields were accessible on motorcycles so retrieval was not a big
problem. The wind blew steady and reasonably hard on Mini day so the round max
was shortened for round three and beyond to keep the models from going too far
and into farm structures. F1 A was settled in the nine minute fly off with
Mike McKeever taking the win from Dan Protherow thus also taking home the Wayne
Drake perpetual trophy for high time F1 A. The fly off in F1 B was between
local boy, Derek McGuckin and some guy from California who didn't look like a
beginner, Walt Ghio. Walt took a well deserved win in F1 B. The final F1 C
fly off was between Ron McBurnett, Roger Simpson and Mike Roberts. Roger
showed the way with a beautiful flight....obviously he has done this before as
well.
The mini fly off took place at 7am Sunday morning in calm, cool conditions.
Local hero, Ralph Cooney, bested Larry Norvall for the Coupe win saving some
semblance of Northwest honor and Mike McKeever maintained his winning ways
taking the F1 H win over Norm Smith. The F1 J winner was Dave Shirley after
Roberts smacked two models (they flew great yesterday) and Dave Parsons never
returned after loosing his model to a tree many miles away after a beautiful
test flight. We sure appreciate all those that travel great distances to fly
with us. Thanks very much.

Do I understand correctly? One competitor thought ahead, invested in bigger,
better binoculars, and provided them to timers exactly when needed. Is that

hlg timers

Re: Hlg timers.
Things have moved on a little from the burbning fuse although it still
remains an effective, if somewhat drag laden technichnique if its hanging
from a hlg fuselage.
The way to go now is I guess either Tomy timers or through the use of silly
putty. I have used both for the hlgs that i fly and to be honest, both have
their advantages and disadvantages.
The Tomy timer is still an exceptional bit of engineering and is known for
being accurate and you can set the dt to pretty much the second - however,
in the event of muck getting into the mechanism, then it could result in a
fly away.
You also need to cut out a larger section in the fus for this type of timer
and that naturally, weakens the structure.
Then there is the button timer - this is a a type of silly putty that uses
friction to rotate an arm through the putty and then releases a line and dt
operates. This involves the drilling of a small hole through the wood in
the fuselage and this is slotted through it. Areodynamically, its a lot
better and the weakening of the structure is a lot less.
My final choice of weapon to get a model down is a form of silly putty dt
from len surtees - called a COOL TUBE. Its a putty timer that can be put
onto the top of the fus or incorporated in it if you build this up. Again,
same principle - the pulling of a band on the arm causes this to rotate and
away it goes. Contact Len Surtees @
lensurtees@ hotmail.com
So far have never had a failiure on this method and works for me.

Re: Sirtrack
I had a quick look at the website indicated by Dave Ackery.
Seems very close to our requirements, perhaps Dave could get
in touch with these people and define what could be the ideal
tracker, one important requirement being to withstand F1C
vibration for crystal life and good grip of battery in battery
holder.
