Dear Scatters,
Sad to report to you that the home of Al & Patty Ulm burned down.
Don Zink just let me know, so I felt I should pass the news on.
They are staying at son Jeff's. I tried to call[619 443 7540]but all
circuits are naturally too busy still to ring thru.
Take care,
Lee

New Use for Rubber Strip?

There is a piece in the October 25 issue of the New York Times concerning the
Cadillac Division of General Motors. Seems they want to return to the days
when there was a new car smell. So, what they do, they contact an auto
supplier called Collins & Aikman. This company has a division that specializes
in
"Aroma Quality Management." I quote, "During a recent visit to one of the
company's labs, Siying Chen, a chemist whose skill would not have been needed i
n
the industry a decade ago, opened a clear jar containing rubber strip and waved

her hand to sweep up the bouquet of what smelled like fine leather."

Here I think is a problem. If the rubber strip works well for Cadillac, out
goes our source for rubber. Ah well....

Wawayanda Results

Free Flight Friends,
Here are the results of the Sky-Scraper Annual, on Barron Field
in Wawayanda, NY, Oct 18-19, 2003, in FAI, NFFS, and AMA events. First
some highlights. We had 70 participants altogether (including also FAC
and SAM). The weather was good most of the weekend. Sunday morning we
flew in a bouyant rain, from the center of the sod as the drift was
light and variable in its direction.

Especially noteworthy was the Junior flying in FAI. Junior fliers
won the first place awards in 3 of the 6 FAI events, all maxing out with
stellar levels of performance. Moreover, among those finishing in the top
5 in these events, Juniors accounted for 10 out of 20. Clearly, FAI free-
flight is critical to Junior flying in the North East, as it is for
many their next step past HLG, Catapult, P-30, and Mulvihill.

Congratulations to Junior U.S. Team member Sara Radziunas, who had her
first Max Out to win F1B, just ahead of Ron Felix. Junior Nate Coste flew
well for third in F1B.

Congratulations also to Junior Amanda Barr who continued her string of
Max-Outs (beginning in August). This weekend in Wawayanda she maxed-out
to win both F1J/P and ABC Gas.

In F1A Peter Barron maxed out and got the 5 minute max to win the
flyoff against Aram Schlosberg (2nd). Junior Ben Thomson also maxed out
for 3rd. Juniors Jonah Coste and Josh Revkin flew well for 4rd and 5th
place finishes. Peter's performance here, coupled with his fine showings
at several Muncie contests (2 firsts and 2 seconds) this summer, puts him
in a position where he has a shot at a high Americas Cup finish for F1A in
2003. He will need to do well at one more non-Muncie event.

We had 16 contestants in F1A, clearly the most active event on the
field.

Joe Wagner, Tom Ioeger, and Rich Ivers flew well to win F1C, F1G, and
F1H, respectively.

The AMA and Nostagia events had some good performances, especially
by Al Volmer, Ed and Larry Pelatowski, Don Rousseau, Brad Bane,
Clarke Darling, Krine Laffler, Mike Cook, and Amanda Barr.

The contest management was ably overseen by ever-vigilant Dave Acton,
who also found time to take second in Dawn Unlimited.

Thanks to all of you who came and enjoyed the flying.

Andrew

So, once again Ben Coussens is at the very top of a competetion full of
open fliers, in two classes no less and as I undestand it due to the
scoring for the junior team selection he will not be part of the
team???????
