I'm writing this from an internet cafe in Cluj-Napoca in Romania. Today we
had the F1E World Championships and after 5 five-minute max rounds there were
8 in the fly-off and Bob Sifleet won! The first 3 in the Senior Competition are
:
1st Robert Sifleet, USA
2nd Jaromir Orel, Czech Republic
3rd Andreas Tschanz, Switzerland

I did OK, had 3 five-minute maxes but in the fierce wind in the
last round was blown to the back side of beyond

43rd FAI Invitational Results August 23-24, 2003 Muncie, Indiana
====================================================================

The Chicago Aeronuts sponsored FAI Invitational contest in Muncie Indiana was
held over the weekend of Aug 23-24. We were the beneficiaries of excellent
weather considering that the Midwest experienced hot, humid and windy
conditions just before and after the weekend. Because a cool front was moving
through
on Friday bringing winds of 10-15 mph not many were practicing except some
dihard F1B contestants. On Saturday, the drift was steady
out of the NE at about
5-10 mph, temperature was moderate and humidity was thankfully low. Because
the stronger thermals were carrying models off the field, the max was reduced
from 180 to 150 for the final three rounds. The only flyoff was in F1C where
all three contestants had maxed out the rounds. Norm Poti was the only one to
drop the 5-minute flyoff. His engine unexplicably quit at about three
seconds, but the model still did an amazing 4:21 at 7 pm. His prize was to
orgainize the flyoff between Servaites and Gutai at 7 am the next morning. It
was
dead calm at the surface, but the correct launch site was selected to gain
maximum field for drift and also indicate to the rest of us
where to set up for the
remainder of the contest on Sunday. I heard that Bob won because his alien
powers caused Bucky's model to hit a tree.

The performance of two Jr team aspirants in F1A needs to be recognized. If I
read the scores correctly on the NFFS website, Peter Barron (who won) has
raised his team selection score to a tie with Ben Coussens. Michael Avallone
(who came in a close second to Peter) has cemeted his placement on the team and
is ahead of Peter. Perhaps the Jr Team Selection committee for the next
team might consider some bonus points for kids that actually place highly in
AmCup contests as part of their system instead of only considering their time
performance normalized to a max-out.

Those of us who welcomed the good weather on Saturday, felt doubly blessed on
Sunday when it was even better: Light and Variable out of the SE, with
periods of absolute calm.
The mini events started at 8 am with 16 maxes in the three events for 25
contestants. As the morning went on, the F1J flyers continued
their usual assult
on the 2-minute max until 6 of the 8 still had clean scores after five rounds.

They agreed to a 5-minute max flyoff with a 5-second engine run as a good
way to settle the contest without going into the early evening. As it turned
out, only Bob Gutai made the max. Amanda Barr, another Jr team aspirant,
launched when he did and place 4th using what seemed to be a
locked-up model (at
least it didn't bunt). Her max-out at this contest places her in serious
contention for a place on the Jr team. In F1G, the first flyoff
between Fred Blom and yours truly was almost a comedy.
We also had set a five-minute max. Near
the end of the 10-minute window, we both launched in air that was definitely
not good to each have the same score: 101 seconds! So much for tactics. The
second flyoff again saw an almost simultaneous launch, but Fred hit better air
than I did to win.

The turnout for this weekend was helped a bit by the Jr team aspirants, but
suffered from being bracketed on a weekend between the Geneseo and Canada Cup
contests. The high price of automobile fuel didn't help either. Richard
Wood.....where were you?

Looking 4 Pitch gauge and wings

Hello Roger,

I'm looking for a pitch gauge to check out some F1J props, and have been
told that the old Terry Prather version is the way to go. Anyone out there
have one they would be willing to sell?

I'm also in need of a couple sets of 350-square-inch F1J wings (four-panel
Odyssey or similar) to replace some rather poorly built (by me) wings that
just won't cut it. Anyone have some they're not using?

In a message dated 9/4/03 9:44:18 PM Pacific Daylight Time,
Aram writes on,

cover. It takes a sharp pair of nail scissors to slowly
pry open the protective cover without damaging the
internals.

Just give some Tan X to an indoor flyer having a stripper. Any size from
.015" X .042" on up is easily stripped.

Just a friendly reminder in respect of the Heave Ho postal event for hlgs -
I know that Len surtees is hard at it and just had an email from Lee Hines
with a set of incredible scores, together with an incredible set as well
fromm Charlie Primbs - timed by Tom Smith.
Its gonna be tight at the top this year - rules are as below - so come on
get them built and flying and lets keep those hlgs airbourne.

Best wishes

Kev

Puppy : Ape or Slug ?

Mr SCAT,

Now that F1Ps have finally been flown at a serious
contest (Junior European Champs) is there a conclusion
as to whether they are :-

a) faster than a scalded ape

or,

b) slower than a wounded slug

EoB

[EoB

I cannot comment from the Euro Jnr Chamsp except to note
thgat the turnout in F1JP was diappointing.

But I have a number of other observations ....

I have seen Cody Secor's AstroPuppy [ applogies to TH but I could not
resist] and it is in the scalded ape category .. and it is a simple
airplane albiet with a strong motor. My understanding is that
Cody flew it in F1J at the US Nats and only just missed the
5 min flyoff [from 7 seconds rather than 10] and probably
would have made it if he had a little more contest experience.
I guess coach Dave Rounsaville will just have to dye his hair so the
officals think he is a junior and he can give Cody a little flight
line wisdom!

The second third hand observation is that I understand that
the top 2 young power
flyers in the world - Gunder and Lorbiecki, are considering
F1Ps for next year's Junior World Champs , .. and Austin for one
was very negative about F1P when it was announced.

Finally and I've seen Dick Wood fly his earlier in the year
and it performed respectably if not scalded.

Too big, too heavy, too expensive!!!

I suggest you try Vin Morgan's transmitters (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.),
plus his considerably more effective dedicated receiver... cheaper,
smaller, lighter!!!

Aram was asking about the round rubber the eastern Europeans use in
place of rubber bands.

Go to your local fishing shop and ask about "Carp elastic". My local
shop has a whole rack of the stuff in various diameters and from
various manufacturers. It is colour coded by diameter, though there
seems to be no standard here: different suppliers use the same colour
for different sized rubber. For the Imperially challenged, 0.045" is
1.14mm, so the nearest sizes will be 1.1 or 1.2 mm diameter.

Looking back at the Junior Selection Contest
============================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

For once I will not be writing some fuzzy feel good story as apparently
from the responses that I got from my previous piece I sent to the SEN
were not appreciated. What I would like to discuss is the conditions of
the contests and what really is to windy and rainy and miserable to send
our 1000 dollar airplanes into the blustery sky. I have recently flown
at a contest in which the conditions could be called uh "RIDICULOUS".
What makes me laugh about this is that the organizer is the one that
actually doesn't fly in the competition therefore he does not suffer the
ramifications of his decision in whether to fly in hurricane weather. So
at 8:00 AM we send an airplane up into 15 mile an hour wind on a square
mile free flight field and might i ask for what purpose? TO WIN! AH of
course to "Win" what I normally end up winning is a bill for the next
model I have to buy to replace the destructed one. I know what your
thinking is this incoherent rambling going to cease anytime soon? The
answer is yes. My point to this is that our contests are normally flown
on Saturday and Sunday. If the weather does not permit flying on
Saturday than just double up the rounds on Sunday. If you think this
doesn't work just ask Mike Keller who successfully did this at the 2002
free flight champs in November. I would rather hustle to put both Minnie
and major events in the air in one round that hustle to find enough super
glue to hold my stab together. All the juniors flew in absolutely
horrible conditions and you know what we all ended up walking away with?
Broken models and ZERO'S on the score board. I ended up going home and
calling my good friend Vasi for a new airplane because the last one ended
up diving into the armrest of Lee Hines' chair. We all know that free
flight is supposed to be a "learning experience" so I did learn
something. I learned that one decision from a "superior" could mean the
end of an airplane you spent your life savings on. You may now get the
impression of me as a whiner when in fact all I want to do is prevent
more shattered models. I think that the CD shouldn't be able to
absolutely dictate who flies in what weather. After all we are the ones
actually putting up flights in the stuff. Maybe the decision should be
more democratic than it is right now. Its just something to think about
because breaking 3 models at every contest can get old very quickly.
Till the next contest

Fly Max Catch the model and maybe win
Squatter part Deux

[Editorial

Firstly Ben is to be commended for writing about his participation
in international level Free Flight.

Commenting on the Junior selection program with 20/20 hindsight.
The way the rules were formulated it was essential to
to do well at the contest held at Muncie at the time of the Nats.
This sounded like a good idea because it encouraged particpation at
the Nat and for them all to fly together. However we made the
Juniors fly at a site, that open team will not use, without
the choice of a reserve day [because of conflicts with the Nats],
and without a Jury that we would have at a serious event. In the
part of the contest that was the Nats events the AMA would not permit
the running of F1P so those Juniors had to fly as a F1J, it turns
out that this was not an issue. Note the team place is dependant
on both Muncie scores and America's Cup scores but the juniors
have many opportunities to get a good score for the America's cup
part. But only one chance at the Muncie score.

The team selection contests are always tough. There is much
adversity. It is more diffcult than the World Champs.
When it comes to a contest will all people going for the
team, all are on the same footing.

Finally to quote a FAI sportsman much wiser than me - "after the
team selection is over there are 9 happy flyers and 100 who want to
change the rules" ! Maybe a sign that the Junior program has reached
maturity is that this same adage applies here too.

I'm building the Dream Weaver for Nos. Gas, and I'd like to get a
competitive engine for it. Does anyone have an excellent OS Max lll they
are willing to part with? Is there another engine that would be a good

It just occurred to me: has anyone considered admitting engines like the

few run-away runs) and they don't seem any hotter than the legal OS's.????

Can I ammend my first post to include .15 or .19 max III?
