Dear Freeflighters,
I apologize for the letter that was sent to the Scat Electronic News. I
meant to save this letter as a draft but unfortunately I am not familiar
enough with my e-mail system to do this. That letter was written out of
complete frustration and I did not mean to send the letter. I am also
very sorry about the comments I made about the way the contest was run.
I did not mean any disrespect towards Mr. Markos. He was very generous
in letting us borrow one of his motorcycle during the contest and I am
very apologetic for the downright uncalled for comments i made. My
intention was to protect the integrity of the jr team selection and the
way I came across makes it sound like I did the complete opposite. I
hope that you all will forgive me. This letter i sent was one of the
biggest mistakes that i made in free flight and i regret even setting my
fingers to the keys to vent in the first place. Mr. Markos ran the
contest the way he thought was the best possible way to run it and I am
very grateful for the work he put in. If you have any replies that are
positive or negative to this letter or the one that I previously sent, I
am eager to receive them. I still do love this sport and I am already
hard in training to achieve my goal of becoming a real competitor in the
Americas cup but for now i just need to focus on thinking before i speak.
Thank you for your time
Sincerely

Announcing Tru Torque Rubber

A new model airplane rubber strip is on the market
Gummy band fliers now have a new choice in rubber for their motors. Tru
Torque Rubber is in production and is now available for purchase. This
rubber strip is specially formulated for the unique needs of sport
rubber fliers. It is extra tough with an incredible tensile strength and
very high cruise torque.
Tru Torque Rubber is designed for all classes when you don't need to
push to the absolute limit. Tru Torque Rubber offer energy return that
is equal with the best that Pirelli had to offer along with an
incredible toughness and all around great handling qualities at a very
economical cost. Now you can save your remaining supply of super
competition rubber for when you need the extra performance the most and
use economical Tru Torque Rubber when the extra performance is not
needed.
Tru Torque Rubber is available in 3 mm (aprox 1/8") and 6 mm (aprox
1/4") widths and is packaged in 500 gm (1.1 lbs) bags. Cost is $17.00
per 1.1 lbs bag with USA Shipping $6.00 for 1 bag, $9.00 for 2 bags.
Quantity special is 9 bags (9.9 lbs) for $150.00 including shipping to

Roger:
I see we have tan rubber (Tru Torque) coming out of China now. The claim
is better and cheaper. This may or may not be the case, but all the
rubber flyers should be aware, as I have said here many times, the total
world-wide consumption of model aircraft strip is so small (less than
20k lbs annually)the market will not support two producers. I'm certain
John Clapp will confirm these words. So you rubber flyers must decide
from where do you want to get your rubber---the USA or China?
George Schroedter
[George I suspect that it depends where you live and how well
it performs.
If there is a plentiful supply of good rubber it will
be consumed readily - if the supply and / or quality
is irregular a> people will not fly the rubber events
and will be much more conservative on their.

Junior Team Stuff
=================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
First, thanks to the editor for the fine comment about my son John (one of the
best in the world, according to him). I am very proud of his accomplishments an
d to put him in the same sentence with THE best Junior F1J flyer the world has
ever seen, Austin Gunder, is a compliment. Austin and Craig have helped us
immensely with our program (as well as the Alien and others) and without
this unselfishess on their part, we wouldn't have had the success we have had.
I guess I need to comment a bit on what our fellow team memeber has to say
about the selection process the kids went through this year. Selecting a team
has always been somewhat of a problem. How many times has the "best" open
flyer not been selected because he had an "off" day? This is just the way
things go. I have been in this here sport for a long time and have seen this
happen again and again.
The conditions that the kids flew in were breezy and sunny. No doubt about it.
Yes, a few kids put models in because of the conditions, but the majority
handled it. I know for a fact that every junior did not smash a model. Flying
in the midwest is different than the coast. Models react differently.
Conditions vary drastically. I went out to the left coast with models that
performed excellent here at home, but, because of the calmer conditions and
bigger thermals, I did poorly! In fact, I lost just about everything I took
because I wasn't prepared for the boomers.
I feel sorry for those that didn't make the team. It is a long process in which
sacrifices are made, both time and money. However, preparation for ALL
conditions must be part of the program. Be it rain, wind, snakes, spiders
(eech...), or, heaven forbid, calm and nice! We have at least one airplane in
the box that is the "no matter what conditions it will at least go up, glide,
and get us a respectable time" model. It is the sacrificial lamb. I would
not have a very expensive, super tricked out model for this. It is the
disposible model.
I guess we can use this as an example of what would have happened if the WC was
windy. You fly the conditions. John dropped his only time this year (at least
in the first five flights) by not flying the conditions. The day had low
ceilings and the model decided to go into the clouds. If we would have been
smart (like Jim Haught! Did I say that?), we would have shortened the engine
run and just punched it up. Strategy is part of the game and that is what
makes the stars the stars.
Would I change the selection for the next cycle? And if so, to what? The team s
election committee tried to take the subjectivity out of the process, making it
a true numbers game instead of who likes who. When that happens, the numbers d
on't lie. But, we can get into the situation where an off day really screws ya.
I liked the entire junior team getting together. It was fun to meet the other
parents and kids. Also, the kids got to finally compete against someone their o
wn age. They got to see what everyone was flying and gave them a much better id
ea of what they need to compete at the level they are flying against. Sudden de
ath flying is rough, just ask every open F1 whatever flyer. The pressure is on.
But hey, if ya don't like, fly old timer...Just kidding...
Well, I guess we should get back to the building board as there is a new F1P
model going together. It is an all home made carbon deal, with a flat
bottommed G
iesking 6.5% section. Planform is like what we flew this year, just a stronger
wing. Need to finally up the nitro and see if we can improve the engine program
. BTW, we ran only 35% our entire F1J life, so we will see what 50% or so does.
We have not made a decision on which way we will go, but hope to have one new
F1J model (possibly a 6 panel Odyessy or else another Vasily model) and two new
F1P models to pick from. Really hard to give up 3 more seconds of engine run.
Our first P model was a speck when it flew....

Proud of the Juniors at Muncie
==============================

With the emotions recently expressed about the challenging
conditions of the prenats part of the junior team selection,
negative feelings can build up. I would like to remind us of
some of the positives.
Superb efforts in rough conditions by many! Especially
those that finished in the top three at that event:
Brian Bauer, Michael Avalone, Tyler Secor in F1A
Taylor Gunder, Ryan Jones, Sarah Radziunas in F1B
John Lorbiecki, Austin Gunder, and Jon Schelp in F1J
Wonderful flying the next day at the National Championships!
Especially by:
Ben Coussens and Peter Barron who maxed out in F1A
Phillip Scheiman who nearly maxed out in F1B
Cody Secor, with John, Austin, Jon, who all maxed out in F1J
The largest collection of Junior FAI fliers gathered to
compete together that I have seen in 30 years of FAI
involvement!!!
Good sportsmanship!
A noteworthy example -- Ben Coussens not only congratulated
the other juniors who did well while at the Nats, he recently
emailed congratulations to Peter Barron when Peter flew well
at a subsequent Muncie event.
Some words about the conditions. It was not the wind alone that
made it challenging, it was the cones of extreme circulation
of turbulence in the launch area just downwind of tall trees.
Models towed on the left end of the flight line were forced
hard left while some of the models on the right end of the
flight line were forced to veer to the right. It seemed the
key, as exhibited especially by Brian and Michael, was very
careful choice of when to tow, as the turbulence was less in
early parts of the thermals. At the event, some of those who
had been at the junior world champs in Slovakia (Ben, Michael,
Dallas Parker) commented that the Muncie conditions very much
reminded them of the conditions there, downwind of buildings
and trees.
Organizers do have a choice to be able to place the launch
area further away from the tree, though that can in some
cases restrict the area for chasing models. Personally,
I would much rather enjoy retreiving models from beans,
than watching models in turbulance not make it down wind.
Opinions were expressed by several at the time that there
may be better locations on the site to launch. Nonetheless,
it is the contest director whose job it is to balance the
pros and cons when setting the launch location.
As to skills in flying towline gliders in such conditions
perhaps the three best I have seen are Bob Sifleet (who won
the Nats from that corner near the trees a couple of years ago,
though he has said he would have preferred to have flown near
the barns where the trees upwind are not as high) and Michael
Avallone for whom the report is that he did very well in
handling the turbulence at the last Junior World Champs, by
waiting for the right air. And Chuck Markos, who has learned
to set up models with a high amount of stab kick-up and very
tight tow circle to be able to circle tow well in such
conditions (and launch into small diameter thermals).
Others of us, including Dallas Parker and Peter Barron, have
tried lowering the back of the stab to try to kite the model
and, the hope was, to restrict the side to side movement.
However, at that event, the lack of kick-up made it hard for
Dallas and Peter to get the tension for good high launches.
It is appears that there is more for us to learn.
Muncie has proven itself a fine site with most wind directions
and wind speeds (other wind directions do not have the same
turbulence problem), as has been exhibited at various events
there this summer, including the Nats. Despite its limitations,
it is the best flying site we have that is accessible to the
large numbers of Junior participants we had, not a site at
extreme edges of the country, and not subject to the extremes
of summer heat that one has in Florida or in the California
desert. Large Junior participation requires a summer event,
because school obligations prevent a large Junior event in fall
and spring, and because due to winter weather there is not
opportunity for most of the juniors to be able to prepare well
for a winter break event. I think it is also a big plus to
link the junior team selection to the U.S. Junior National
Championship.
In summary, a hearty congratutions to the Juniors for the
excellence in flying that they are demonstrating and learning
in a range of conditions such as they may see in Jr World Champs.
--Andrew Barron

Currently all that is available is Ray Harlan's and the stripper made in
Poland. They both work equally well. Ray produces his commercially so it
is always available. The Polish stripper is done more on a hobby basis
and distribution and availability is spotty. You would be well served by
either.

SkyScraper Annual, October 18-19, 2003
======================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Dear Free Flight Enthusiasts,
You are invited to Barron Field, Wawayanda, New York, October 18-19,
2003 for the SkyScraper Annual for FAI, AMA, and Nostalgia free
flight events, also co-hosted by the SkyScalers for FAC events and
by SAM-7 for old-timer events. It is an America Cup competition for
FAI free-flight events, and National Cup for AMA. See below for
the schedule of events and, for FAI, see also the times for the
rounds, starting Saturday. Note that there is one FAI round that is
only one hour in length, at 7:15am Sunday for a calm air super max,
the rest of the rounds are one and one-half hour rounds overlapping
to facilitate retrieval.
Daylight hours should be similar to last year when we had morning
civil twilight at 6:46 am, sunrise at 7:14 am, sunset at 6:11 pm,
and the end of civil twilight at 6:39pm.
We have access to fields on both sides of the river/canal.
We time the Skyscraper Annual for that one weekend in the fall
when it is anticipated that we have the good fortune of neighboring
corn fields having been harvested, yet the weather still tends to
be nice.
Come out and enjoy the fun!
P.S.
Local fliers take note of the SkyScraper Monthly Meet this
Saturday (September 13) at Wawayanda. We may gather on the
far side of the canal to reduce effect of the corn. The
monthlies generally run from 9am to about 3:30pm. In addition
to the sanctioned events, you are welcome to fly any free flight
model. Per agreement with the clubs, a field use fee of $5.00
is suggested for each participant at a monthly. Together with
larger funds gathered at the Challenge and Annual these are
used to offset field expenses (toilet, insurance, permits,
bridges, and gifts to neighbors).
Thermals,
Andrew Barron

to be used to keepup/down the plus fours they wear.
I know the exact product that Aram requires and as you say he needs to
visit a fishing store, but in England of course. The product is called
Middy Hi-Viz Fluorescent Elastic 6-8. 1mm diameter on 5 meter spools. I
note too that the fish guide states on the label -
"Roach,Bream,Chub,Dace,Perch,Tench plus bonus fish to 5 pound." so it
looks at though the Carp are out of luck!
My spools are a bright Orange Flourescent colour and is very good for
the stab bands.
If you have any problems Aram let me know and I will get my son Lance
to send some over to you from England. He has been doing it for other
modellers so knows exactly what to get.
John.
[I believe that the UK FAI FF magnate - Woodhouse can supply them]

Hello Roger
First of all, congratulation for Scat-news.
I have developed a new generation of Free flight beacon including a Gps. It
is dedicated to F1A and F1C. I have made 10 prototypes and I first want one
full year of testing before to decide to produce it. Today five are under
testing and I still have five available. If some flyer are interested to
test it, they can contact me. I send you the full description of the beacon,
can you attach it in a future Scat-news.
Thanks

OS FP and the Nostalic Luddites

Jim Brooks writes has anyone thought about using an OS FP for nostalgia? The
answer is yes they have. But the folks that manage Nostalgia rules are a bit
muddled in the brain. They believe folks can make some FAI style power
plants out of them. Truth is that a competitor could purchase a reasonably
priced engine or replacement engine and parts would be made readily
available didn't occur to the tiny minds making the ridicules rules for an
event that is made to have fun. The rules that controlled these events in
the 1940's and 1950's didn't occupy one page in the rule book, but are
voluminous today.
They need to come to grips with the cost's to modify ANY engine are terribly
prohibiting and would not be wasted on making an engine for a Nostalgia
trophy. Rules have never leveled the playing field, but just narrow it so
that people find better and cheaper alternative hobbies and sports to
participate in. Go figure....... Roger C

Alternate name: on my last visit to the fishing shop I notice this
stuff is also known as "pole elastic".
Coarse fishermen use it somehow for catching carp, roach, perch,
pike, etc. That is, the fish are coarse, not necessarily the
fishermen. 1.1mm or 1.2mm diameter pole elastic is still the stuff
you need.
