F1E Flying at the Isaccson Contest this weekend!

F1E Demonstration Flying at Lost Hills February 10th,

After some last minute scheduling issues I will indeed be bringing some
flying F1E models to the Issacson contest this coming weekend. The plan of
the moment is to do some demonstration F1E flying from the high man-made
ridge to the north of the Lost Hills flying site and just off the main entry
road 1/4 mile or so. It's a berm made by the earth moving activities nearby
and has drop offs on two sides so one way or another we will be throwing
models off the cliffs. At this time the general idea is to do the F1E flying
after the end of the mini events on Sunday which should give us several
hours of flying. Please come by and toss one of the models from the hill,
this will be a hands on session and if the conditions are right they are
beautiful to watch and fun to crash!.... NOT! Norm says we can even have a
contest if someone else wants to fly.

One caveat to all this is that I will be flying F1H on Sunday and being that
I am the Rambo of FAI flying and once a decade prone to kicking some serious
FAI butt there is a remote possibility that I will be in the flyoffs and it
may delay the F1E flying a little bit. At home I'm locally I'm known as the

Spastic on Steroids so in the event that I do make the flyoffs it should be
quick as I generally end up in a tangled ball of tow-line.

In another effort to stoke the rumor mill and to put some ideas in the heads
of my fellow FAI comrades there are some very preliminary discussions of
possibly having an F1E world cup event during the week between the Issacson
and Max-Men Contests next year. In conjunction with that there could
possibly be a USA F1E team selection mechanism in place as well. Needless to
say this is all very preliminary and will require someone else besides me
who is interested in flying at the F1E World Champs in Romania in 2003. If
none of you diehard free-flighters step up to the challenge then I'm going
to Romania without you! Much needs to be worked out including finding a goo=
d
F1E flying site reasonably near Lost Hills and of course some interest from
the European F1E flyers of which there are many. If you think the Endless
October is a good idea how about having a Fabulous Flying February?, or
maybe a, Wild Winter Classic?, perhaps the, Magnetic Monster Mash?, could
even be the, Miracle Magnetic Marvels Contest?, so many possibilities my
head is spinning! Many of the European F1E flyers also fly the other FAI
free flight events so it could be a good fit and there is rumor that my F1E
mentor Dan Petcu may be able to attend next year. Three contests in one
week, Free Flight until you drop, that's my motto!

There will be an announcement at the Issacson contest as to the how, why,
and where of all this F1E stuff. If in doubt, ask Norm Furutani, and if he
doesn't know then forget about it. Hope to see many of you this coming week=
,
and as a variation on an old saying goes, forearmed is forewarned, Rambo is
coming........F1E in hand, baggy rapper pants and all!

I am looking for a Galbraith/Nelson clamp ring front mount, both parts,
fuselage clamp ring insert and the motor radial backplate. Doug tells me
ther are plenty of them out there somewhere!!

Thanks, David Halliday. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Hi Roger
Well it looks like I screwed up my email address at the end of my scat add.
The one at the begining is correct and the one at the end is spelled wrong .
Can you fix? Thank you

rubber thickness

reducing the rubber thickness by about 1/3 does not look like it might be
causing problems - if the quality really gets easier to achieve! I would not
be averse to trying some.

It is VERY important, however, that the strip cutting be done and controlled
to the highest possible degree. It just might be possible, that thinner
rubber (.030 instead of .042) is even more sensitive to "scratches" in the
cutting edges.

I firmly believe that the good results I got from the 1/16 strip has more to
do with that strip being cut with sharper (newer, cleaner ...?) tools, than
with the theoretically reduced edge tension. Winding to the same stress as
near as possible results in significantly less strands being broken after a
flight.

long motor F1B

Sorry, I do not know the data of Zilberg's plane.

I have, however, converted a Welles to even more extreme parameters, getting
2:45 motor run for dead air use.
12 strands of 1/8 tan II allowed around 900 turns, and an old prop of
650*850 (mm, D*P) was used, no VIT, short auto rudder (3-5sec only to
control the burst). Interestingly, it flew much better with an old B8356
wing, than with the B6407 I use on my newer planes.

I hope, you will still get Zilberg's data.

Honorary Luddite...

I still hope to qualify as a die-hard Luddite, even if I experimented with
an ultra-modern F1E-control system.
After all, the plane itself does not even have glasfibre reenforcements, not
to speak about carbon or Kevlar ...
Just Balsa and some bits of spruce.

>From an article in the UK magazine "Model Flyer" by Andy Crisp it
appears that Zilberg's model used a normal size prop and 18 strands of
rubber. Hence the 2.30 motor run.

Andy can probably provide more information.

Roger,
I will have a few dozen T-shirts and tennis-style shirts with the Chicago
Aeronuts logo for sale at the upcoming MaxMen contest at very reasonable
prices. Wanted to sell them at the last WCh, but had to leave before most of
the people showed up.
