Saw you at the max men but was too wraped up to say hi(bad excuse). I lost a
new model on saterday but recieved a call from the lost hills FD yesterday and
model was found in good shape!!!

[ A number of people lost airplanes at the Isaacson or MaxMen and
most have found them. This includes Rocket Ron, Pim Ruyter and Pavel
Bogach. I think that Bernard Aslett's F1B was last seen over the
Pecan factory going towards Doug Joyce's house ! and is still
out there.]

Roger-
Young Ben is a budding towline flying HW Longfellow.  Attached is his creation,
crafted on a long Saturday afternoon...

Circle Tow Magic by Ben Coussens

When I think of lost hills,
The first thing that comes to mind
Is my fair Share of spills,
But the pain I will go through for circle towing I will
continue.
When ever I am circle towing
I often find my face glowing.

Finding a thermal is a process of healing
For if you are towing as long as you should
Your skin is most likely peeling.
Flying as a junior
I often get experienced flyers' humor.
Maxing out is your goal,
So you're one step Closer
To winning the big golden bowl.

In the beginning of a contest it's all a bunch of fun
But, by the end of the contest flyers attitudes might be spun
At the finals rough and mean the flyers might seem
But they're just trying their best to make the free flight team.

But in the end it's all great
Except when you launch in a thermal and you're late
In this sport much money is spent
But never are the rules and regulations bent.
Often towline feels like spaghetti
So you better have the speed of Mario Andretti

But one thing you can be assured,
To downers lift I will never be lured.

At what height above the wing root chord does the drag act?

Drag for the airplane is made up of skin friction and lift-induced drag.
The fuselage contribution, being small in most cases, can be estimated
from skin friction and drag from exposed motor cylinders and timer
parts. I would guess the amount for this is small as is the
drag for the empennage.

For a mulit-paneled wing, there is skin friction and induced drag. Profile
drag is estimated as a multiplying factor applied to the skin friction
and is dependent on the thickness of the airfoil section. When
the span loading is determined, the induced drag can be estimated and
it would act at the cen troid of the loading. The skin friction acts
all along the wing panel as do es the induced drag. I would guess
that the total drag would act at the pa nel mean aerodynamic chord. Its
height above the X-Y plane through the root chord can be determined
from the location of the MAC.

For multi-panelled wings, the same process is used, but each panel
has to be determined independently. The most likely vertical
position would be where the wing MAC is located above the X-Y plane.
I gave Peter King a method fo r determining the MAC for a multi-panelled
wing which is in his Rubber Sim p rogram. Basically, it is the individual
panel MAC times its segment area times the height above the X-Y plane.
The sum of each segment divided by the wing area gives the height above
the X-Y plane. For our models, the vertical position of the CG is
always above the root chord. All aerodynamic data act about the
CG by convention.

In full size aircraft, wind tunnel data give the lift, drag, and
pitching mo ment of each part as it is added to the wind tunnel
model. Moments are taken about a certain position on the X-Z plane.
Then the aircraft company changes the moment center, rejiggering the
aerodynamics to fore and aft longitudinal positions.

If Jean W wants any further information, I will be in Lausanne by 21 March,

deo volenti.

Roger,
We now have a Web site that contains NZ Maps with a lot of detail
including such items as ATM's, Pubs, restaurants , etc , more pubs, so
any Omarama Odyssey aspirant contemplating a first trip out here would
do well to have a look at it.The address is http://www.mapzone.co.nz.

Suckers or Blowers ?

I hate to say it but they could suck or blow based on that definition. I
think the correct terminology would be that attract or repel depending on
polarity of the mating item.

i.e. like poles of magnets reply and unlike poles attract.

Sorry for the engineer coming out in me.

Roger,
The old English standard "Aeromodeller" may have at last given up the
ghost. As you well know, it served the FF community faithfully for over
65 years under many esteemed editors. In recent years it has been like a
geriatric on life-support and it seems that the publisher "Nexus" has
finally pulled the plug. The February 2001 issue may well be the last
and in their web site (www.modelflying.co.uk) the following has appeared:
"Press release: future of Aeromodeller
Following a decision to re-structure the consumer division of Nexus
Media, we are currently in discussion with a number of interested parties
regarding the future of Aeromodeller, Scale Models International, Clocks,
Regiment and Model Cars Plus.
All subscribers to these titles will be contacted shortly.
The decision to re-structure does NOT effect other Nexus Special
Interests titles which will continue to publish as scheduled.
As soon as more news is available it will be posted on this website.

One by one, the icons of our youth are fading into obscurity.
Regards,
Paul Lagan

[Paul, some of the English contingent at the MaxMen told me this -
and that the name was up for sale, suggesting the SEN buy it!
Now if this had been a couple of years back maybe we could have floated
and IPO to do it, but not with the current state of the "market".]
