Fly and Bike - Nats

Roger- for SEN:

Is anyone interested in flying with me in the Bonanza from Idaho (or
nearby) to Muncie for the Nats? Does anyone going to Muncie for the
Nats have a spare chase bike I could rent or borrow, at least
Wednesday and Thursday for F1J and 1/2 A? Bruce Augustus (208)

Temperature Measurement

Roger,

Would like to point out a mod to all those recording thermal detectors that
can improve performance. A thermocouple is a self generating sensor
consisting of 2 dis-similar metals that generate a small Voltage with a
temperature difference. Thus there is no self heating (wind sensitivity)
and also the fine wires have a faster response time. Both of these are
good.

I have a few temperature adapters that convert the small signal from the
thermocouple to 1 millivolt per degree F or C. These include a 4'
Chromel-Alumel thermocouple of 0.020 dia which is about 5X faster than a
Starline thermistor and can be filed or flattened or replaced with smaller
dia for even faster response. It uses a 9V battery and is about the size of
a mouse.

Besides recorders, these can be used in conjunction with a Digital Multi
Meter, analog meter & probably a laptop or Palm. While they should adapt
readily to Xenakis type recorders, they are incompatible with Starline
Thermal Sniffers which have a highly sophisticated circuit.

Priced at $30ppd with battery and connector, these are less than half of
what Omega or Fluke charges. E-mail any questions.

Thanks,
H

Selig Mini Timer Failure
========================

Roger,

Have found what I believe is a new failure mode for the latest version
of the Selig Mini timer for F1J. When the third disk was added to the
timer the engine shut-off disk diameter was increased to the point where
it is overlapped by the DT scroll. One of my timers would fail to start
when it was set for about 2 second runs. This only occurred during test
runs of the timer without the engine running and then only once in a
while. Never had a problem with the engine running but it certainly
could happen. Exact time setting would vary from timer to timer due to
speed variations. The problem was that the trailing edge of the cutout
in the engine shutoff disk was digging into the bottom of the DT scroll.
If the engine cutoff shaft was depressed, that's towards the timer
face, it would start running. Inspection revealed that there was a few
thousands of interference between the scroll and the engine disk.

Solution is to shim up the DT scroll as required to provide about 0.010
clearance or so. Problem you may then end up with is very little
engagement of the DT scroll hold down nut which is in itself a problem
in the first place. This is rectified by increasing the depth of the
counterbore in the DT scroll with a #2 counterbore and modifying the nut
to be sure it seated on the bottom of the DT scroll instead of the top.

Suggest all who use this timer check this out ASAP.

Hello there

just found your note in the web with regards to ROHACELL respectively
the
statement that the "vapour comming of the ROHACELL is quite toxic"
Kindly note that this is certainly not correct. The material is
calssified
to even burn non-toxic according to the toughest aircraft interior
specs,
such as FAR and Airbus standard.

If you have any questions / comments please feel free to contact us.

Hi Roger, for some reason I do not receive pictures etc. mentioned in the
news! In the last issue I miss the pictures from the Helios flight. I just
talked to Jorgen Korsgaard, he got the pictures! I admit that I am far from
being an expert on computer stuff, but I would appreciate if you can help
me. Kind regards, and thanks for all the work you are doing for us all! Tom

[Tom (and others)

Some times I have trouble sending attachments , some e-mail services
do not accept them or sometimes are are issues on my system.

You can always get them from the SCAT Web Site

www.aeromodel.com/scat

Follow the link current news and editorial.
Finally while on the subject or attachments , I do not have a way of
out poeople whi cannot recieve attachments so I have to send
them to everyone, even if they get trashed! in some systems.]

Leica Rangefinder

Think Brokenspar would be disappointed with the laser rangefinder as it only
has 2400' range which he will outclimb unless he cuts down the engine run.

Rangefinders?

Hardy,

Nice piece about the Leica rangefinder. Too many digits in the cost for me.
Really, you could find ranges far cheaper. Just get on Interstate 94 in your
town and go west. You will encounter ranges all the way from Minnesota to
Montana, probably far cheaper.
