Willard Smitz- Amazon Man and F1A Champ

With my tail between my legs and my ego bruised and humbled I have to
clarify some things about Willard Smitz wining Nordic at the recent
Denver 14 round America’s Cup contest. First let me say that while the
turnout for the contest was not large there were five of us flying
glider and the contest was a real challenge and no easy walk in the
park. The weather was absolutely perfect with light breezes and shifting
wind direction and very tricky air in the afternoons. For those of you
wussies who have never flown at Denver the site is very good but the
5000 ft elevation adds a new dimension to picking air, if you’re one of
those of free flight weenies who will only fly at Lost Hills then you
are missing out on the real challenge of free flight and the chance to
really test your mettle.

I can't report on all the glider flyers at the contest but I do know
that Pete McQuade and myself were flying state of the art carbon fiber
bunter models with all the bells and whistles that we techno-geeks like
so much. Willard on the other hand was flying a old SansEgal ? model,
all wood construction, tissue covering, straight tow, etc., etc., in
other words an F1A straight out the 60's. The fuselage was damn near as
big as a guitar neck and contest director Ken Phair lovingly referred to
the model as the flying schlong, an appropriate description. I have to
admit that the elliptical wings on Willards model were beautiful as was
his workmanship!

If there was ever a case of wisdom and experience winning out over the
piss and wind of youth then this was it. While Pete and I did all kinds
of nordic gymnastics with our circle tows including in my case tripping
and falling into the weeds twice, 78 year old Willard just stood out on
the field looking like a wooden Indian, only with his pant legs rolled
up exposing his secret weapon, the chicken leg thermal detectors, and
putting up flight after flight of maxes. On one flight I had a great
bunt and was way high off the line, Willard tows up and releases 50 feet
below me and after two minutes he was a mile high and I DT’d ten feet
off the ground. I promptly crawled into the nearest gopher hole so that
Willard wouldn’t see me as he drove by on his motorcycle going for a
long chase. This happened more than once!

To add insult to injury Willard even lost a model half way through the
contest and proceeded to pull our his back-up model which had to be
right out of the 50’s and of course he continued to put up maxes and
essentially grind the rest of us into the dirt. If there was ever a
deserved win this was one of those times. At one point in the contest I
tried to file a formal protest with the CD because there was no wind and
I couldn’t get my model up , needed some F1A viagra! I got a zero twice
because of this, how shockingly embarrassing! Willard on the other hand
just towed his glider up and let it off the line, made me madder than
hell.

So there you have it, confessions from a former F1A stud now reduced to
sitting in the dirt playing with my bunter. Not to be defeated however I
am nursing my numerous wounds and in due time and as said by some famous
guy like Alfred Neuman, I shall return!

Mac- the very humbled- Bigot

thermoforming properties of delrin?

I have a rather interesting project on the table. The design calls for
two spherical parts to "gimble". There is a high degree of surface
contact so slick surfaces are in order. The use of lubricants, dry and
wet are not an option. I was wondering if delrin could be warmed and
formed around a sphere to create a thin bearing surface? Thank you for
your time.

MMM FAI Annual 2000

This was a contest for one of our hobby/sport

?s long time masters. From the
first round Willard Smitz took control of F1A and never let go! Watching this
saga unfold is something I will not soon forget.

This is about trimming, this is about skill, this is about perseverance. Willard
flew two of his vintage Nordics against current day models flown by quality
competitors. He picked his air from the ground, towed into it and released. None
of this circle tow stuff. He countered the handicap of an aged body with his
skills of model trimming, air picking, and competition savvy. During the contest
he lost one model twice, and a backup model once. Events like this would derail
all but the best competitors. If the lost models affected Willard it did not
show. He just went on putting in maxes.

In the last round Willard needed only a 70 second flight to secure his victory.
Did he short fuse his model in response to loosing a model in the previous
round? NO! He went out and put in a monster flight for his eleventh max of the
contest.

F1B came down to a back and forth battle between Jerry McGlashan of Canada and
Dick Wood of Phoenix. Jerry got the win with maxes in 13 of the 14 rounds.
Excellent flying by both of these gentlemen in challenging conditions.

Early in the contest young Evan Davis of Albuquerque was running with the big
boys with an excellent flying model. Evan is preparing to go to the Junior World
Champs next month in the Czech Republic. He gave us all a scare when he lost his
model. After finding the model two hours later he decided it should spend the
rest of the contest in the model box. A sound decision considering how little
time remains before his trip to the World Champs.

All in all it was a very good show. Excellent weather, but with our typically
challenging thermal conditions. Great contestants from near and far. Stirring
performances by many. What more could you ask for? Fourteen straight maxes?
Maybe next year.

Ken Phair
