I am trying to buy a couple of rolls of Silver Micafilm. It is no longer
available through retailers and has not been manufactured for some time.
If anyone has some that they don't want and are willing to sell it to me
then please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Spies and moles

Roger. remember your childhood reading of the Wind in the Willows.
Mole was goodie, wearing a velvet smoking jacket unlike Raty and
Toad who was the ultimate class swapper.

I have realised with your world wide readership some of the local/ kiwi jokes
might need translation.
So a few.
Malkinsky: John Malkin, a former NZMAA pres, publisher of the
brilliant airfoil book with an orange cover.
Rootski:Unfortunatly the late Brian, a great flying mate of John,
an administrator both in modern and vintage.
And of course Devon Sutcliffe, now the NZMAA president carrying on a great
tradition of Wellington based admimistration for our national hobby/ sport in
all disciplines
Lincoln

[Linc, there are many advantages in subscribing to SEN as there
is lots of great information and opinions from Free Flight Sportsmen
world wide. In exchange for that you have to put up with me
editorializing and my sometimes regional and always questionable
sense of humor or is it humour.

When I talk to some of my friends from the Ukraine I hear that
in their youth they went to the Verbitsky Aeromodelling school.
As a member of the UpperHutt Aeromodellers in about 1960
I went to the Malkinsky
school. Unfortunately because I lived too far from the club
house I was not able to attend all the lessons, inspite of
my failure to graduate from the A-1 Aiglet class John Malkin
has remained my teacher ever since.

Then as George Schroedtler would say and a bunch of people did say
I got on the US F1B team by accident. Being such a novice I decided
that one teacher alone was not sufficent to propel me to a point
where I could perform with credit at the World Champs so I took
some Master-Class lessons from my young teacher, Igor Vivchar.

I think that my story is no different from many others and
illustrates that in addition everything else in Free Flight
we do make life long friends. ]

Am Cup and Finals

Roger

Here's the latest AmCup results to help the those making plans for the last
quarter of the season. I'm waiting verification of the F1G information for
the 5 Flag and the NWFF contest.

I give big thanks to Ian Kaynes for the EXCEL to text format program. I'm
sure Lee Hines and many others are appreciative.

I'd like to echo Ken Kowal's comment with regard to George Schroedter's
belief to use the AmCup. The AmCup mission is to further FAI FF by
encouraging flyers to travel to contest about the country. It was not
intended to determine the "best" flyers in the country. At times I have
even forgotten this. I had previously lobbied to use the AmCup to select the
team. In fact the Team Selection Committee came very close to adopting this
method several years ago. As Ken indicated, the AmCup vary greatly in
organization and participation.

The 2001 AmCup rules will tighten the contest requirements and will result in
improved FAI FF throughout out our country.

If the goal is to select the "best" team, we should hire an ex-soviet
manager to run a selection trials (note, not a contest) and have him select
the 9 guys! The trials would include previous contest performance, current
flying performance and examination of the models etc. I would venture this
would seriously reduce participation.

It is interesting that the Russians are now struggling to balance the
"democratic" method with their old autocratic manager method. Their current
method is a complex method of contest ranking by which the flyers earn their
ranking.

I have concluded our team selection Final's biggest positive is that it's
fair to all those that wish to compete.

Thermals, Jim Parker

Although I would LOVE to own those Flying Aces magazines, I must have to say
that, to a collector, they may be of more value than I could afford. Contact
the Flying Aces Club at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - I'm sure they can give yoou some
idea of their worth. Example: I have only the August 1937 and the September
1937 issues, and I have been offered $$$$ for them! Contact me after you talk
to the FAC-PLEASE!

Looking for SO Mentor in Tucson
===============================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I have been contacted by a Tucson young people's group mentoring the
Science Olympiad model building and flying event. They need a local
model builder to show them some techniques of building a simple indoor
endurance model. The rules call for a plastic prop and 10 gram weight
without rubber, so the mentor would not have to be a world-class indoor
builder. The group purchased my SO book last year and built models
using the information included. As you know, reading about building is
one thing, seeing it done is much more effective. E-mail me and I will
put you in contact with these Tucson kids. Thanks, Gary

F1E (magnet steered free flight glider) web site
================================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

There is a new web site for F1E, the international
class of magnet steered slope soaring free flight
gliders. This class is largely flown in Europe and
most F1E web sites are in German. This new web site
is in English and hopes to popularize the class in
North America. There is information on how to fly
F1E, where to get equipment and kits, and links to
other related web sites. The site also hopes to
identify potential and confirmed F1E flying sites in
North America.

The web site url is:

Problem with the IK / PK flight sim.
====================================

I have had a problem with one function in the simulation program and although
it might not be a problem with the earlier versions, I thought I had better
give this little warning out. While working on the 39th version I tried
to run 'plot res' in the climb simulation and the computer totally crashed on
several occasions. Everything else seemed to be working fine but, as I
rarely use this very useful function, I am not sure if it effects earlier
versions. I have sent the program to Ian Kaynes for advice but, until he
gets time to check it out, I would advise against using this function.
Although my PC crashed, it was OK once I had rebooted it. I had to run
scandisc and save some unknown files for safety on the recomendation of the
PC. I think they were just junk files and I seem to have lost nothing from
the hard disk. The problem was not terminal but it did give me a fright !!

I will update you when I get the problem sorted.

XL Macro
========

I notice there has been some discussion on the use of XL for contest result
administration, and wounder if there is an XL guru out there who can help me.

I administer a contest series, that uses the best two scores out of many to
determine results/placings (may change to the best 3 next year), and what I
need to reduce work load (and errors) is an XL macro that takes the best 2 scor
es
(7 rounds) and summs them.
I assume it is possible to write an XL macro to do this, but my attempts have
led to failure and I have had to revert to cutting out more ribs as therapy.

If anyone can help it would be most appreciated.

cheers

Hello;
Good idea George!! There was a very nice proposal a few years back that did
not get through the committee by one vote along the lines of the Americas
Cup, but fewer contests.
The idea was to pick 8 to 10 contests over a 2 year cycle that were spread
out over the country and were in most cases contests that about 90% of the
finals participants flew in anyway. Contests like the Max-Men, Livoto,
Nationals, ect. Then there were contests selected in areas like Texas,
Muncie, Florida, and others that would have built participation at those
events and made them worth the travel.
If you made all these contests have the stature of team select events at
good fields with good organization and nice banquet or get together they
would all grow in popularity and we would have Max-Men size events a number
of times a year. The flyers go where the competition is!!! This is the way
to increase attendance, produce more money for the program, have better
contests and more fun!! Not to mention, pick the best prepared flyers for
the team in that cycle.
I agree with George and can say that I am another that should have not been
on one team that I made in Florida. I went to the finals to help Jerry,
Bob, Ralph and a few others and stumbled on the team myself. Lets see, my
preparation, I flew a couple of contests in the spring, took 5 year old
models, had not flown in six months and made the team. Quite a way to pick

team member!!! Another one weekend wonder!!!
The team should be selected by a format that allows the best prepared, most
consistent flyers in that cycle to represent our country and not the
weekend
wonder!! The way the team is selected now does not promote participation,
except for the last minute charge to get ready for your weekend lottery
shot!!! Eliminate the luck factor and promote participation and the sport
will grow.
Try it one cycle and I believe you will see an increase in participation!
I will try to find a copy of the proposal that did not make it through
committee and get it on this page for discussion. More later, got to go
finish stuff for flyers for the upcoming weekend lotto!!!

Concur on Team Selection

Roger,
I want to say that I found Ken Kowal's ideas re the right and wrong ways
of Team Selection match my feelings as well. The current system has
evolved after many years and have produced quite excellent results at
recent World Champs in my estimation.
Points systems have been proposed and rejected due to the great size
of the US and the disparity of flying fields and competitions of varying

size and quality standards(to take Roger's point).
As for the need to have more equal flier (hence, timekeeper)
distribution
in the 3 classes at the Finals, perhaps it is time to revisit the
"Selected Contest" concept from a more enlightened & current viewpoint.
We may need to create a new formula for the max contestants/event
(similar to the old Semi-finals formula, but refactored) using the
scores
of the selected contests as the basis for the Finals participants.
There may be some good threads in the cloth above.
What do you think?
Now excuse me, I am busy NOT making towlines or testing rubber!
Ciao,
Lee
PS: Thank you Ian Kaynes for the format fix of the AM Cup scoring!
One last query: does it hurt when you "knock up and Excel macro"?

FREE Motorcycle Rack

Hi Roger and all the SEN readers, I have a motorcycle rack that fits
into a 2.0" Reese
trailer hitch coupler, It is made from 4.0" channel steel welded to 1/4"
wall 2.0" X 2.0"
square steel tubing, gussets, tie down points. Completely independent of
the vehicle
except for the coupler. Fits from XR-80 to XR-250, The FatCat even rode
on this for a few
years. The FatCat rode on top the channel as with the balloon tires
would not let it ride
down inside, But the FatCat didn't mind, just as long as it got to come
with me.....

I will bring the rack with me to the finals or whatever a person would
prefer. Again Free.

Thank you,

Daryl

National Cup

Roger

Attached in Excel 97are the current scores for the sixteen National Cup
Events and summaries of the total Points scores towards the four Cup
categories--AMA Power, Rubber and Glider, and Nostalgia. The data
represents the results of 41 NC contests. The information has also been
posted on the NFFS Web page by Joe Mekina. The competition for the four
Cups has been very strong and close at the top. Winning tactics appear to
be flying in all Events in a Cup category and traveling a little to away
contests. With 23 contests remaining to decide the outcomes, there is
plenty time to challenge the leaders.

Please post the Excel sheets on SEN. The results will be updated
approximately every two weeks.

Many thanks.
