The Wing Man is back - and bullet proof now.

The Wing Man is back
=====================

While in Kiev for the Antonov Cup I saw Victor Pissany
agin. Victor has not done any serious flying for 2 years but placed 4th in
F1A in the recent Ukrainan Champs. But what was more interesting
was his latest F1C contruction. Victor has two samples to show me.
They were just the stabs but I guess you could call it bullet proof
construction. One stab was covered to and bottom with a kevlar/mylar
laminate. On the top surface the mylar was metalized to protect from
the sun and on the underside it was clear. The mylar is needed to stop
the kevlar from absorbing water. Underneath the structure was
graphite. The stab weighed 19 and a fraction grams. The other stab
had not been covered but was eliptical in planform. It includes a curved
spar and d-box - looked just right for Gil Morris or one of the Hunters.
Uncovered it weighed just over 13 grams. Victor has matching wing sets.

[ This is from Jim Parker - Jim being a true BOM guy not only
builds his model but makes his own electronic timer based on the
Basic Stamp. Jim has some problems in connecting the Stamp
to a Toshiba Libretto small laptop. So for those
of you who also use the Stamp his is some tech info ]

Subject: Error<>EEPROM VERIFY FAILED

Help,

I've been sucessfully using a stamp I in my model aircraft to move a RC
servo. I recently purchased a Toshiba Libretto 50CT becuase a needed a
smaller PC to travel with. It came loaded with Windows 95. I have copied
the working files and the basic stamp program.

Using the window 95 dos prompt, Iv'e been able to bring up the stamp
program
and the various programs I use. However, when I try to down load a new
program into the stamp, the download scroll starts, the beeper associated
with the stamp program beeps and then I get the error Message" EEPROM VERIFY
FAILED".

Please provide any insight on this problem.

Thanks, JIM N89015@aol

[Parallax replied ...

Here are a couple of general solutions that we throw out first. Check your
power supply.

If you are using a PC:
(1) Run the stamp program in straight DOS and not in a Windows 95 Dos
Window. Some faster computer will run the stamp software correctly in
Windows on a 166MHz Pentium or faster in a full screen mode. We do have a
win 95/98/NT editor for the BS2 this is available at our web site if you
already have the editor make sure it is the latest version from our web
site.

(2) We have found that you can not run the stamp Dos programs in Windows NT
not even in dos from Windows NT. We have found that you can use a Dos boot
disk this will by pass NT's boot up and allow the Stamp editor to talk to
the stamp.

(3) The Stamps will not work on some newer laptops do to the low voltage
swing. If this is the case I can fax you an easy circuit that you can build
to cure this problem for a Basic Stamp 1. At the present time there is no
fix for laptops but we are working on one.

(4) We have found some new PC's allow you to set the state of a Parallel and
Com port. You will want to make sure that it is set to ON and not auto and
off.

(5) If using the Windows editor 1.091 or greater be sure you are putting the
directive in the your code. This if the following: Stamp2, '{$Stamp BS2},
Stamp 2sx, '{$Stamp BS2SX}. This is also explained in the read me that can
with the editor. Also make sure that the program you are trying to load has
the extension .bsx.

(6) If using the Windows editor 1.091 there is an issue with NT 4.0. The
API call that is suppose to release a synchronous call for serial port
activity simply doesn't work properly in NT (works just find in 95/98).
Parallax, Inc is working on this issue. A work-around for the meantime is
the following: when you go to close the Debug window, go ahead and click the
Close button, and then press the reset button (or somehow reset the stamp)
on the Stamp's carrier board to get it to send more data to the Debug
window... this will allow the process to wake up (on serial port activity)
and realize it's being closed.

Subject : Fwd: StampI, Libretto,Windows95 problem solved

Roger,

I talk to Andrew Barron who uses a Libretto and Matts Stamp II system
regarding my Toshiba Libretto's (with Windows95) problems of down loading to
the Basic Stamp I. He too had problems but Matt was able to walk him thru
the setting changes on the serial port the Stamp II uses. The parallel port
the Stamp I uses does not have the same ease of setting changes as the serial
port.

I consulted several PC "experts" at work . We tried all kinds of system
setting, generic printer port set-ups etc.etc. The download worked only
once ever 10-20 attmpts. Imagine using this just before the Flyoffs. I was
at the point on Fri to clean the hard drive of the Windows 95 and to load
Windows 3.1 (what I'm using on my old Laptop).

At work during lunch I was fiddling with it. I had brought in a fuseluge.
Two guys that work for me came in and wanted to know what the beeps were all
about. After a brief discription of a F1A, I discribed the Libretto, Window
95 problem. Then one asked, Are you using "Real" DOS. I discribed how I've
used the Windows prompt and had used the 'Shut down compter and open MS DOS'
. I thought this as "Real" DOS. He said it was not. The other guy said .
yeah there are 3 ways to get in DOS. His experience came a few years ago
when he was running DOS games on his first Windows PC.

As you probably know, that most PCs can be stopped during boot up ith the
"DEL" key. I don't do it-- scary stuff back there! On the Toshiba /
Windows95, that brief message during boot up does not appear but if the F8
key is pushed at the right time (I now just tap it repeatively during the
bootup), behold, a MS Windows 95 Startup Menu comes up that allows you to
select a "Command prompt only" or "safe mode command prompt only". I do not
understand the difference between the two but both work. They take you to a
DOS, C:\> prompt. At this point I use the same key strokes as before and
the down loads work perfectly.

Closing is more difficult The only way I've found is to use "CNTRL,ALT,DEL"
which reboots me back to Windows. "EXIT" returns me to "MS Startup".

Thought this might be interesting to you and usefull to others.

. JIM
