The weather for the big events started off marginal and got worse. It was bad enough at the beginning of round one to fly “twos” and in the middle of round two we halted flying to let the first squall line pour on us. We managed to open a twenty minute w
ndow about an hour+ later to let those who wanted to finish round two an opportunity to fly. Just after the round ended the rain hit again, so Reid gave us a two hour break for lunch. When we returned to the field the skies were clear, but the wind was n
w gusting to 28 mph. We completed three more rounds and called it a contest. Tough flying!

The Small event day started off with moderate westerly winds which rapidly grew and shifted to the north. The last three rounds were a “Bear”. But we did get them in!! The fact that there were only 3 “Max Outs” in the whole contest tells you how tough th
conditions were. It was really a shame that the weather didn't cooperate, because we probably had the best turnout ever for an Autumn Cup, thanks to the Americas Cup Competition and the tight groupings at the top of several categories. The AC is really
etting people out to fly in other parts of the country! Thanks to everyone who made the trip!!

FYI: My FO Rule suggestion
==========================

Roger, this is my wording of the e-mail Aram was paraphrasing (27 Oct SEN).

"On a separate rule idea, I have spoken with several other F1a-b-c
fliers regarding the
counterproductive and troublesome aspects of flyoffs which exceed the 7
minute max.
It has arbitrarily legislated against perfectly good aircraft without
long-running
timers as well as increased the time of retrieval and chances for lost
aircraft to the worst end for our sport in our opinion.
If the hour is chosen with historical logic, seldom will more than 1 or
2 fliers make
that much time in 'dead' air. If still tied and daylight permitted,
another 7 min f.o. would surely produce a just result.

Therefore I propose that flyoff rounds begin no earlier than 2.5 hrs
before sundown
with max times of 5, 6 and not to exceed 7 min for any subsequent rounds
of the same day."

I sent this to Aram on 20 Oct 99
On the related "max time" issue, you will notice I said nothing about
"starting Nordics
at a lesser value". My rules thought was for F1A,B & C classes to have
equal FO maxes.
You flatter me and probably Zink, Brun and Parker as well, since I
believe our
calm air capabilities to be less than 5 min. Therefore it seems
reasonable to
say that 5 minutes is a reasonable carrot to dangle in front of the
horses.
Ciao,
Lee Hines

Hey, Parkie, --- I won in TX as you may know by now!
Beat Steve by maxing last(5th) rd after he cyclonically dropped.
VERY WINDY and turbulent! Planes were getting thrashed
around like rag dolls! My new Buntbone got picked up, thrown
and smashed down, crushing last 6 inches of right tip t.e. and
knocking fin off, this in round three. I continued using my Li'l AL
dropping 11 sec in rd 4. Dick Wood, who I travelled with from
Phoenix, said the wind just whipped it spinning and dumped
it to the ground!

It was exciting competition, well run by Lynn & Reid Simpson and
Julie & Faust Parker, who had a good handle on the
weather front situations occuring during Sat and Sun.
Dick Wood won F1G by 1 sec and I won F1H (only 2 Rds flown tho).
Re Am Cup points for F1A: Steve reckoned I have 105 pts now.
Is that so?
Guess I'll copy Rogerso he can put on SEN, too.
See you at the USFFC, LEE
