1999 FF CHAMPS
By T. Thorkildsen
This year the FF Champs was held later in the year on Nov 6 & 7th to
see if we could get milder weather then some past years. Although
the weather was great on Friday it started off windy on Saturday so
that most of the flying didn't start until about 10:30am. Most of
us sit around and socialized for awhile, until Lynn Pulley threw up
a gas model to see how far they would go. It looked reasonable for
cat 3 so that is what we flew the first day.
It was windy enough that it made it really hard to pick air
but at least the drift was in a good direction for chasing the
models. With 14 entries in 1/2A Open it was the most popular
event even beating out P-30 for a change. Seven fliers maxed out
in 1/2A but only two made their 4th and 5th maxes and myself and
Dave Anderson both dropped on our 6th flight. Most of the flyers
were still using TD's, VA's, Stels and such with no cyclones
around. If you look at the times you will notice that Cody Secor
a junior could have placed third in open. He won junior high time
in Gas as a result but did it the next day with probably a .051
up front. That was really good flying and his dad, Randy Secor,
is to be commended for taking the time to help his kids do so
well. You should have seen his one boy Tyler fly HLG. He can
throw harder then most adults.
I also tried P-30 that day but my model was flying like a
lead duck. I just couldn't get above the wind on the surface.
Elmer Nelson who won P-30 was flying a Majestic and he said he
felt one of the reasons he did as well as he did was because his
model had a shorter run. He had a whole bunch of maxes with a
total of 1060 seconds. The power burst would punch him above the
layer that was holding a lot of the models near the surface.
John Kamla flying his Marie design won second place in P-30. He
lost the model 2 or 3 times but it kept getting returned so he
could fly it again. I believe this same design won the Nats this
year if I am not mistaken. John Kamla came down with a large
group of flyers from the Northwest, including Bob Stalick and
they had a great time and did well in a lot of events. Don
Bartick our friend from the San Diego Orbiteers finished up 3rd in
P-30.
We had a good turnout in F1A this year with 9 flyers and
Ernesto Busnelli just edged out Peter Allnutt with 1260 seconds
to 1220 seconds. I always like to see the glider guys flying
especially when they fly close enough since they are great to
pick air off of if they are flying up wind or close to where you
are flying. On Sunday I used them a lot in C gas. In F1C Guy
Menanno kept things going and they had 4 flyers in this event
with Daryl Perkins first with 1260 seconds followed by Fred
Grinder at 1201, and then Guy Mennano. The tail first guy Doug
Joyce was 4th. Larry Norvall won F1B but the turnout in this was
lighter than past years with 4 entries.
On Saturday when I got ready to fly ¼ A Nostalgia I
couldn't get the plug to light. I traced it down to the power
panel and when we took off the back of the panel the leads had
broken due to fatigue, so Mike Thompson pulled out one of those
neat little butane torches for soldering and fixed it on the
spot. It is nice to have friends like this in our club. It
really makes the hobby enjoyable when they will stop flying to
help fix your problem. Friends mean more in this hobby then any
trophies. Incidentally, Mike Thompson won ¼ A nostalgia with
DeShields 2nd. Sounds familiar doesn’t it, except that the order
was just reversed from our Nostalgia annual a few weeks prior.
Frank Pollard take 3rd with the other three flyers within 8
seconds of him.
Tom Carmen flying (surprise) another Texan was 1st in A
Nostalgia with Jack Moreland close behind with a Green head
powered Ramrod.
The contest was really well run this year and Steve Moffat,
his wife Margie and Lynn Pulley are to be commended for the fine
job that they did on running it. Every hour or so over the loud
speaker they announced a door prize to some lucky winner and they
gave away some really good stuff from the donations they had
received. They were tireless workers and had it very well
organized so that we could all have fun flying. Most of the
people that came to the champs this year came to fly and fly they
did.
Dave Anderson won D gas with 692 secs flying his own 7.5
powered design that really scoots, followed by Dick Zackman with
a Nelson powered 788 satellite.
Sunday we woke up to less wind so they elected to go Cat 2
that day. The air still wasn't that good though for HLG since
the times in Dawn HLG were down about 20 secs from what they
usually are. I guess it wasn't too bad though since Carl Redlin
had a little over 10 minutes in Dawn Mulvihill. Stan Buddenbohm
won Dawn P-30 with 220 seconds. I tried sunrise shoot out with
my A job but over run by 0.43 seconds on the allowable 10 secs on
a good solid flight but with an overrun it just meant a long 9
minute chase. Lynn Pulley won it with 367 seconds flying a
modified lipstick with a torp .40. This is his slow gas model
and it really goes. He got 2nd in slow gas with it Monday with
Tom Carmen scoring the win, flying another Texan no doubt. Hank
Sperzel flying a Nit Wit powered by an OS .15 was third in slow
gas. Hank was a busy camper and flew a lot of stuff over the 3
day contest.
On Sunday I started early in A gas and stopped at 4 maxes
to wait for better air. When I flew it later it didn't help much
since I dropped my 5th max and John Kamla shot right on by me with
7 maxes flying my Astrostar design with a K&B 3.25 up front. He
seems to enjoy flying his as much as I do mine. A Gas was the
second most popular event and it tied with catapult with 13
entries.
Mike Thompson won night gas, B gas and got a 3rd in HLG with
2 maxes, which is hard to do. Good flying Mike. Ted Vernon won
HLG with 3 + maxes, followed by Norm Smith who was 16 seconds
ahead of Mike. Martin Cowley won catapult but he always seems to
do well in this and the F1H glider stuff.
In B/C Nostalgia gas Norm Peterson was going flight for
flight with Archie Harlan. Norm ended on top with 1737 seconds
flying a hot Veco .35 powered Ramrod 750 with Archie at 1433
flying a nice model named SinSam or something. Heck if they
aren't Top Bananas or Rods it is hard to recognize them. These
guys kept clicking off maxes but at 11 seconds in Nostalgia for
3-minute maxes it took really bad air before Norm finally dropped
one. With almost 10 maxes his time held up for the Chuck
Broadhurst trophy for high time in gas. Good flying Norm. Bob
Stalick our NFFS president scored 3rd flying an upstart.
I dropped my 6th flight in C gas flying a 850 Astrostar with
a 7.5 and Tom Carmen was closing fast. He tried some Aerodyne on
his last flight but even at the 5 sec motor run it was just too
much power and the model looped in the pattern to drop the max.
Mike Thompson shot himself in the foot with an overrun on his 5th
flight but we have all done that before. This put him 3 secs
ahead of Charlie Tasto flying a fast 788 rear finned Satellite
for 4th.
Kate Joyce won womens high time with her F1-A glider time.
Bob DeShields won Sweeps again, just like our San Valeers
Nostalgia annual. Hey Bob, I want you to know that we all tried
but I sure couldn't catch you with my junk time in P-30 and HLG.
Monday the winds were down for a beautiful day but they
stayed with Cat 2 and Bill Lynch won F1J with one of his state of
the art models closely followed by Rick Keller and John Sparling
flying strap down models. Terry Ellington is improving his
flying skills every contest and captured 2nd in B gas on Monday.
I am sure that everyone had a great time like I did and we
all look forward to next year for another great one. Hats off to
our CD’s Steve Moffet, his wife Margie and Lynn Pulley along with
Jim Hurst who always helps with the table and timing. Thanks
also go to Margie for typing the results, attached to this
report. They all did a fine job of running it this year. When
you look over the results you well see that we got better
participation then in some previous years and we all hope this
trend continues.
