Comments on Span - Hermann Andresen
-----------------------------------

Thought that Jim Haught's span proposal was interesting. If both span
and area are restricted, then the events become even more of a one design
contest than already exists. Those who push the envelope will approach a
single surface airfoil and not lose all that much time. Those of us who
can't bunt an F1A will fall further behind.

Still think the cure is to extend the max rather than try to limit
performance. Flying 3, 7 minute rounds starting at dawn would do a lot
more weeding and leave the rest of the day for flyoffs, but then I repeat
myself.
Hermann Andresen

ps: Roger, Appreciated your comments re humor. There are so few FFers
that we get further when we all pull together.

[Editorial Comment]

I'm rather skeptical about span restrictions. Andruikov has a
high aspect ratio model, but he did not use it in Sazena
where the conditions were perfect and one would have thought
that kind of model would have done will. Bror Eimar's model
had a lot higher aspect ratio.

FAI Rule Change
---------------

Responding to Jim Haught's thought of limiting FAI performance by limiting
wingspan, I'd like to propose instead to reinstate the old cross section
rule of length squared/100 (pre WW II rule). This would end the pencil
bomber era, and add much needed character to designs. As an example, my
F1C is 59" long with a fuselage cross section of 3.75 sq in.(typical of
current designs). Using the cross section rule of L sq./100, required
cross section would be 34.8 sq.in. Models would get shorter, fatter or
both. Most likely this would end the look alikes and lower performance
too. Gil Morris

But your models would go from a Toothpick to a
tooth brush .. and an electric one at that !

More from Roumania
------------------

Roger,
Congratulations on the big CIA win. Sounds like it was a wonderful day.
I just got back last night, and thought that I should report in. Romania
was an interesting place, and educational too. For example, we learned
the real story about Montezuma. Seems his real name is Montezumacu, and
he was born and raised in Romania. He now resides in Mexico, under the
alias of Montezuma.
When I e-mailed the JWC results from Sibiu, I neglected to give team
results, which I will rectify here, along with Sibiu Cup results.

George - I see that you did OK against the real Ukranians,
you can't have suffered too much from the decadent Western
life style.... !

also it's always a wonderful day when you win, .. inspite of sun burn,
humdity, mosquitos, messed up flights, defective rental cars
and only 3 hours sleep.. ! More problems of a decadent society.
