An Historic Afternoon in Denver
===============================

FF Friends,

Yesterday at the MMM monthly contest I was among a lucky group of
onlookers who witnessed a significant event in FF history. NFFS
Hall-of-Famer Bill Gieskieng's giant "Skyzilla" OS .61-powered folder
successfully took to the skies for the first time. Bill spent the
morning breaking in the engine and by mid-afternoon--with the wind still
calm--the time was at hand for the maiden flight. After a lot of
concentration and double-checking Bill fired up the .61 and turned the
model loose. The ship climbed smartly to about 100 feet. After what
seemed like an eternity (actually only about 2 seconds) the engine quit
and we all held our breath. Then it happened. Suspended in midair, as if
by Divine Providence, the wings unfolded. In an instant the big model
had become genuinely massive. We could no longer contain our excitement.
Applause broke out across the row of cars as the quick DT popped and the
Giant settled back to earth.

Skyzilla is a Super-D folder. The unfolded span is about 12 feet.
Designing and building any ultra-large model is a great enough
achievement. But to feature folding wings on such a model is a
monumental achievement. In fact, I suspect Skyzilla is the most ambitous
free flight model ever attempted. Am I wrong?

O Billious, Sir-Skykieng!! Our Hero!!!

MMM President

from bill gieskieng

The big downside of receiving such loud and enthusiastic praise from
such a rising modeling illuminary as MMM's president, Don is the downer
that comes from realizing the impossibility of trying to live up to
the high expectations that naturally follow.

But, you know, it does serve to get me excited about fielding some other
ships that have been fuming on the back burner. Maybe even take some
pictures. I imagine a portion of Don's agenda in this manner is to stop
me from talking and writing and to get me flying. And that is good!
thank you Don! I'm going to do it. But first some more writing.

All that said, the reason for this letter is to make a needed correction
concerning Skyzilla's actual wing span. It is not the magnificent
figure of near 12 feet but only a miserable 10 feet...124 inches. I
have slipped up at times and said 12 feet. I confess I'm numerically
challenged at times...I have an FAI Folder (Stretched Eagle) that is 3
meters, and for some reason I keep thinking of it being 10 feet.
However, even though there is only 6 inches difference in the relative
spans Skyzilla seems to be sooo much more airplane that the FAI appears
alongside the huge bird much like a newly hatched chick nuzzling its
mother.

I can't agree to it being all that super ambitious. I consider it
belonging more in the realm of an ill-considered venture, such as
Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose. As for sheer hugeness I remember a photo in
a Flying Models Annual of some truly giant FF -- measuring over 20 feet
-- struggling off a NATS runway. No mention was included in the caption
concerning the flight or the landing. That strange omission does makes
one wonder!

However I think Zilla may come close to setting a mark for the lightest
Super D wing ever. It weighs in at only 410 grams ...that is 14.5 oz.in
God's approved numerical system.

Skyzilla lives!

... even if only at 10, not 12. ( and a really measly 6 in the climb)

Sr. Rodriguez, if you are reading this please know that I did receive
the .020 glow heads via Orestes Perdomo in Miami. There was no invoice
included. How much do I owe you? And would you like that in US Dollars
or in Spanish currency via International Bank Draft/Money Order? Please
advise, and I thank you for sending these.

This is my first time to respond to something read in
SEN, but I have to agree with one comment in the 11
April edition. If we (the collective we) buy a decent
field, it can't help but make the flying experience
better.

I remember years ago I had a dream. Bob Waterman was
going to put together a deal where we could have a set
of condos adjacent to a flying field. [It's always a
lot easier if you have someone else do the work.]
This would be my ideal. I've never had an urge to
live on a golf course or on a lake but to live "on" a
flying field? Who could ask for anything better! As
a "significant other", I would have the best of all
worlds. I would know where Roger was. He would be
near enough for me to reach him if I needed him and
out from under foot if I didn't. And by and large,
the wives of fliers are the best folks I've ever met
so spending time with them ain't half bad either.

So, if anybody ever has an idea to put together a
retirement village for modellers, count me in.

Just dreaming ...

Lindy

P.S. Hey, how about Palm Bay? The streets are
already laid out, and I hear the alligators are big
enough now for us to make purses and shoes out of!

Roger,
I was asked by Dan Heinrich to pass along to all fliers that the USFFC
will run the new Classic Towline Glider event on Labor Day Monday,
Sept 5, 2005 .
In addition, he has added 1/4A Nostalgia, also Monday.
The changes will be visible on the Lost Hills website by end of April, but
there
will not be a revised flyer mailing.
I suggest that all club newsletter editors include this info in
their next issue.

The April issue of Free Flight Quarterly,
the special edition on P30, has just appeared and is now being mailed.
There is a most interesting introduction of the topic by the creator of
the P30 category, John Oldekamp and
is followed by a wide coverage of P30 designs
from Australia, USA, France and NZ, as well a technical articles on P30
propellers (Paul Rossiter) and digital timers for F1B and P30 (Tapio
Linkosalo). For the regular readers of FFQ this issue continues the
series on Concerto for Stab and Computer by Jean Wantzenriether and on
Dynamic Stability by Chris Stoddart. Mike Nassise presents a 24"
Heinkel He100 fighter scale model for rubber power. The cover and
table of contents of this new issue can be seen at our website

href="http://www.freeflightquarterly.com">www.freeflightquarterly.com

The July issue will continue with the P30 subject with more designs
from several countries and technical articles on this topic.
We hope this will be of interest to many of you.

Hi Carl,
Sorry to be so long with this. Well here it is. For some reason the
stroke on the perimeter letters got a bit narrower than originally
drawn. Otherwise it is o.k. Do as you will with it Carl. Anything else I
can do? I will work on photos and book 2 of the great job you did on the
IMAC Album 1911 to 1940. Going to SCAT also, anyone want Book 1 for
25.00. It is spiral bound at Kinko's on quality paper.

Thanks Hardy for the interesting story and reply. Carl's mother! Man you
ore old, or were you 6? Never met her but if not for her hobby shop and
encouragement Carl would never have attained the heights that he did. My
mom knew nothing about the hobby but her recognition of my contest
winnings put the wind under my wings. Of course dad at my side helping
did it too. He was amazing with tools and taught me all. But of course
this is beside the point I was making about the Canadians and the
Prototype Zipper fopa.

Superfund Sites for Model Flying
================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The April 5 issue of the Washington Post had an article "Model Planes May
Soar at Former Superfund Sites". It's about AMA's agreement with the EPA to use
cleaned-up Superfund sites for flying model planes. The one example given is a
57 acre site at Altoona, PA where an RC group struck a deal with the EPA.
To learn more you can go to "Welcome to Superfund, US EPA" on the internet.
>From there click on "Superfund Site Classifications" and then on "NPL Sites in

the US". This takes you to a map of the US where you can select the State you
want to investigate. That leads to site descriptions, size, locations, history

and contacts.

F1Q Timer
==========
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Here is a copy of the note I sent to Jack Reid regarding his questions
about the availiblity of a F1Q timer. This may be of interest to others.
The picture attachment that was sent to Jack is not included here.

Hi Jack,

I saw your note on the SCAT message board inquiring about a timer for
the new F1Q electric model class. I might be able to assist you with
this issue. Others can help as well, I'm sure.

Some of us have been flying models in the AMA electric classes for some
time now, and the control and timing requirements for those classes are
similar to F1Q. I have attached a picture of the front end of the
electric model I flew at the most recent King Orange contest. The model
won the Electric A/B event with a 3-flight maxout. The timer p.c. board
on the side of the pylon performs all of the functions that you are
looking for including: arming the brushless motor, soft start the motor,
timing the motor run, braking at the end of the run, and timing of auto
surface functions for VIT, AR, and DT. The auto functions are
controlled by zit magnetic release latches which you can see on the side
of the pylon. Also, please note that there is a push button start
switch; which is released at launch to start all of the timing. I am
currently converting this model to F1Q rules. This will allow a change
from nicad to LiPo batteries which will result in more power and less
weight.

My timer is homemade and is based on a PIC microcontroller. However,
there are other ways to do the job. Charles Groth uses a 555-based timer
in his record-setting AMA Class B electric model. There is a write-up on
his ship in the 2004 Symposium. Also available are the the "Smoothie"
timer and the Black Magic timer; both of which, I think, can be made to
do what you are looking for. So, the technology is there. Go ahead and
build your F1Q. I will help you as best I can.

Regards,

Dick Ivers

A short reply to Mr. Simon
I do now know where you grew up or how old you are
but for me 74 is just around the corner and contrary
to your comments my youth was very full of all types
of demands on my time,I graduated from college and got
my masters from an Ivy league school and played sports
in both high school and college as well. I enjoyed
making my own fishing rods from split bamboo and tying
my own flies,I also stocked my own hunting rifle and
did a fair amount of hunting and fishing and kept my
old car running at the same time! But to the point I
want to make and that is I designed and built my
first Wakefield at age eleven, not because I was any
better or smarter than anyone else but I was
interested enough to MAKE THE TIME.My own son love to
go flying and fly my models. When I insisted that he
had to build his own that was the end of his
interest,Everyone alive in this high speed age, no
matter how old they are have a great deal of outside
pressures for their time and it is up to the
individual on how to divide it.Learning to fly a
world/class model..that is OK but how about the
thousands of potential young fliers that may be out
there who do not have the thousand dollars plus to buy
themselves a competitive model? Are we being fair to to
this faction?.... are not these the very kids that
should not be lost. The raw newcomers without parental
help and not just the small handful of kids that dad
is going to stick an expensive model in their hand. Are
our numbers not in a landslide to oblivion already?
What would happen if these current suppliers stopped
selling models? Would we have to stop driving if Ford
shut down,,obviously not, people know how to build
autos all over the world and I sincerely hope that
when I am riding the big thermal in the sky that there
will still be American kids with some sticks and glue
cobbling together some form of a model airplane. To
pass on this great hobby we have to find a way to make
it available to all those who may be interested and
not just the "carriage trade" and therein is the
problem and I do wish that I could offer a solution
but I can not.
