Author : martin-
I was recently asked by Chuck Dorsett if I knew anything about an F1J
engine whose only identifying mark is a large F on the left side
transfer passage. It's not an engine I recognize, so I've put what
Chuck and I know, including pictures, on my web site at:
http://www.gregorie.demon.co.uk/freeflight/f1j/mystery/mystery.html
If you recognize this engine and can add anything about who made it,
price, availability, contacts, operation, etc, etc please either e-
mail me at:
martin-At-gregorie.demon.co.uk
with the details or tell Mr SCAT's excellent electronic newsletter
what you know.

MMM t-shirts
============
Author : ddeloach-
Dear Free Flight friends,
I am about to place the order for some unique t-shirts commemorating the
Magnificent Mountain Men's 2003 flying season. The design features some
great old FF artwork and includes our contest schedule for the year. This
will be a great momento of the year's activities. The design is a two color
affair, blue and red ink (contact me at ddeloach-At-adelphia.net if you would
an e-mailed scan of the design).
The shirts will be white, short-sleeved, chest pocket on front, with screen
printing on the back. The price is $12 each plus $3 for shipping if you
aren't in Colorado.
Please state number of shirts, size, (XXL add $1; XXXL add $2) and shipping
address. The deadline for receipt of your order is Friday, June 13th. Shirts
will be ready for pickup at the June 20-21 monthly or the July 5-6 FAI
annual.
Please pass the word to flyers not on email who may be interested in a
shirt.
Please make checks payable to Don DeLoach. 100% of proceeds will be applied
to the MMM field lease fund.
Thanks and Thermals,
Don DeLoach

Ralph (Red) Costlow
===================
Author : AALmps-
We're looking for anyone who may have known/known about Ralph (Red) Costlow.
A friend, Bob Christ, has been asked to chase info by a guy who bought the
contents of a storage locker rented by Red. Inside the locker was a bunch of
modeling items plus a scrapbook of photos and other memorabilia of Red's
adventures with free flight models, including PAALoad, at the '47 Nationals in
Minnesota. Red died recently in Phoenix and no one that I've talked to here, so
far, seems to have any info. He was about 20 yrs old in '47.
The custodian of the scrapbook wishes to include material from the scrapbook
in a book that he is writing, saying that Red loved model airplanes to the
end. He quotes Mark Twain,
"We should endeavor to live our lives that when we come to pass, even the
undertaker is sad."
I like that!
Please send any responses to Bob C:

Small stabs for F1C.
====================
Author : ab.boutillier-
Last week-end I trimmed my new F1C. It has a 100 inches wing span,
a taiplane of 4.37 sq.dm (67.7 sq.in) with a moment arm between wing
T.E and stab L.E of 990mm (39 in.), more accurately: 1002mm (39.45 in.)
between mean average chords of wing and tail.
Cof G at 62.2% of mean average chord.
I first set the decalage for climb at 0deg. (tail bottom line parallel to
wing bottom line) as usual for my models with a 5sq.dm (77.5 sq.in.)
I was much surprised to be obliged to add a tremendous amount of
''down'' tailplane, the final trimming being OK with a neatly negative
decalage, probably several degrees, not yet measured.
Does any F1C builder/flyer have experimented the same thing?
Can it be the result of the combination of a rather small tailplane with
a not long enough moment arm? And large wingspan?
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Tangent Classic

Author : alkiview-
The third annual Tangent Classic FAI meet will be held August 22nd (F1
ABC) and August 23rd (F1 GHJ) at Parkers Field south of Albany Oregon.
Most flyers stay in Albany which is about 10 miles north of the field
and although Albany has many motels from which to choose, many of us
stay at the Relax Inn on the south end of the Albany airport. The Relax
Inn is reasonably clean and roomy with a nice pool and next door to
Pierre's favorite Chinese Restaurant with easy I 5 on and off. They
quoted me a $44 a night rate and I told them there may be more coming so
if you are coming please join us for a family style Chinese dinner with
views of the airport and Bruce Augustus's Bonanza as well as other
aircraft. You can pull up the Albany yellow pages for all the motels;
the Relax Inns phone is 541-926-0170.
The FAI contest is held in conjunction with the Northwest Free Flight
Champs on the 23rd and 24th with all the AMA and Nostalgia events so if
you are also looking for National Cup points bring all your airplanes.
Ron Mc B and I hope to see you there and remember there will be a BBQ at
the field on Saturday evening put on by the wonderful folks of the
Willamette Valley Moderers Club.

Rutan Spaceship DT
==================
Author : hermanna-
Roger,
This Burt Rutan spaceship has a hinged wing for reentry. Much less critical
to reentry attitude than traditional.
Another FF influence is the outrigger stab setup similar to those featured
in a 1960's Scatter.
With each pound worth $1000's it would appear to be a natural application
for Black Majik timer to actuate the DT from 60mi altitude.

You know me anyway so thats the introductions covered and i would be
interested in any comments that you may get in respect of your questions on
SCAT. If you want someone to watch your launches, then I have a digital
camera that is all singing and dancing and can video you and watch and
delete and try again. Either that or photo and record each launch - then
email the photos to you. This way you can analyse the launch pattern whilst
I photo the stance and angle etc.
I am about to go south next weekend and whilst away in Cornwall, am going to
have some fun in the evenings building some Swedish clg designs that
impressed me seriously at the Nats. I have plans and you are welcome to
them as any of the nigh on 300 that I currently have for hlg and clg.
Please dont hesitate to ask.
The nats were incredible for me - fair enough I did not do too well, but I
had the BEST time ever and have never laughed so much or enjoyed the company
to the extent I did and this more than made up for my poor efforts all
weekend. heck it was even worth the sun burn!
Best wishes as always to you.
In thermals and hlg heaven.

Dear colleagues!
I would like to ask your help.
Address of Eduardo Buchar, flyer F1A from Argentina is necessary for me.
I direct letters to the address specified by him, but the mail server
informs me, that the letter is not received by the addressee.
Probably, it occurs because of a mistake in the address.
My address: Aleksandr Pugachenko kosta49-At-mail.ru
I thank, Aleksandr Pugachenko.
wind rose plot
==============
Author : ddeloach-
Fellow FFers
I realize I am proabably not the first to discover this site, but I though
I'd pass it along
http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/climate/windrose.htm
It is a national climate web page for all 50 states. Of interest to us
modelers are the "wind rose" circular plots. They graph historical date
from1961-1990 that show 30 year average wind speed and the direction from
which it blows, for each month. The graphs also list the percentage of time
the winds are "calm" at a measuring station. It is interesting to see
whether or not the data support our anecdotal conclusions about the calmest
or windiest months in a particluar FF locale. Also it is easy to see which
sites are most consistent regarding prevailing wind direction
