SEN700
======
This is the 700th SCAT Electronic News ... starting from 1996 .. whew ..
I was hoping that some contributor would come up with something
truley momentus, not that what we've got in this issue is not of note.
I did get a tongue in cheek look into the future from the pen of Mike S,
that had previously been published in Vol Libre, but it needs a lot of work
to reformat it for SEN - hope to do it before issue 800 !
When we look at all the recent goings on with the rules and concerns
about participation. It seems that some of the squabbling certainly
does not go to increasing participation. Not going to a contest
because it is organized by a particular club or becaue of
who the CD is is short sighted and self defeating. SCAT member Don Zink
ran a program to try and help school children be nicer to each other,
there are times when I think we need to run that program for the
FAI FF community. We need to look at our own motives very carefully,
there are a number of people who make significant contributions to
FAI FreeFlight yet have a certain arrogance that they fail
to see what the active participants really want. In volenteer
activities like ours the reward you get has to be participating
and watching others benefit from the work that you do. Doing
things because you hope to get one of the FAI medals or diplomas or
be elected to the AMA Hall of Fame is not the right motive. One thing
about being an active participant is that it does give one
lessons in humility. Before anyone says that I'm thinking of someone
in particular, that is not the case, the only person I'm thinking
about is myself. Sometime back I heard through the grapevine that
someone had nominated or considered SEN for one of the NFFS, 10 best awards.
At that time I was busy and discouraged about some Aeromodelling things
so I thought - I'll keep on doing SEN til I get that and then
I'll stop SEN. As you may have noticed I did not
get that award and I have not stopped SEN. I realized that I was
not doing SEN to get that or a similar award, but rather
because of the service that it provided ... and I feel
priviledged because of the intraction that I have with all the
readers ..... Viruses, Puppies, 30 gram motors or whatever not with standing.

Roger
This is a reminder to the winners of Big Al's Shootout 2001, to bring the
perpetual trophies back to the contest this year. Go out now, uncover them,
clean them up, put them next to the model box, put a sign on them. DO NOT
FORGET!!!!.
The events that trophies are out are: F1a, F1b, F1c, F1g and F1h. F1j was
never settled last year.
Thx

For Chuck:
One flyer available... Bad knees, drinks too much beer and has an innate
ability to drive stakes into too-soft ground.
Rates paid in Miller High Life.

>From Tom Coussens:
Addie Naccarato had a heart attack yesterday and is at St. Joseph's Hospital in
Burbank. I have no more details than that, but Tony mentioned that she has be
en in declining health for a couple of months.

I couldn't wait any longer to comment on the new F1P event.
Unfortunately our well meaning friends on the technical committee missed
the mark. The F1P models will not acheive the goals that they intended.
Under the current rules, these models will be VIT (variable incidence
tail) with auto rudder. Such models have the same mechanical
characteristics as a bunting model and unfortunately are more difficult
to trim because of the required spiral climb. They will not be noticably
slower than the current F1Js and will be out of sight in 10 seconds. If
anything, the engine run should have been reduced from the current F1J,
7 seconds, which lets these models get rediculously high.
As an aside, I think a poll of current F1J fliers would show that the
majority are in favor of reducing the engine run to 5 seconds.
There seems to be misconception among those who have not flown them,
that bunting models are difficult to fly. This is not the case. Bunters
are very easy to trim, and once trimmed, are very consistant.
I can usually go to a full engine run on the 2nd or 3rd flight. The
models are generally in contest trim after 5 or 6 flights.
Unfortunately the answer to poor Junior participation is not in the
model. I my mind, the answer is in promoting the sport and mentoring the
young people who show an interest.

[Bob ...
Trying to looking at F1P from a Junior's eyes I'm not sure what is the
most intimidating, Austin Gunder's size and strength or his model!
I half expected to see a rule excluding Juniors over 6 feet, whoops,
1.8 metres in height ! Or maybe not letting Juniors fly Mikey's
models ? I remember seeing Taylor Gunder winding
an F1B just a year or two back and he had trouble fully stretching
the motor, but I guess he drinks the same water or whatever Austin
did because he too is shooting up in size. It will only be
short time before Taylor is launching his F1B harder than
Oleg K or Jerry F, so them what for the juniors in F1B ? ]
F1P Puppy?

Roger,
The new class of F1P models may be called 'Puppy' but their size belies the
appellation. Take a look in the Zaic 1964-65 book and you will find almost
all the F1C ships fit the span and area requirements of F1P. These are
definitely not small ships.
I have noticed that the F1C flyers maxing out in World Championship
competitions over the last five or six contests are trending upward toward or
beyond 50 percent. When half the field maxes out, it diminishes the
importance of the first seven rounds.
F1B is doing as well. Only F1A is not trending so closely. Why not consider
a contest where all the round times are increased 20 seconds, e.g., (180,
200, 220, etc.). Anyone not making the time is through for the day. I would
set the fee for contest related to the number of maxes made.
Bill Bogart
[Bill
I did notice you reading that Zaic Yearbook at the SCAT meeting
and whispering about building on of those F1C Classics to fly
in F1P. ... Looking at that period there are a lot of very nice
looking models, the die hard SCAT member can go no further than
the Saturn IV, I would have to do a Gloworm, someone
wanting to engraciate them selves with the FAI hierachy has to choose
a #18 or Ascender, for someone looking for the easy way
Bob Beecroft has Lucky Lindy plans in all possible sizes, judging
by all the correspondence that has been flowing lets finsh with a

Virus Update
============
I've talked to a number of people about there problems with the KLENZ
virus.
One thing that is happening now is that many e-mail providers are detecting
the presence of the virus - so that messages with it are bounced back.
That means that if you have the virus you will get a large
number of undelivered mail messages.
The solution to this program is to install a good anti-virus program ..
McAfee, Symantec/Norton etc and keep it up to date.
I can assure people that I do not have the virus on the machines I do
SEN with, those I use for my Yahoo e-mail account nor those at
my office. Also I have sent any attachments in the last few months
except to BlackMagic Electronic Timer people, so any e-mail
with attachments purporting to some from me did not.
