FFn

Just got my latest FFn. A long article by the Italians explaing why
the proposed the 'retro' rules changes, i.e. no automatic surfaces,
reduced rubber to 25 grams and fuel allotment for the endine run in
F1C and F1J. Also a interesting article on rubber. Some others
are stranger practises than I do !

Aeromdeller

Good picture of Anslermo Zeri in Belgium. Was that one of AA's
hubs on your model ? I thought you were a diehard BOM man :-)

Back in '97 Fred Pearce told be about a cmany in San Diego
that had some good prices on 7x50 Steiner binoculars with
compass. These were $300 instead of the regular $800.
They were ex-Isreali Army. I got some as did a number
of local flyers. However they were out of stock when
Al Brush went to get a pair, sol Al investiagated and
comeup with a list of sources for goos used optics.
Note that it is important to know if a particular model
of binoculars suits you before buying it. A number
of people have this particular model so you can often
try someone else's at the flying field.

So over to Al ..

Roger.....Sorry for the delay in getting the info you requested.
Andrey Burdov is here and I had to dredge through my multiple files and
finally found it today.

This is all my referrences for Steiner binocs. If you need any
specific questions or answers, let me know.

See you in Lost Hills.

Al

Subject: F1B Rules
==================

<<>>

Do we need a change in F1B, I think not.

First; We need to remember that we have had only 3 batches of superior
rubber in the past several years, with no guarantee that we will have
more in the foreseeable future, regardless of how hard John Clapp works
on the problem. Most modern models fly very poorly on pre 1997 rubber,
and a further reduction in rubber weight without a corresponding
improvement in rubber quality would be disastrous to our sport. Before
we reduce rubber weight or increase model
weight, try some of your old rubber and watch the results.

Second; Why is it such a problem to watch 4 to 10 planes in a fly-off
when it is not a problem to watch 10 to 20 planes go up together during
the earlier qualifying rounds? I don't see the problem. We should look
upon multi-model fly-offs as a true blessing. Rather than two or three
flyers being excited about their days flying, we now have 6 to 10
excited flyers, not to mention the increased excitement and interest
displayed by the non fly-off flyers.

Third; Why are we just looking a F1B performance, when F1A and F1C
performance far exceeds that of F1B. If performance is really the
overriding factor, then the other two classes need change far more than
F1B.

Fourth; For many years F1B rules remained unchanged, with
correspondingly very little model innovation. Then came the East
Europeans with their modern high performance models and changed our
modeling world. Most of the Wakefield flyers quickly adapted the new
technology, with its superior flying qualities, however, a few did not.
The real problem, from my point of view, is that a few of our modeling
friends, those who are proposinig the changes, do not want to compete
with today's F1B's technical innovations, and are proposing a return to
the past.

Let's leave F1B alone.
