As the '99 NFFS Symposium starts to take form, it is surprising that not a
single article directly concerning F1C has been proposed or submitted. And
only one paper relating to F1B! Does anyone have access to L. Fouseev and
details on his fold-wing F1C?

Draft/manuscript deadline February 20, 1999.

Concerning th 2/5/99 SEN comment about used binoculars (Steiner), look for a
comprehensive article about the best binocs for modeling and sources
(including with compass) by Fred Pearce in the upcoming '99 NFFS Symposium
Report.

Isaacson Winter Classic
=======================

This year was a Classic contest. Firstly the weather was good,
a little windy at times but not rain and the access to the field
was perfect. The Saturday there was a barbeque with Burgers and
Salad provided by the contest management followed by great
deserts that seemed to appear from no where.
This winter there has been little rain in California
and there is green grass at Lost Hills but it is much shorter than normal.
Both days there were some periods of dead calm indespersed with
windy spells when it gusted up to 12 mph. Not really a problem
at Lost Hills for the retriver or the timekeeper.

We include here the F1A, B and C results. The other events will be later.
As there were already a number visitors for the Max Men 14 Rounder
present the turn out in F1A and F1B was the same. In a typical
US contest we expect many more F1B flyers. F1C attendance was not
high and Gutai and Oliver tossed a coin to decide the victor.

In F1A and B there were no wimps. Victor Stamov beat Tom Coussens
in the 5 minute round. It was a little windy with the Victor going to
almost to the gympsum pit in 5 minutes. In the Coussens family parental
honor was satisfied as Tom did beat son Steven this time, that was
reversed with the Parkers where Dallas beat US team member and father Jim.
Tony van Edlik's winter program to increase his running strength proved to be
too effective as he folded the wing on his F1A in round one with out
enought time to re-fly.

In F1B it took 2 flyoff rounds for Bob Tymchek to come out on top, just beating
Russian visitor Andrey Burdov by a few seconds. They were both in the same
air and it was anyone's contest.

First place Novice Award [someone who has not placed in the top 3 in a major
FAI contest went to Dick Wood, who just started F1B less than a year ago.
This was combined with the junior award so second and third places
went to Dallas Parker and Stephen Coussens respectively. Note that Dick
is not junior ! I think he started F1B when he retired.

FAI tech
========

Also seen at the Winter Classic were a few samples of the latest batch
from FAI. Initial reports look good. Rubber looks like it has a lot
of stretch and very good energy return. FAI Model supplies will
have some at the 14 Rounder, with preference to those from outside
the US. FAI is also now stocking the Anenometer that I have been
using for some time. This appears to be an Asian copy of UK
device orginally made for testing airconditioning and
scientific purposes. It is very sensitive and can detect
very small changes in wind velocity. Contct John Clapp for
details ...
