The weather was, once again, perfect. Light winds, partly sunny,
temperature around 0C, and small, tricky thermals. Retrieving was a bit
tedious, as there was 20 cm of wet snow on the ice, and the top has
hardened during the night. It was not strong enough to walk on, so walking
was tiring, but very good to ski on :-)

In F1A there were 9 in fly-off, and Heikki Tahkapaa from Finland took the
victory with a beautiful flight of almost six minutes. There have been
three world cups flown on ice this year (Finland, Sweden, Norway), all won
by a finn! The next ones were Stamov, Kohckarev, Valo, Rumpp and Aringer.

In F1B 14 made it to the fly-off, and 5 of these maxed on the 7 minute
round. Anrdyukov and Skjolstad made even the 9 minutes, in about the same
nice piece of air. Alex climbed a bit higher, but Per Thomas had better
air (at least for the start), and was gliding a bit higher some two
minutes into the flight. There was no time for 11 minutes, and as Alex had
to leave early next morning, the guys desided to share the victory. Third
went to Walt Ghio, with another spectacular flight of 8 1/2 minutes, Jerry
Fitch was fourth, and Bror Eimar stalled into fifth position.

[Glad to see that Alex has not become too soft since living
in California , .. maybe it's flying in our Desert Challenge contest
at the beginning of January that keeps him in shape. Also great performance
by the other Californians, Walt and Jerry, even if they come from
the wrong part of the State...]

F1C had most drama. Only Juri Roots of Estonia, and John Cuthbert made it
to the fly-off. Cuthbert started early, but had his model in bunt setting,
making a half outside loop into the ground. Roots then made a nice flight,
while Cuthbert was busy preparing his spare. He did not manage to start
the model in time, but launced about 30 seconds after the round ended. The
flight was better than Roots', and there was some discussion of when the
round had ended, but eventually the Brit got a zero for that flight, and
Roots was declared the winner.

And then into another matter: I talked to the Finnish representative to
the CIAM yesterday, and he told that most of the rule changes were sent
back to the FF sub committee to discuss. Two changes were approved,
though. The rubber in F1B will drop to 30 grams, and the minimum weight
will raise to 220 by the start of year 2002. And to the general definition
of the FF models was added the following sentence:

"Closed loop control systems with active sensors and operating aerodynamic
flight controls are not allowed, except for steering in F1E."

A small correction, possibly:

Bernard Hunt wrote about the F1D rule changes, and said that the rules
will be enforced the 1st January, 2001. Our Finnish representative at CIAM
claimed one year later. I do not know which is correct.

Dolby Desert Challenge
=======================

In order to come to a decision on the unfinished contest due to weather, I
decided to give maxes to all unflown rounds. I will give the trophies to Bob
White to hand out at the next contest.

The contest was flown when the fog allowed. Started at 1 PM Saturday in
hopes of finishing Sunday morning. Junior events could be flown either or
both days. Sunday was a washout with fog not allowing sufficient visib-
ility for the contest. Maxes were added to unflown flights.

However, the fire Saturday evening was set by the firemaster, Peter Allnutt
and plenty of wood was brought. The fire was of such a size that the
nearest anyone could reasonably feel not being burnt was 6-8 feet from the
edge. Much merriment and sharing of food and drink was the order of the
evening and all surely slept well.

Please take note of the slight change in the name of the contest. Ed was
the one who started it.
