Roger,

In the 1998 NFFS Sympo Louis Roussel and I published a paper called "An
Imperical Study of the Relationship Between Color and Visibility of Common
Free Flight Covering Materials". The study looked at the relative
visibility of six colors of tissue and two opaque colors. The study was
conducted in the southern US where the environment is green with vegitation,
so the results dealing with visibility of colors seen below the apparent
horizon (against the ground) cannot be applied to sites like Lost Hills.

We would like to replicate the study at Lost Hills or Taft to make it more
comprehensive, however, neither of us are able to travel to those sites to
collect data. We are looking for an individual or club on the west coast to
collect data for us.

We would send the apparatus, color samples, blank questionaires and
instructions for administering the study, and analyse the data collected.
It is quite simple to administer and can be set -up upwind of the flight
line to avoid interference with models. One person, a spouse or someone
assisting the CD could do it. The volunteer would need to have a 20 foot
thermal pole that can be securely anchored to the ground, a clip board or
two and some space on a table. Thirty properly filled out questionaires are
needed to make the sample valid, however they need not all be taken on the
same day or at the same contest.

If you found our study informative and would like to help please contact
