F1P v F1J
From: Bob Stalick
F1P v F1J
As a long time observer of both pf these events, and an occasional flyer of both, and as an observer/reporter of the recent Jr. WChamps in Macedonia, I'd like to offer my opinion on this "controversy".
First off, it is my observation that youngsters get into flying power models by first flying Stardusters or other TD powered AMA gas models. The majority of these do not have auto surfaces of any kind, and they are generally quite forgiving on the launch. Since youngsters are still developing the necessary motor skills to allow them to be coordinated, the easier the model is to trim and fly, the better. F1J models are not forgiving to these erratic launches, and I've noted that even the more sophisticated F1P modes suffer a similar fate. At the Macedonia Jr WCh, a number of models suffered poor launches and did not recove well. The most consistent model was Alex Stalick's Astrostar. It didn't have the fastest climb, but it recovered from less gthan perfect launches very well, and it had the best glide on the field even though it was 50 grams overweight.
The Astrostar began life as an AMA gas model. The Secor Astrostar is an upgrade to that model design.
F1P is OK as is. The more complicated it gets, the more it becomes difficult to fly. F1J is proof of that.
F1C is not far behind.
Home built. Really!
With the exception of Blake, Gill, Walt, Jean and myself who builds their models anymore?
And to be truthful Walt and I build very little of the model.. So that leaves Gil, Blake and Jean Pallet who still bull there own..
And do the juniors want yo build? No! It's a buy and fly world.. Free flight would already went the way of the dinosaurs about 20 yrs ago if it weren't for the model factories..
Austin dud a poll at Jr. WC when this was purposed. The Jr.s voted 100% No!!! Then they had the next Jr. WC where they allowed both and F1p got a longer motor run at the contest. And even with longer motor run not one F1p....
Actually,I designed one for Austin to prove it was a bad idea. We took an old 4 panel F1j and he built a wing to short span to size using D box section from old wing. The wing was about 4% thick cause of wide chord. Put tiplets on it to control speed. Weighed something like 5.5oz. all up. As I told him it would, literally almost went out of site straight up in 10 sec.. The event designed for juniors was not wanted and the entrees show that they rejected it as No fun...

Not so keen on the electronic (altimeter) timing
From: John Carter
Hi just to say it's worrying to see that we are even thinking of using electronics altimeters to time official flights .I am not a Luddite but having been flying models in competition for 50 yrs or more I can not see the problem . Moving in this direction will just put more people off our great sport and past time my advise leave well alone

AmCup Update
From: Jim Parker
I've gotten some request for an update so here is a quick out put. There are some missing contests.
Ron McBurnett is sending be the NWFFC-Tangent results. Two or three Wayawanda and the Canadian Cup results are missing.
I searched SEN and my email for them but came up empty. It is very possible I missed them, nevertheless would the CD's please resend them please.
I'll do another update when I get them. Corrections to <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>
