Request for help for Yury Yablokov

From : Aleksandr Pugachenko <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

Dear Sirs
I ask you to do the dispatch of the next message.
Thank you in advance.
---------------------
Yury Yablokov is an outstanding Aeromodeller. He is retired at the moment and needs your help. He is an international master of sport, World Cup Champion of 1990, multiple champion and runner-up of international competitions, two-time champion of USSR in F-1-A class. He devoted his life to development of Aeromodelling in USSR and in Russian Federation, he brought up several generations of talented world-class sportsmen.

And now he needs your help. He has had a serious illness recently. Unfortunately his pension is not enough to pay for the rehabilitation treatment. The medications are too expansive and so Yury and his relatives are addressing the Aeromodelling society for help. At present moment the sum of 1000 EURO is needed.

We would be grateful for any help, including assistance in distribution of this information.

   Yury Yblokov-Bugakov

2009 AmCup Final Results

An excel year of FAI free flight competition is now complete. As in previous years, the last few contests of the year had the potential for the leader to be passed.   John Clapp  in F1G and and I in F1A gave a noble try, we needed a win to take the lead but between the excellent competitors and difficult weather we came up short.  Three flyers did come through and earned first place in  one of the last three contests. Mark Belfield in F1G and Austin Gunder in F1J won at Eloy AZ in Jan  and Brian VanNest won the Patterson in November to win F1H. Five of the events had a deferential between 1st and 2nd place of 2 or less points. A first in AmCup history is there was a 3 way tie for first place, in fact this happen in two events, F1g and F1H, and in both events the tiebreaker went to the 6th contest score to determine the winner.  We break the tie only for first and the other two share second place.

Congratulation to our 2009 AmCup Winners

Current FFQ Contents

This issue of Free Flight Quarterly presents a lot of material that is not usually covered in our pages, especially in relation with HLG gliders and with Compressed Air models. Thus we have  an article by Stan Buddenbohm and Lee Hines on that extraordinary session of Record Breaking at the Tustin Hangar in California last October and November. This is followed by Chris Stoddart's  article on the "Beat the Vartanian " competition, in which a small HLG model of no more than 12" span and no less than 10 gr. weight is used, emulating the old Leo Vartanian design of 1940. Dr. Koichi Takasaki of Japan presents a mathematical analysis of the trajectory of a  catapult launched glider, an analysis in impressive agreement with observed flight patterns.
Compressed air models are reviewed in articles by John Morrill and Ron Boots. The Morrill article will be continued in the April issue of FFQ with a more technical analysis of the compressed air motors.
The Bill Brown article initiated last October continues, now covering Bill's CO2 engine production,  which followed the demise of the Brown Jr. Motors  Co. in 1942 and  continued until fairly recent years.
Allard van Wallene  talks about "'F1A Mechatronics", his  recent development of the electronic aids to the state-of-the-art F1A glider: electronic timers, homing beacons, audible beacons, the tow-hook called  "Flex-hook" where mechanical switches are replaced by Hall-effect sensors, plus RC D/T and Strobe LED's for improved visualization of the model. Allard's work in these areas is quite impressive and illustrates the fantastic rate of advance of this FAI category. In this same area we have a short presentation of the small and very light Burley Timer, being now  produced in the USA.
The F1B competition at the recent World Championship in Croatia is chronicled and some aspects of the technical development of the F1B  models are discussed by Joseph de Montaigne.
Martin Simons talks about the Centre of Pressure and Aerodynamic Centre in airfoils, two concepts that are used frequently and not always in the correct way. Martin traces the history of these concepts and how they can be  applied to the aerodynamic analysis of our models.
There is also  an obituary on Dick Whitcomb by Al Bowers. Whitcomb's important contributions to modern aerodynamics are concisely reviewed by a distinguished NASA scientist. Also a review by Tim Goldstein on  the book by Ron Williams "Building and Flying Indoor Models" ...and more.
As usual, the cover and contents of this latest issue, as well as the preceding ones, can be seen in our website : www.freeflightquarterly.com

Writer in Wyoming

I'm not sure who asked if there wasn't much to do in Wyoming...however that is a completely ridiculous assumption! There is sitting on your couch, lying in your bed, curling up with the electric blanket, lying next to your dog for his warmth...lots and lots of fun activities! ha ha...seriously, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, Nordic(cross country skiing) snow mobiling(are you sensing a theme)
