2010 Bissonnette Memorial Contest Report

Friday afternoon the six F1E contestants had excellent flying conditions to start with. A 180 second max was set for the first round and carried thru out the contest. The North breeze increased each round and we decided to stop after five rounds. Dave Parsons won with three excellent flights and two so-so flights. Dave Saks was second ahead of Peter Brocks by 0.17 of a percentage point.

Saturday started out with a South drift that increased as the day went on. With the breeze came big thermals also. Several models went into the carrots in the second round, which made for a move to the West. The rest of the day very few models made the carrots. With the big thermals several models made it to highway 46 after the DT. It was decided to have the flyoffs on Sunday morning because of the breeze. Three flyers maxed out in F1A. Tyler Secor who has not flown for several years was the winner with a flight of 325 seconds. Jim Parker was second with 322 seconds, followed by Ken Bauer with 321 seconds. The F1B event also had three flyers max out. Bob Tymchek climbed less than Blake Jensen, but had a better glide for a one second win. Mike Davis, come in third place. The F1C event had four flyers max out. Ed Carroll had a not so good engine run and came in fourth. Don Chesson won with 429 second flight. Austin Gunder keep up his good flying for second place and the youngster Gil Morris was third. F1P and Nostalgia Wakefield events only had two entries each. Both F1P flyers were having model problems. Junior flyer Taron Malkhasyan won over Glenn Schneider. Berne Crowe maxed out with Bob VanNest dropping 28 seconds for second in Nostalgia Wakefield

The F1GHJQ was greeted with a very good day Sunday. Only issues, was the big thermals in the afternoon that were taking some of the models to highway 46. To cut down on long flyoffs and lost models the contestants were required to fly a flight to the ground early in the morning. This flight would only be used after two flyoff flights. F1G had a good turn out with five making the flyoff. Do to the big thermals and risk of loosing models the contest was called after one flyoff flight. Mark Belfield come in first with Jack Emery second and Tom Ioerger third. F1H only had two entries maxing out and both found very bad air for the flyoff. Brian VanNest was first, Lee Hines second and Mike Mckeever third. F1J had some of the highest climbing models on the field for the weekend. Again, the contest ended with only one flyoff flight due to long flights in big thermals. Tony Robertson won out over Terry Kerger and Austin Gunder was third. F1Q had three entries with Mike Pykelny the only flyer to max out. Bernie Crowe was second and Larry Bagalini coming in third. Vintage FAI had three entries with Glenn Schneider maxing the five rounds. Doug King was second and Wes Funk third.

A good weekend for flying, along with many flyers, makes for an excellent 2010 Big Al’s contest. A big “thank you”, for Ron McBurnett who had made up Bissonnette Memorial T-Shirts again this year and also Inky Davis who helped me out with recording flight times. Looking forward to next year and hope all of you can make it again.

67th Midwestern States Championships and Hoosier Cup FAI Results. May 28-30, 2010.

Upon arrival at the International Aeromodeling Center on Thursday, May 27 the weather was warm and sunny with light breezes. That soon changed while setting up to do some testing after not flying any outdoor since last fall. The first test flight with an F1G showed moderate drift, but while retrieving some raindrops began to fall. The sky did not look threatening, but just to be safe I placed all my stuff back into the car. The rains increased and lightning and thunder dominated the IAC as a storm seemed to develop from nothing right over our heads. It was about an hour before flying could continue. The unsettled state of the weather was evident from noting several other small thunderstorms that surrounded the area creating unusual shifts in wind direction. None the less, there remained ample daylight and time to do some test flying. The conditions finally became almost dead calm about 2 hours before sunset so those who arrived late in the afternoon had a good opportunity for testing.

Friday, May 28 was dead calm at sunrise, but by 7:30 am a very light east wind had started. The forecast was for light NW winds, so the flight line was established near the RC glider area at the NW part of the field to avoid two hazards: the cemetery trees and the RC “woody” contest being held at center stage. However, the breeze stayed from the east so we moved to the raised mound north of the control-line pavilion. Notable flying on Friday was 6 maxes by Ed Konefes to win the Small OT Rubber event with a Gollywock, better than the Mulvihill winning time!

Saturday May 29. The forecast was for light NE winds so we remained at the same launch line as Friday. The FAI contest flew 3-minute maxes for the first 5 rounds, but strong thermals were taking the models off site if they were in the air for more than 4 minutes. A delay was called to wait for the expected wind direction change that never happened. After about 2 hours, we decided to continue the FAI contest with 2-minute maxes for rounds 6 and 7. The only max-out for the FAI contest belonged to Paul Shailor. Bill Schlarb got 3 maxes to win HLG and Bob Hanford had 6 maxes each in 1/2-A and A-Nostalgia to win both.

On Sunday May 30, we enjoyed the best weather of the weekend. The forecast was for light easterly breezes becoming SW later in the day. The flight line was set up just south of the cemetery as the light easterly winds had persisted all weekend. However, as drift direction became more variable, the cemetery trees became a hazard so the line was moved to the west, halfway across the field. In F1A, the first round had an unlimited supermax to break ties. John Seymour DTd a bit early and the longest flight went to Paul Crowley. However, Crowley dropped one of the thermal rounds to place 5^th with the win going to Seymour who had the only clean score. Crowley’s drop was amazing as the climb indicated that the F1G was in a super thermal. Although there were only two Moffett entries, Joe Williams decided to go for a record, but fell short of a max on the 7-minute flight. In catapult glider, a new champion was found, Frances Masterman. She had three maxes to edge out Bill

Schlarb, who had dropped only 7 seconds. Her last max came on her 5^th flight with only 6 minutes remaining in the contest. The trophy mug was put to immediate celebratory use with chardonnay. Amazing flying was the order of the day Sunday as Bob Hanford finally put an end to Keith Fulmer’s 17-year possession of the Celia Goldberg trophy for first in ½-A. Said trophy has been maintained for 60 years and has been kept up to date with winner’s names inscribed. Even though the wind directions never did follow the weather forecast, it was a beautiful weekend to fly free flight. Besides that, the large temporary ponds of rainwater were absent for the first time in memory. A total of 390 official flights were recorded for the contest by 42 entries. Thanks to Chuck Phelan, Fran Masterman and John Ctvrtlik for help at the table.

There seemed to be a consensus that a 3-day contest over the Memorial Day weekend was a good choice so we will do it again next year. Mark your calendars.
