Interesting UAV

From:John Lorbiecki [This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.]

I know that many of the left coast modelers work in the aircraft industry, but I saw something that was interesting while looking at the Raven UAV from Aeroenviroment. The pictures showed the completed "model" and I thought I saw what looked like the stab was in a DT position. After looking at a video they had, it was indeed capable of Dting to a landing. Another case where free flight has influeneced industry. Of course, there always is Space Ship One, another plane that utilized our best friend, the DT...

[John

Actually there are a number that work at AeroVironment, starting with Biggles , probably on that kind of thing. Anyone who has flown R/C knows that the hardest part is the landing, particularily in a confined space. It appears that AV have used the "DT" approach with a number of their UAVs.  I understand with the Pointer, more of a electric powered sailplane, than the box like Raven they do not let the pilot give hard down elevator but rather require him D/T out of any big thermal and them put the stab back in the position for normal flight once the excess altitude has been lost.]
